 mower deck cleaning

Can anyone give me some advice on mower deck maintenance? I read in one of the posts that mixing diesel fuel with motor oil in a 75:25 ratio makes a good spray for the underside of the mower deck. This was done as a 'barrier' prior to mowing which allowed for an easier clean up. BRILLIANT ! (if it works...). Has any body done this? If so, does this mixture harm the painted surface? Are there other things that can be sprayed on instead of diesel fuel that might be a little more friendly to mother earth? Thanks for your ideas.

Rich, that was probably one of my messages that you saw because that's exactly what I do. I'll admit to being concerned about the environmental aspects when I learned that trick from a neighbor, but I use a siphon type spray gun hooked to my air hose so that it applies a very very thin coating. In fact, in two years I've used about a half gallon of the mixture. Northern Tools has such a spray gun and they call it an "Engine Cleaning Gun", Item #15545-C151 on page 123 of the 2000 Fall Master Catalog.

That makes since, but how does this mixture react with the paint? I seem to recall that you should wipe up any spilled diesel off of painted surfaces. Have you had any problems? Thanks....

Richard, I can't tell that the diesel and oil react at all with the paint. Naturally, I think anyone would say to wipe up diesel spills off your paint, but I think that's mostly to prevent dust from sticking to it and having a filthy mess. In fact, in one discussion about waxing tractors, I read one message by someone who said he just wipes his tractor down with a rag dampened with diesel. That'll sure make it shine, but I would think dust would stick to it pretty quickly. On the other hand, I'll bet that dust rinses off easily, too.

Rich--after trying car wax on a new mower deck, WD40, and some other coatings over the years that I don't remember, I tried spraying a can of John Deere Slip Plate on my present mower deck when it was new. There are likely other brands of similar graphite coatings that are designed as antistick coatings to release grass, snow, etc. The Slip Plate sprays on as an aerosol and looks like charcoal gray paint. It did work well for the first season of mowing, but since I don't mow commercially, I chose not to recoat for the second season and used a powerwasher to keep the mower deck clean. In time, friction from blowing grass, dirt, etc. causes the Slip Plate to wear away in places, but selective recoating would take care of that. Its too bad that there is not a reasonably-priced Teflon coating that is available. Mike S.
