I have a Ford 2000 gas burner. How do I adjust the carb so that I do not have to pull the choke out slightly so the engine runs smoothly?

If its like mine there's a big brass knob on the carburetor. Clockwise is lean, counterclockwise is rich. Too lean and it'll sputter randomly, too rich and it'll go "Bloop Bloop Bloop". ....
