 IH Cub Lo-Boy Clutch Problems

I have constant clutch problems with my 1959 IH Cub Lo-Boy. I have replaced the plate, bearing twice and currently have problems getting into gear when it is cold and it seems like the clutch is not totally disengaging. When I depress the clutch pedal there is chatter on the pedal as well. It is hard finding genuine IH/Case parts in my area (upstate NY Binghamton,NY) The tractor has never been the same since the original clutch was replaced. Giving up hope. Any advice would be helpful.TED

Ted, are you saying that you replaced your clutch plate and throw out bearing twice? If you did that, the next time you work on the clutch, look at the pressure plate. It may look good, but could have broken or weak springs that would give uneven pressure on the clutch plate and cause all kind of problems.
If that tractor is 40 years old, the pressure plate is probably not too efficient anyway.

The description does sound like something is warped. Myself, I'd never go to the work of replacing a clutch disk without replacing or re-building the pressure plate as well. It just seems like a false economy to me. Other possible problem sources are: The flywheel; flywheel faces are sometimes turned (at least on gas engines). The pilot bearing; A seriously worn or wrong bearing would allow play in the pilot shaft. General alignment and tightening problems; a clutch works properly only if the centre of the pilot and pilot shaft bearings line up, the flywheel, engine, bell-housing and transmission are perpendicular to the shaft and securely mounted. Granted, some of these things aren't very likely, and the pressure plate is the most likely candidate. However, these things might be suspected if the pressure plate was replaced. Oil from the engine crankshaft rear main-seal can get onto flywheels and pilot shafts and mess up clutch workings as well. However, a leaking rear main-seal should have been noticed either time the clutch was replaced. Chattering clutches should be fixed, because they don't do the transmission any good.

 IH Cub Lo-Boy Clutch Problems

We are a Case/IH dealer and the Cubs generally give few clutch problems due to the low hp vs the size of the clutch. I would suggest replacing the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bushing with new genuine Case /IH parts. My guess is you have broken springs in the pressure plate or a bad pilot bushing. You also need to look at the splines of the transmission input shaft these can get worn and not allow the disk to float properly. Also examine the shaft where it runs in the pilot bushing. If it is worn or galled it can also cause the problems you describe. If it is damaged the input shaft will need to be replaced. Also make sure there is free play in the clutch pedal after you put it all back together. We work on many Cubs and clutch problems in them are rare. If you need parts we can help and normally keep the parts you need in stock. Contact:
