 allis chalmers d-17 Buying advice

I have the opportunity to purchase a D-17 with overhauled gas engine. Needs tie rods and brake work. Would need a 3 point conversion kit. Where would I buy a 3pt conversion kit? Does anyone make a quick-attach FEL? Would I have to also add another engine driven hydraulic pump to get decent pressure? There are no remote hydraulics.

Anyone know how much the D-17 weighs?

cs

Sounds to me that by the time you are done you will have a bare tractor without calcium of around 5000lbs and by the time you have it functioning with ballast about 7000lbs plus. The add on three points last time looking were about 600 to 900 depending on tractor not counting the hydraulics which will probably cost at least another 500. A few steering parts and probably 5500 to 6000 dollars total investment with your labor you will have a tractor that a farmer will give you 2500 for in really good shape maybe 3500 when you are done. Take a test drive down a steep hill and see if it pops out of third gear before you go to far.

D-15's, D-17's, 19's and 21's have been around a long time. They were good tractors, but regardless of brand that seems like about 2,000.00 too much money for what you want to acomplish when complete, I've got a couple 4- 5,000.00 "M" Farmalls that started out as 1,200-1,500.00 tractors needing a LITTLE TLC. There both are now in good shape and used pretty much on a regular basis, but the "While you're doing it" syndrome kicks in and suddenly you've spent a ton of money on an old tractor. Best of luck. Frank.

I have to agree with Art and Frank, way too much money for what you get. I would look for something almost the way you want it and let someone else loose all the money they dumped in it.

A 50 horsepower tractor with a loader, sounds like $7k-$15k to me, and it will still be 20 years old atleast. I bale with a wd45 and nh273 w/ thrower. It takes time and innovation but we getter dun. Allis is work in progress but she weighs about 6000 lbs,has three point hitch and dual hyd. outlets. I would consider a loader but it has a narrow front and I already spent 19k on a new holland (that is awesome)! Anyway if you have the time and resourses, the sky is the limit. I substitute big dollars with elbow grease when possible. It is very easy for other people to spend your money for you.
