Snowblowing? Where in this country is there any decent amount of snow? This January has been rediculously warm, 10-20 degress above normal for weeks it seems. They said it would be "a winter of extremes." I'm just waiting for winter to return.

Opposite of most members on this board, I need FRONT ballast more than rear because I only have rear implements. That's the reason for filling the front tires. Even though they are small every little bit counts.

I also want to lower my CG for mowing. That's where the rears come into play. I understand your point regarding centrifugal force, but I never need to accelerate very quickly so the added inertia of the fluid shouldn't be a problem. I only see it being an issue if I get stuck because it will mean having to move an additional 200lbs or so.

I don't plan on selling mine for a long, LONG time, but new BX/B models are top sellers at dealerships. If their popularity is that high, you might surmise that used ones should sell fairly well too. Of course you'll take the biggest hit in first year or two, then the depreciation will level off a bit. You could check out Equipment Trader and Ebay to see what the going prices are for similar aged models now.

The balance of your rig can be adjusted with some sort of rear ballast (3PH is arguably the best type), a relatively simple fix for the far-forward configuration. As far as weight goes; just make sure the plow isn't heavier than your loader's rating. Be sure to take into account the moment arm created if the plow is mounted forward of the bucket. If those problems can be addressed, the only issue I see is manuverability (a long rig), and the tendancy for the plow to shove the front end of the tractor around.

I too made the same mistake of buying a non-subCUT blade for my BX. My solution was to replace the non-adjustable lifting rod on the left side of the 3PH with an adjustable on, as on the right side. Then both lifting rods are adjusted as short as possible without causing the lift arms or the top link to hit the frame at full lift. Mod cost: about $36.

For the work you described you should be looking at the big end of the B-series or the small end of the L-series. A 3130 is right on target IMO.

The DT trans is a regular gear-drive model operated by a clutch just like the old days with the following exception: The forward and reverse shuttle is synchronized so the tractor won't grind gears if it isn't brought to a complete stop. Helpful for loader operation.

IMO, the HST is THE WAY to go. No clutch, no gears, just squeeze down on the treadle and away you go, forward or backwards.

The GST is essentially a gear model with an "automated" hydraulic clutch. You simply slam the shifter into gear without having to depress the clutch. There's more to it than that, but you get the idea.

My suggestion: try them all, make an afternoon of it!

There is no tac on my BX, but I'm almost positive the min RPMs are WAY lower than 1500; I don't know about the 2210. The BX operator manual indicates the RPM should be lowered before engaging the PTO to avoid shock loading the drivetrain. You can certainly engage the PTO more gently by feathering a clutch, but I imagine the engineers designed the hyraulic PTO to engage without causing damage.

Another perspective on the HP difference between models... If you look at the HP to size/weight ratio of today's tractors vs. those of 50 years ago, newer tractors are overpowered. However, the role of the small tractor has changed significantly too. It all depends on what you'll be doing with the machine, I suppose.

1986 Ford Escort L. Very surprised no one else has mentioned this one yet. They seemed to be as common as cockroaches back then and about as ugly. It's anemic 4 banger was only good for about 60K-80K miles before it started burning more oil than gas.

A poor choice it may be, but a rear blade is a much more cost effective solution (at a few hundred bucks vs. thousands) than a hydraulic front blade or a blower. Of course, I'm speaking from a homeowner's perspective, not commercial. Although, I have seen rear blades used commercially for snow removal.

Around here they use 6000 series Deeres equipped with a standard highway truck plow on the FEL and a large rear blade on the 3PH to clear the rural roads. The rear blade really only comes into play when they are cleaning up an intersection. That way the operator can go back and forth pushing snow in either direction. Granted, we usually don't get a whole lot of snow in this area. A couple feet a year a few inches at a time typically.

My blade seems to work just fine on gravel. I use the convex side pushing in reverse. That way, the cutting edge rolls right over the gravel without digging in. The snow does tend to pick up some gravel so I stop short of the lawn. When I need to stack a bigger pile, I reverse the blade to the concave side and raise it up a couple inches. It's certainly not ideal, but a little technique goes a long way.

The 50 hr service was performed at the dealer. They supposedly did everything. I generally follow the recommendations in my owners manual to the tee and I know the value of a service manual. My question was more about personal experience and things not necessarily found in a manual.

There is a factory hydraulic block on the BX1500 that can be tapped for aux. hydraulics and the machine has plenty of power for a log splitter.

You are correct. The 54" deck on my BX1500 is a "floating" type and the 60" on the B7610 is ground engaging, but the problem is more a function of the deck width not as much the way the deck is mounted (although that certainly does make a difference). If the high and low spots in the ground are less then the span between the caster wheels or shorter than the deck is from front to back, the deck can still scalp or leave uncut grass. If your lawn is reasonably flat it's not an issue. I'm just lazy and haven't gone through the effort of leveling some of the really uneven spots in my lawn!

It's a small world. I'm just about 10 miles west of Warrenton. Usually its just rifle fire and cows out my way.

If you're familiar with Warrenton, it might be a good idea to drop in and have a look around. If not for comparison shopping, just to develop a good relationship with a mechanic.

In Warrenton: McMichael's (Kubota), Cecil's (used equipment), Smith & Sons (MF), Theros Equipment (NH), Trible Equipment (Deere). There's also another dealer behind the Sheetz with all sorts of older used equipment. There's a bunch more down in Culpeper (Kubota, Kioti, Cub Cadet, and others).

Great read. Thanks for posting that report.

The comments about the American media are particularly disheartening. I wish more people with similar military connections would do the same in order to combat the media's spin. They're not even being subtle about it anymore. And it seems more and more people (who can't think for themselves) are jumping on the bandwagon. It's frustrating to watch. I hope most of our troops don't think the majority of Americans share the opinions the media force feeds us on a daily basis. I'm glad to hear a first hand account that the Iraqis are starting to stand for themselves and that we aren't viewed as "invaders" by all of them. I'm also glad to hear moral is high among the troops. I'm sure I represent a lot of people when I say that I'm proud of what our guys are doing over there. Tell your friend to keep up the good work, stay safe, and God bless America.

Yes, your truck has enough power to *pull* a trailer of that weight. You mentioned your trailer has brakes, so if you are not going very far or very fast you'll probably be okay. But... manufacturers determine a vehicle's towing capacity based on a host of factors and usually go with the lowest common denominator. Besides safety issues caused by overloading you always run the risk of breaking something.

The bottom line is: it's your truck, you make the call.

A blower is definitly the way to go, but you are going to pick up gravel no matter what. To minimize it, set the skids up high and make sure the blower is not angled down at all. Leave an inch or on top of the gravel, don't worry about trying to clean all the way down. Lastly, don't point the spout at anything you wouldn't throw a rock at.

Ask very direct questions about the hours and the warrantee. Where did the hours come from? Has this unit ever been used as a demo? As a loaner? Has anyone in your shop taken it home? Has a customer ever taken it home? etc. Ask for a copy of the warrantee. Is it from Kubota? If the guy studders or stumbles, walk away. If he has immediate and complete explanations that don't point towards any funny business you might still consider it but the hours could be used as a bargaining chip.
