I've used a 72" Farmking/Buhler RFM the whole summer with no issue at all. It actually makes a better cut than my smaller 42" lawn tractor. I got it from my Deere dealer.

About the ballast box full of sand:
I did not use my tractor for a while in the fall (because of basement refinishing project). There was a funny smell coming from the tractor (parked in the garage). The cat is using the ballast box/sand as litter. Guess I'll have to cover it from now on.

For the JD790, I've measure the PSI at the loader connection, before and after adding one pack of shims. It added 400 PSI (from 2000 to 2400 at idle, from 2100 to 2500 at full throttle). I did not want to do this blindly. Based on the JD online parts, the pump used on the 790 is the same as the one used on the 4110. The default psi on the 4110 is ~2400. Therefore in theory this modification should not damage the pump. The hoses are rated at 3000 psi. I do not know about the SVC rating, the front axle support capability and the loader structural strenths but so far I had no issues and so does other people on this site which had the mod done longer than me. This is a modest increase of 20% i.e. if I was lifting max 800 lbs, I would now be lifting ~160 lbs more (i.e. 960 lbs).
This allows the loader to break more easily into a pile of stuff.
The long term effects are not known. Perhaps there will be metal fatigue somewhere along the line ? Perhaps nothing will ever happen ?

However, this does not mean that you can do this for all tractors. I've read somewhere that someone has added ~300psi more (I believe those were the numbers) from 2500 psi to 2800psi (a 12% increase only on another model of tractor) and the pump got damaged within a very short period of time.

I use an old lawn tractor (42") to cut ~2.5 acres of grass.

My 790 (AG tires) does a great job, specially that I need the high clearance when making trails in the wood. That said, there are times when hydro would make the job easier such as clearing the snow with the FEL (need to change direction/ground speed often), but I'm getting used to gear shifting and it's not so bad after a while.
Another advantage of hydro is that you can set the RPM high enough for keeping decent horsepower and just vary your ground speed with the pedals (without changing the RPM and therefore the H.P.). With gear, if you want to keep the same RMP for adequate H.P., then you will need to shift gear to change your ground speed. You can always reduce your ground speed by reducing the RPM (without shifting), but this will affect the H.P. if you need more of it.

So far I was able to carry a full load of heavy stuff such as wet clay or sod, etc. without boosting the PSI. However, lifting it up high (for dumping over an existing mound) was not always possible, specially if I had a heaping bucket of the heavy material.

My main problem is more to get that load into the bucket from an existing pile. The lifting capacity of the 790 is sometimes not enough to 'break' the pile.

I will try the additional shims (after I get a gauge first to make sure the extra PSI is not over 2500). Hopefully this will help breaking into the mound of clay/sod I have. I have ~600lbs on the 3pth which so far has kept the tractor very stable.

So there's is actually more than just the anti-gel difference between summer & winter. The concentration (in %) of the same chemicals is also different.<br>

I did see the manual about the 'wide tread' on page 66 but can't figure out how it's done.<br>
How can I tell if the tractor is in wide position for rear wheel and if not, how do you do it ?<br>
I know how to do it for the front wheel but not the rear.<br>
