Sounds to me like about 20 hp should do you fine...a little more if you want plenty of power and weight for a backhoe. If you could find a 4110 or 4115 new or slightly used, it will be a fine machine for you. The medium frame tractors have a few more comfort features but would be overkill for your purposes. Hydro with a FEL is a must in my book and either a 54" or 60" deck will be fine. I would suggest a 60" because it is easier to trim with since it sticks out past the tires farther. Enjoy!

I think the difference here is between teaching respect for things that can cause injury and true irresponsibility. If the kids are too young to be able to grasp a concept of respect, then it is irresponsibility. The age at which this happens will differ from child to child. As parents, it is possible to over protect, but we can never over educate. Any parent that places a young child in potential harms way by choice however, is acting irresponsible.

Actually, the gizmos are almost exactly the same. The new 3520 has a small manual lever to lock in the front end and a turbo charger taking it up to 37 hp. It also has a hood with connected side panels for much easier access to the lower engine compartment. Different lights as well (brighter??? don't know) and a different grill guard. I have a 4410 with a 300cx loader with HD bucket...a great machine.

How is that 300cx loader? My 4410 is going in to get one tomorrow...I opted for the HD 73" loader for an extra $268. I am looking forward to begin to use it immediately. Do you use additional rear weight (blade, weight box, wheel weights, or loaded tires) or have you been going with just the wieght of the tractor. My next purchase is the RB 1172 rear blade (505 pounds I believe)for grading and counter weight. I'll have to be careful until then I guess.

I have a JD 4410 ehydro and love it. Its turning radius is very tight. In the end, I'm sure the Deere will keep its resale better. I have never looked at NH due to lack of a dealer close but I do know the features of the Deere are great and the tractor is comfortable and easy to use. FEL definitely goes to JD. 2 year warranty could also be important. Whichever you choose, enjoy.

Whatever you choose, go hydro. Whether mowing, plowing, landscaping, grading,...whatever it is you're doing, a hydro will be good. No clutch, just push down to go as fast or slow as you want. I have had both...hydro is the biggest time saver you can buy...I would rather have a 54" deck with hydro than a 72" deck manual. (I mow 4 acres.) It is much more difficult to move things only an inch or two with manual. Drive the tractors, talk to the reps, talk to others who have bought locally. Most of all, enjoy your purchase but don't rush into anything...a couple extra weeks could save several years of wishing.

I have a 4410 Deere with a 72" mmm. I love it but I mow alot. If you prefer to wait an extra day to mow, get the 60" because a 72" pushes lots of grass out one side of the deck and can begin to clump a little more quickly. I mowed alot with a 60" prior to this 72"...on 4 acres, probably only about 10 min faster...although I drove the 60" faster than I do the 72. (You know how it goes with nicer equipment...you're a little easier on it.)

I prefer using a 12 volt spreader that mounts in a 2" receiver hitch. This allows on/off with the flip of a switch. The receiver hitch is also a place to put "carry-all" (20 or 24 x 60 platform with short sides)to use when the FEL is not on.

I just ordered a new 300cx loader with a HD bucket (in place of the standard bucket)for $3500 if I install it...add $100 if I would choose to have them install it. The initial price given for a 430 loader in this thread is too high...especially since the retail price is about $50 cheaper than the 300cx and it is an old model that they want to clear out.

I am a JD fan but feel that the 4115 is way over-priced for what you get. If you really want a 72" deck, step up to the medium chasis tractors...if a 60" is big enough for you, a 4110 does a great job. (Get a hydro tranny though for mowing and loader work.) If you want a "leftover" 4000 series model, you better hurry because there are not many left.

I priced a new 4410 HST last summer with a 72" mmm and turfs for just over $20,000. (I agree that your price is a little too high.) I ended up buying a used 2003 model with 87 hours at a dealer auction (same dealer) for $15,200. I have been very happy so far. I just ordered a 300cx loader with HD 73" bucket today for $3,500. (The HD bucket was $268 higher than the standard duty bucket.) IMO, if your going to spend that much, get the new series...resale will be better and maintanence work is easier with the hood that lifts the side panels...plus they look great!

Just remember you can usually use too big of a trailer for a small job, but you can NEVER us too small of a trailer for a big job. Error on the size of slightly too big when buying a trailer. You'll never be sorry. Also, when hauling a CUT, tandem is the only way to go. I personally prefer a car hauler.

It isn't too bad of price if everything is in excellant shape. I happened to pick up my 2003 4410 (87 hrs) at a dealer auction for $15,200...I test drove it a couple months earlier (mowing at my house) and they were asking $17,000 at that point. Remember that price is almost always somewhat negotiable.

Have any of you tried the electric spreaders that fit into a receiver hitch. It seems to me that this would be great because on/off is as easy as trowing a toggle switch. Plus it would be easy to hook-up and take off. For just a few acres, I don't need a 500 lb. spreader. We use a field spreader from the fertilzer company when the pastures get done...just need something for about 4 acres to use with my 4410...have a nice pull behind but can't reach the on/off lever from the seat.

My yard is definately greening up here in southern Indiana. Infact, I was rolling my hard tonight and decided to go ahead and put the mower deck down and mow it even. Some places I barely took anything off, other places I took off a good 2-3 inches. What a welcome smell...cut grass. It was cold today but we have been having a few days here and there in the upper 50's to mid 60's. Nice to get some seat time again.

My preference is the BF Goodrich all-terrain. They look great, excellant performance on wet/slippery raods, and can provide more traction than a road tire but last about twice as long as mud-terrain. (You can get 50,000+ miles out of them if you keep them properly inflated and have good alignment...also depends on load conditions.) They probably won't help you gas mileage but shouldn't hurt it much either...as long as you are keeping them close to factory specs. I have had two pairs, my brother has them, brother-in-law has had 4 pairs on on three trucks...we all think they are the best out there.
