OK WEST,we won't tell anybody,how big were the boulders you
were trying to chop up?I have chopped up 3-4" trees with
my 4310/6ft bush hog,even killed the engine off many times.
Changed the hyd oil at 50 hrs and cut the filter a part,
filter was still clean.I hope they find a reason for this
failure and not a design problem.I wonder if the clutch on
the 4210,4310&4410 are all the same? Sorry to hear about
your probems...keep us posted

Ron I would make the dealer test all the injectors,what I
have seen on big trucks is when it sits over night the bad
injector will drip the on piston and puddle,then when you go
to start the engine it smokes and knocks from the puddle of
fuel sitting on the piston.Also the misfire is because
the injector lost its prime from leaking all night.
The dealer will be able to detect this during a "leak down
test"on the test stand. No way should your diesel smoke&
mis at 80 degress.My 4310 starts and purrs like a kitten
at 25 degrees with no preheat. Good luck

I had a 026 for a while and decided to trade for a 036,
much more power and rpm,but the 026 was lighter.I love
the stihl saws but the parts are very expensive...bar&chain
for a 036 is $90 bucks.Are the Husky parts that expensive?
Chief, I have ran the 066 and 086,it takes a pretty big
pair to run those saws all day.I split 4 pickup loads of
red elm yesterday....needless to say I slept good last night.

Peters,what did you think of the Royal Purple oil? I tested
250 gallons of it in 10 of our Kenworth trucks.Look for
diesel oil to get even better,as of Oct 1 all class 8
truck engines will need to meet stiffer emissions(except
cat,they are just paying the fines for now)that means the
engines produced after 10/01/02 will have EGR valves on them,by puting exhaust back into the engine to be reburned
soots up the the oil that much quicker,so that requires
another oil to be formulated....

OUIMGUY,In my opinion the 12ft.mower is too much for the
4710,does the mower have a minumin horsepower rating?I bet
it requires at least 60hp.It might work ok if your just
mowing a golf course,but I would want a gear trans.When I
mow over 3 hrs with my 4310 w/72mmm,hst,the trans and floor
board gets very warm.I would hate to see what a 12ft mower
would do to my 4310?just my 2cents....good luck

CHUCK I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM,I SPRAYED THEM WITH ROUND UP
AND THEN BURNED THEM OFF WHEN THE POND ICED OVER,ROUND UP
DIDN'T KILL THE FISH.THE CAT TAILS NEVER CAME BACK EITHER.
THEY DO MAKE SOME STUFF FOR CAT TAILS CALLED RODEO BUT
ROUND UP IS CHEAPER AND DOES THE SAME THING.

DICK,I JUST SOLD A 82 2640 W/240 LOADER,5500 HRS,8 SPEED
TRANS,TIRE CHAINS,GOOD RUBBER,TRACTOR WAS NICE $11,000.
IF IT HAS A SHUTTLE TRANS THEY SEEM TO BE WORTH MORE.THEY
ARE A TUFF TRACTOR AND ALL AMERICAN BILT BUT I WOULDNT TRADE
MY 4310 FOR 2 2640'S THE 4310 IS MUCH HANDIER AND THE
HYDRALICS ARE MUCH BETTER.GOOD LUCK

Warren,I didn't ask them what year it was,but I did call
a dealer and he said there is no 4315 in the works yet.
The 4310 they had there had bars tires and sure looked small compared to my 4310 w/oversized R4's.All these
compacts were inside a 20x40 tent,I don't remember the
dealers name that was there with the compact JD's

I bought my 4310,ehydro,all ematch options,frops,mid pto,
aux rear port,430fel,72mmm and oversized R4's for 21,500
list price showed 29,000.also 5.9% money.Great tractor,the
more I use it the more I love it.

DOC,My dad and I owned a MF165 for over 20 years and the
only thing on that tractor that didnt Quit working was the ignition system,it had a external resister for the coil,I
remembered touching it one time and it was very hot.
I would put a external resister on it.One simple thing to
check is the polarity at the coil + ign - to the dis.
Did somebody install resister spark plugs and wires?
The way it sounds you already checked all this stuff?
I still have my MF manual if you need any spec's

THE BLOWBY.I HAD A JD2640 THAT HAD ALOT OF BLOWBY BUT RAN

WITH OUT THE BATTERY INSTALLED TO TAME THE HIGH VOLTAGE OF
"JUMPER 1000" WHEN YOU TURNED THE KEY ON IT SENT 18+ VOLTS
TO THE FUEL SHUT OFF SOLENOID AND FRIED IT.IF YOUR LUCKY
YOU JUST LET THE SMOKE OUT OF THE FUSE.I ASSUME THE 970
HAS A ELECTRIC SHUT OFF AND NOT A MANUAL SHUT OFF.I HOPE

Warren,does that 4400 have plenty of power to turn that
72 incher on the hills?My 4310 could use a little more hp
while mowing up hill,the load match feature helps out a
bunch.Was moving dirt the other day with the loader and
I guess I got some dirt clods on top the mower deck,then
while I was mowing one of the dirt clods got down into the
belt&pulleys and threw the belt off(very hard dirt clod huh).On the upside my selling JD dealer called me and said
they were on there way over to do a tilt wheel update
campaign.They are located 100 miles away.It took them
about a hour to do the update.The update is for all
4000ten series.

VERY GOOD POINTS FITCH,I SEEN A VERY GOOD LESSON AT THE AGE
OF 17 BUT IT COST THE LIFE OF MY DADS BEST FRIEND.THIS
GUY (55 YRS OLD) WAS MOWING WEEDS WITH A JD 2020,LOADER AND 5FT BUSH HOG,HE WENT TO TURN AROUND ON THE LOCAL
PAVED ROAD AND DROPED THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL OFF INTO THE
DITCH AND BECAUSE HE HAD THE LOADER 5FT UP IN AIR FOR
VISABLITY IT ROLLED DOWN THE DITCH WITHOUT WARNING.IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD EVER SEEN MY DAD CRY AS THE CORONER
PRONOUNCED HIM DEAD AS HE LAID IN THE DITCH.THE LESSON
HERE IS TO ALWAYS TEACH PEOPLE TO PUT THE LOADER AS LOW
AS POSSIBLY WHEN TRAVELING WITH IT LOADED OR EMPTY.
AS FITCH SAID,SINCE TRACTORS HAVE NO SUSPENSION THERE
WILL BE NO WARNING WHEN IT GO'S OVER.GOOD LESSON AT A
EXPENSIVE PRICE.....

Noticed last night my gauge glass fogged up behind the glass on my 4310 w/18hrs on it.Called local dealer(not the
dealer I bought it from)today and said he said he would
order a whole new instrament panel for it.He also said
they have never seen a 4000 ten series tractor as they
have been selling alot of 4000 series tractor lately.
JD has been paying the freight to ship to Iowa from anywhere in the US,I wonder if they will increase the
rebate this fall?

Dave, If you your looking to save a lot of money and need
power steering and live pto,I would look around for a
AC D17 series4 they had 45-50hp,hand clutch,P/S and most
of them had 3pth's,great hyd system,I abused one for years
mowing trees,clearing timber,bailing hay,etc.We never could
break that tractor.My nephew owns it now and still runs
great.Around here(Iowa) I can find them for $3000-4500.
If your looking for something smaller and newer,I would
shop around for a JD755 or 855......Good Luck
