Price looks decent considering it has a loader. According to my info, the tractor was good for about 90hp and was built from '64 to '71. (I view long production runs as a good sign; they were not in any huge rush to get it replaced.) I have no experience with the 1100 but have put a number of hours on a MF1155. Nothing fancy or overly high tech, just a basic tractor that did the job. It is sure less expensive to go this route than an equal vintage Deere 4020, which often bring $8000 or more. And, you would get a hi-lo powershift which the green machines usually do not have.
The 1100 came in both diesel and gas versions, and I am assuming that this is a diesel? If not, it might be pretty expensive to operate with $2 gas (unless you can get a road tax rebate at year's end.)

In response to the question about when sway would be desired: one application that comes to mind is with a row-crop cultivator. By having some free movement in the three point arms, you can make steering corrections without having the cultivator get off the row (the result of which is often refered to as "cultivator blight"). On the other hand, most landscaping type equipment (blade, mower, etc.) would work better with nearly all the play taken out.

I have noticed the same thing. On my computer, it seems to be caused by having to scroll horizontally to get to the "New Posts" and "Hot Subjects" menus.

My personal bias would be to stick with a brand that has a good stable dealership network and a long track record. This would include Massey, Kubota, Deere, New Holland, and CaseIH. (NH and CaseIH products are basically twins except for the syling.) All are good machines but of course will vary in the little details. Try out as many as you can before you buy. Like others have said on this site before, a good local dealership is often the deciding factor for many folks.<br>

One minor thought: you mentioned the Cub Cadet with a Cat engine. This engine is probably Caterpillar in name only. To the best of my knowledge, all Cat engines under about 200hp are Perkins-designed and are built in the Perkins plant in England. (Cat owns Perkins.) This is not to diminish this tractor at all, though. Perkins makes a very well respected line of engines that are used worldwide.

There are a few pros and cons to each. Although I would usually lean towards the plow for soil preparation, they do leave the ground somewhat uneven with a number of ridges and furrows. Several diskings and harrowings will minimize this, but the uneveness will still be noticable. (This brings up the point that the moldboard plow is never used by itself; it must be followed by an implement to break down the clumps like a disk or tiller run shallowly.) A person could probably use a box scraper to level the gound out but that would be a lot of work and would cause compaction in your new seedbed.

Tillers do not leave the ground uneven but they do have the tendency to leave the soil too loose and broken down. This causes it to dry out rapidly and also the crust over worse after a hard rain.

Another tillage option would be to break up the ground with a chisel, disk it well, then harrow it smooth for planting. A chisel plow could be assembled for low cost with a toolbar with any number of shanks on it. Here again the job will require multiple implements (but all reasonably priced) and passes over the field.

Based on your question, I am assuming that this model doesn't have position control. If not, does it have an adjustable linkage of some kind from the rockshaft to the control lever? I know that some tractors without position control are equipped with this type of linkage. If your tractor has this, you could adjust the linkage to return the contol lever to neutral when the desired hitch height is reached.

The 2004 Kansas income tax form had a new line this year titled "consumer's compensating use tax" and was a place to report taxes that were not paid on out of state purchases. This number got added to your total tax bill. If you did not know the amount, there was a simple chart that's based on adjusted gross income. For an average income, this amounted to $35. I am guessing that this is more for the state to collect taxes on internet purchases rather than border-hoppers, but the results are the same.

If you are building an implement from scratch, chances are it would not matter either way. Sub-CUTs do not have sway blocks that would be a problem so the arms could be adjusted to about any width up to the maximum spread. If the BX is like the Massey GC2300, the links can go out to normal Cat I width (26" plus a few more inches for hookup). The drawbar I have on my GC hitch is a normal 26" Cat I. One thing you might think of is making the frame so the pins can be reversed for different tractors. Turn them out for a normal Cat I tractor and turn them in for your BX.

Sounds like the same type of control the GC2300 has. On the Massey, there is a threaded rod from the 3-point lever that goes through a bracket on the rockshaft. One either side of the bracket are pairs of jam nuts. The front set controls how high the hitch raises and the back set controls the lower position. When the rockshaft moves enough for the bracket to contact the nuts, it pushes on the rod and automatically moves the lever to the neutral position.

I may be mistaken, but the way I read the Woods literature I get the impression that they have some kind of frame mounting. There is a comment on the web page "Also available with 3-point hitch option..." that leads me to this conclusion. I have never actually seen one, though, and have no idea what the standard mounting looks like.

As far as three-point hitches are concerned, all the tractors mentioned above have "limited" Cat. I even if it is not mentioned in their spec sheets. Most all the dimensions meet Cat. I standards except for lift height since the tractors are so short. Just about any Cat I implement will hook up but it may not lift too high off the ground. There is a wide range of sub-compact equipment available to remedy this problem.

For tractor-powered operation, you would actually have three choices of winch drive: PTO, electric, or hydraulic. A place like Surplus Center has versions of each that could be adapted for tractor use. For truck use, only the electric and maybe the hydraulic (which utilizes the truck's power steering pump) are really practical. PTO winches for truckes died out in the 70's due to cost, complexity, and the lack of PTO access on the light duty transmissions and transfer cases that where being used.

For the ultimate tractor winch for logging, check out the Farmi product line. Not exactly low budget, but they look like they would do a nice job.

Pretty much any good quality gun grease would do the job for both the u-joint crosses and slip tube. I also like to put a dab of grease on the PTO shaft splines before hooking up.

The time needed to cut this many acres would be a little discouraging to me. A 9-foot mower at 4mph gives a capacity of only about 4 acres per hour. (Approximate acres/hour = width (ft) times speed (mph) divided by 10.) So, one would have to plan on nearly ten hours per mowing.

Personally, I would find a neighbor to cut and bale the grass for hay. Assuming that the field yields 1 ton per acre per year and the grass can be sold for $50/ton (both are typical for decent grass hay) gives a gross income of $2150. The landowner would usually get 1/3 of the net income as rent payment.

Of course, another assumption that I am making in saying all this is that the grass is of a type in demand for hay. Timothy, brome, and others make good salable hay. Fescues and the like would probably not.

As the article above illustrates, many roll-overs happen due to improper hitching of loads. If a load is hitched only to the fixed drawbar (NOT a crossbar between the lower 3 point hitch links), the wheels will usually spin before the front end comes up. It is natural to want to hitch high to get more traction when pulling stumps, etc, but that can be fatal. Also illustrated is the potential danger of using tractors as log skidders. The end of the log is chained to the crossbar mentioned above and lifted off the ground and away we go. Should something snag the front edge of the log, though, and the tractor could flip in an instant.

I own and use vintage tractors and equipment that lack many of the safety features that new machines have. My 50-year old John Deeres will never be as stable as low-slung utility tractors, so I must take more precautions of where and how fast I drive them.

Laws forcing me to install roll bars will not make the tractors physically less likely to roll over. It may, however, make users of old equipment more careless. And who will do the engineering and test work to verify that the axles and other ROPS mounting points on a 50-year old tractor are up to the task? What company would shoulder the liability of producing ROPS structures for every model of old tractor out there? Who would be liable if the axle on my 1948 JD M snaps off in a rollover because it wasn't designed to support a ROPS? Like was said above, sometimes the government gets involved where they should probably not go.

Be careful, be smart, and think through potential consequences of what you are doing before actually doing it. We owe it to our children to do nothing less.

I believe the AGCO ST series is basically the same as the Massey Ferguson compact line. The Challenger line sold through Caterpillar dealerships is another variation. These tractors are built by Iseki in Japan.

I have no personal experience, but I would imagine that the key to making reel mowers work well is to not let the grass get too tall. Since the grass is sissored off instead of chopped off, they leave a very clean cut that I have read is healthier for the grass. (Again, no experience to back this up; just what I have read.) As you indicated, the required horsepower-per-foot is far less than with a rotary, probably because the grass is not mulched up after being cut.

I remember that the school I went to years ago had a five or seven (can't remember) gang reel mower that was used on the football field and the recess lawn. They had an old Farmall M to pull it with.

There seems to be a bit of confusion as to where the 3-point hitch came from. Harry Ferguson (an Irishman) designed the hitch in the early 30's and David Brown manufactured over 1000 Ferguson-designed tractors (not at all related to the well-known N-series) with the new hitch. (Earlier he had played with his hitch on a Fordson but this was not successful.) This partnership broke apart and Ferguson needed to find another tractor manufacturer to work with. This is where Henry Ford comes in and the "handshake" agreement resulted in the joint-effort Ford 9N in 1939. This was replaced by the 2N in 1942. These tractors were designed and built by Ford (using Ferguson's hitch as standard equipment) and Ferguson handled signing up implement manufacturers to built compatible tools. In 1946 the partnership ended and Ford produced the 8N and Ferguson built the TO20. The two were very similar and resulted in lawsuits by Ferguson since Ford continued to use his hitch design. Lacking a good marketing base in the US, Ferguson had trouble competing with Ford and was outsold by a wide margin. Massey-Harris bought Ferguson in 1953 and combined the names to become the Massey Ferguson we know today.
By the way, this hitch was produced before any ASAE classifications but was used as the basis for the standards when they were written. The 9N hitch became ASAE Category 1.
The hitch was quite advanced in that it utilized a draft control system. A major drawback, though, was the transmission-driven hydraulic pump. In order to operate the hydraulics, the clutch had to be engaged. Most of the 8N's you see today with loaders have aftermarket engine-driven pumps to provide live hydraulic power.

For aftermarket upgrades, hoses are generally prefered to steel lines since they allow greater flexibility. Steel lines require that everything be just right so that fittings are not side loaded. Since they can be engineered into the machine, OEM's will often use steel lines since they result in a cleaner looking product. For a given ID, they have a smaller OD (due to a thinner wall) so they take up less space. And, they can be formed into smaller radius bends than hose. Surprisingly, steel lines can also be quite a cost savings for a manufacturer over hose, especially for long runs. However, for the do-it-youselfer without the benefit of CAD design software (and an engineering layout of the machine) hoses are probably more practical to work with.
