$5000 sounds like a very fair price for a nice 420U. Over the past number of years the value of the John Deere M/40/320/420/330/430 line of tractors has increased quite a bit. (The 330 is the most valuable; mint condition examples will change hands for $20,000 or more, about 10X the original price.) And the attachments you mention would make it all the more appealing. The 420 series had about 25hp at the PTO and is large enough to do fairly heavy work.

For a neat comparison of gear vs hydro drawbar horsepower, a person could look at the Nebraska tests for the older IH tractors that were available both ways. For example, the IH 826 gear drive (test #1045) had 92.9 max PTO hp and 78.9 max db hp. The hydro version of the same tractor (test #1046) had 84.7 max PTO and 61.4 max db hp. Quite a difference, but hydro technology has come a long way since the 1960's.

The other thing to consider is that the lighter a tractor is for it's engine power, the greater the ground speed needs to be to develop maximum drawbar power since traction becomes a limiting factor. Most of the smaller compacts that were tested at Nebraska developed maximum drawbar power at speeds of 5 to 6 mph which is faster than appropriate for many utility jobs. Also, many of the tractors tested were heavily ballasted to gain traction. For example, the Kubota L-235 4WD had its weight increased from 2435 to 3715 pounds for the drawbar tests.

Basically, at slower speeds or when traction is limited, the maximum drawbar horsepower is not really a limiting factor for what many CUT's are used for. Actual pulling force would be a factor, but here again at slower speeds this is limited more by traction than by torque available at the wheels. Assuming that traction is the limiting factor, a hydro will pull just as hard as a gear drive, all else being equal.

I have done just what you are thinking of with my GC2300. My father-in-law has a 3-point splitter that operates off of remotes but my tractor had none. I purchased a regular splitter valve from Surplus Center and mounted it behind the seat. (I have no other use for remotes so the valve did not need to be easily accessible from the seat.) I used regular Pioneer quick couplers to be compatible with the splitter and the tractors he uses it on. I believe that the GC2300 puts out about 6 GPM and yes, the ram does move a bit slow. But, it sure beats a maul and my investment was minimal. Since my stove takes only an 18" log, I do not split anything really long and that reduces the drawbacks of the slow speed.

I seen how tightening up the pivot bolts so that the ROPS can barely be folded can reduce rattles and squeaking. Also, I am assuming that the clevis pins that lock the ROPS in position have rubber washers under them that also preload the snap pins? Not sure if your tractor is set up this way but many I have seen are. If you are needing rubber washers for your pins, standard garden hose washers can work nicely (depending on pin size, of course) and are for sure cheaper than the dealer would charge for the real thing. (Use the soft rubber kind, not the harder plastic ones.) It doesn't take much movement at all in any of the parts to make a lot of noise.

I am also in the process of lighting a 30x56 shop/garage. The trusses are on 8' centers and I am hanging three 4'/2-tube lights per truss in the shop half of the building. My first impression is that the lighting will be quite good. My own biased would be to install more fixtures with fewer tubes each to get more even lighting and fewer shadows. I chose the 4' fixtures simply because I find the tubes more accessible and easier to transport.

I have also heard about 4WD trucks with welded front diffs (also known as "Lincoln Lockers"). However, they also have unlocking front hubs that allow for good steering when 4WD is not required. Without the ability to unlock the front wheels from the welded diff (more than just shifting into the 2WD position as this does not release the wheels from the axle), the steering ability will reduced all the time. Tire wear and would be a problem as would turning a corner on any surface that damages easily. It would be your call if these drawbacks are worth it to gain additional traction that is probably needed only occasionally. For me, they would not be, but that is just my opionion.

Wish I could say the same about our weather! Right now, there is a layer of ice over everything here in central Kansas with more predicted tonight. By tomorrow night, toss is several inches of snow on top of it all. YUCK! I don't mind the snow, but I could sure do without the freezing rain. I guess it is January, though! Spring will be here soon.

Your engine cost comment makes me think of when the company I work for raised the horsepower level of one of the machines we build. This machine had a Cummins 5.9L and went up by 13 hp. The ONLY difference was the setting of the fuel pump. But, we had to pay quite a bit more for the engine. Cummins (and other engine OEMs) sell horsepower, not cubic inches. Within a given engine family, you pay XX dollars per horsepower, even if the mechanicals are the same. Of course, there are other costs associated with increased horsepower like upgraded cooling systems, stronger drivetrains, etc, that also raise the price to the end customer.

For a four acre patch, I would personally lean toward a disk since this implement will be able to work at three or four mph while the tiller creeps along. And, should stumps or large rocks be encountered, the disk will just ride over them. I also like a somewhat more firm seedbed that the disk creates. To me, tilled ground is often too fluffy and dries out quickly. BUT, a small disk will only work three or four inches deep and that is if the ground is somewhat loose to begin with, either by plowing or chiseling. The tiller would go twice that deep.

Archdean, that is probably true! If it weren't for imported hedge trees (osage orange), it would be pretty barren. Not as treeless here in central KS though as out west. (Course I wouldn't want to cut even one osage orange without a good chainsaw!)
When I was in college here in KS my roommate was from PA and Dodge City was as far west as he had ever been. He thought it was really barren. One Thanskgiving he went to my home in SE Colorado with me. We drove a ways north of my parents home out onto the prairie and literally could see for miles in all directions and the tallest vegetation in sight was waist high. Then he really knew what barren was!

All the compact diesel tractors sold by Massey Ferguson have been built by Toyosha (up to '91) or Iseki ('91 to current). Toyosha also built the Allis Chalmers and Deutz Allis compacts in the '80's and Iseki built the White compacts. I know that the site www.best-used-tractors.com indicates that Hinomoto built for Massey and AC, but according to an AGCO tractor history book I have this is not correct.

Blueman, I can relate somewhat to your situation. My dad is not a gun guy or hunter and my Daisy 880 pellet/BB gun was the first gun of any kind in our house. I was probably 12 or 13 then. It was a fairly powerful air gun and quite accurate with pellets (not so with BBs). When safe gun handling and proficiency was learned, I moved up to a 22. (My first 22 belonged to my great-grandpa, a Remington Model 4 rolling block single shot. I still enjoy that old gun!) My own biased opinion is to start a youngster out with a decent air rifle (capable of shooting pellets) and move up when you feel the time is right.

I have seen a number of tractors offered on eBay for unbelievably low prices and without reserves. Although I am not in the market (just curious), I have placed the web addresses in my Favorites to check back close to the auction close date. In every case the address comes up with a dead page several days later. This would indicate to me that these were scam or fake auctions that eBay deleted. For what it's worth, I have purchased a number of small items (all under $25 or so) and have had good success. I personally would be uncomfortable buying expensive stuff sight unseen, though.

As long as the ag tires have a suitable load rating, there would be no reason that I know of that they could not be used with a loader. The important thing with any tire replacement on a 4WD is to stay with the same diameter as the originals. The gear ratio in the drivetrain is set up for a certain combination of front and rear tire sizes and this must be maintained with the replacement tires.

Might just be my ignorance, but I shoot quite a few 22LR's without protection. Only in a rifle, though. The same rounds that are fairly quiet in a rifle are pretty noisy in a handgun. And I always use plugs when practicing with larger stuff like my 222 Rem or shotguns. In the field hunting, though, we all shoot even the big stuff un-muffled and, especially bird hunting, may fire numerous times in one morning.
My personal feeling would be that especially with sub-sonic or CB ammo in a rifle, protection would not be required for the occasional varmint shot. I have used both in rifles with good success. Keep the Aguila Colibri rounds out of the rifle, though. They are VERY quite (hammer snap is a lot louder than the actual detonation) but can easily lodge in the barrel.

This is a lot of land to mow this often and I would say go with as large a mower as your tractor can handle. A commonly used formula for machine capacity is acres per hour equals implement width (feet) times speed (mph) divided by 10. It assumes a 17.5% loss for turning, overlap, etc. Given this, a 10' mower at 5 mph would do about 5 acres/hour. So, your 17 to 20 acres would take about half a day per mowing.

What kind of grass do you have in this acreage? Is it something you could maybe hire someone to make hay with?

I have used my father-in-law's IH 706 and loader to move large piles of cedar branches with good success. He has a round bale fork (two tines, 5' long, about 3' spacing) that attaches to the loader. The trick is to stack the branches with the limbs straight, not every which way. By starting with a few larger ones at the bottom, very large piles can be moved at once.

The action you are describing is position control. Each position of the hitch has a corresponding position of the lever. For most 3-point usage, this would be preferable to the up/down control system, especially where you are wanting fine control like with a grading blade.

Speaking about HST cooling fans, I had an interesting experience with the fan (or lack thereof) on the Airens S-16H I bought from my Grandma after my Grandpa died. He had purchased the tractor new in '78. When I was doing a little work on it, I noticed the fan was nowhere to be found, even though it was right there in the parts catalog. Looks like when Grandpa installed the rear PTO kit he forgot to reinstall the fan! 25 years of hard use later and the tractor is still going fine. No signs of hydrostatic problems at all. Wouldn't recommend this for your new TZ, though! And, yes, I did order a new fan.

The other day I used my GC2300 with a regular Cat I King Kutter 5' disk. I have this disk to use with my '48 John Deere M but I wanted to see how the little tractor would handle it. As expected, the lift height was fairly low and the disks cleared the ground by just a few inches. Power was for sure not a problem but in soft ground where the disk sank in deeper the traction was marginal, even with 4WD and bar tires. Raising the disk slightly in these areas eliminated the traction problem. Since I have a larger tractor, I will not do a lot of heavy drawbar work like this with the GC, but then again you won't see me mowing my lawn with the old JD, either.
For what it is worth, King Kutter and other brands have dedicated products built for sub-CUT's that are made to work with the limited hitch lift height. The sub-CUT disk that King Kutter offers is nearly the same as mine but has smaller blades and a lowered hitch which should make it pull a bit easier.
