Shop manuals are expensive, the orange ink is even more expensive. If you are REALLY friendly with the guy in the service dept. at your local dealer, or the dealer himself, you might be able to bribe them to burn you a copy of the manual on CD for your computer, but I wouldn't count on it.

I still haven't got around to pulling the cover off of the loader valve to take a look inside. I did however cause an up roar at the dealer. Being this close to the border there seems to be only two ways of installing a hoe: There way and the NH way (wrong way). Upper management to there memory has never set up a hoe the NH way. Under great protest the new guy (new service manager's hire, both being of US decent)set up a new TC33D w/hoe the NH way yesterday for all to see. It's great! All connections are in easy reach, everything works, the hoe runs smoother with the 3/8 input hose, you don't need the extra jumper rapped around the pto shield to make the 3pt work, there's no ties around the loader lines or rear axle, it's clear the input came from the PB and the output into the tank... My tractor is scheduled to be replumbed next week. I'll sleep a little better and so will TomG. I learned a lot, Thanks! Oh, the dealer said they have a new policy at the dealership called
"The Todd Policy". I wonder what that means?

While I have seen VERY out of balance units (bent spindle) run for a long time, it is very hard on the driveline, tractor included.

In a perfect world you the blades come from the factory balanced, and you never hit anything to damage them. Yeah right, I know what your thinking, Martians land at your place and leave rocks behind every now and then to keep you on your toes.

They don't have to be perfect, but close is a good thing. If they are well balanced the cutter should run very smoothly with no noticeable vibration at all. In a severe case I have seen one that was so far out of balance the operator was complaining about his hands going numb from the wheel shaking. Not good.

The other point that can extend the life of your unit is the gearbox lube, check the owner's manual for your unit, a lot of them call for the unit to be filled with GREASE not gear oil, however few people (mechanics at the dealer usually) follow this instruction. Under heavy loads tremendous heat can be generated, proper lube will of course help this, this is especially important in high ambient temperatures.

sounds like a silly salesman tactic! ihave the 419 loader and i've lifted my 6 an a half foot disk and my box scraper togather, weighing around 1000 lbs and it has less cap then the 430. as a matter of fact mine say's max cap of 8 something and it easly lift the 2 componets togather,note though the rear end did get a little light.

Thanks, TomG, these are all good points that I hadn't thought much about.

The land is generally gently rolling so tippiness isn't a big issue. There is one area that has a ~20% grade but it is already cleared so I won't be working there.

Most of the fir trees are all fairly small with no heavy material high-up, but yours is a good safety reminder. It just takes one.

I didn't think diesels required spark arrestors? At least that's what one dealer told me. Was he wrong?

There are three frame sizes in the NH compact tractor line. You are looking at the largest frame size. In that size they have 35, 40 and 45 HP engines. The difference from going from one engine size to the next is about $1000 more or less. To me it is worth going to the larger engines in the 40 or 45. The larger engines are four cylinder rather than three and have more torque. You are moving roughly the same weight on any of the large frame tractors, so more power goes directly to the ground and translates into more capability.

I bought a TC45. I like manual transmissions better than the hydros, but I think that I am probably in the minority in that respect. I also live in the mountains, so my TC45 only produces about 40 HP much like a TC40 at sea level. It is a fine combination.

If I am remembering correctly, I paid about $19K for the TC45 with 16LA FEL including tax. So, subtracting $2K for two engine sizes and adding $2K for hydro means that your price is in the ballpark. If you get the zero percent financing, it helps even further.

The dealer had no problems with the A plan as he has done them before and would accept them. It was Ford that said it was no longer available. I am elegable for the A Plan and have used it many times before.

I was involved in a similar situation recently.

I bought the new place before listing the old place. I used my equity and credit to finance the deal, and got an agreement for a free reammortization of the loan once I had all of my equity out of the old property. Reammortization lets you pay additional equity into the property to lower the payments (a type of refinancing), but deciding to do so depends on need, interest rates and a host of other things.

Having both places at the same time made moving my machine shop and other equipment easier, too, because I could work at my pace and each item had a new location rather than having the whole mess dumped on the new place and working for months to get everyting sorted out.

I listed the old place a couple of weeks ago and I have had a lot of traffic already. I priced my property at $449K but there are two neighbors around that have theirs priced at $800K and $1.2M respectively. The $800K place has a slightly better view, but it is not worth 300K more. The $1.2M place sold in bankruptcy court for $500K only two years ago and the new owners "fixed it up." I do not think that they put even $300K in improvements. Both of these other properties have been on the market for months because the owners want top dollar and are being unrealistic.

People looking at my place think that they are getting a bargain because there are so many high priced listings nearby. The price for my house was established by the sale prices of other similar houses. That price was consistent with improvements that I had made on the land.

You should be fine with a 40 HP tractor. You will like the New Holland. You will probably want to consider a front end loader because they are real handy.

Mark, I'm curious if you mount your PHA with the pins in the high position to give the auger enough ground clearance and what sized auger it's designed for.

I think of PHA's in terms of the max diameter augers they are designed for. I have a 12" CAT I auger for my 24 HP Ford. I bought that instead of a 14" CAT I model thinking that the boom and shaft on the 12" may be shorter and I'd have less ground clearance problems. Besides, 24 hp wouldn't run a 14" auger very well.

I'm able to mount the auger in the middle of three pin positions on the boom but the auger point will drag when I drive over bumps. No problem really unless I'm backing up and there is enough clearance to start a hole on level ground. If I had a problem I always could use the upper pin mounting positions but I'd sacrifice some digging depth. In the centre mounting position, I can dig 4' and a bit more holes before the 3ph arms are on the ground.

I think BX's have less ground clearance than my Ford but perhaps CAT I augers smaller than my mine are on smaller frames or have shorter shafts. If so, they wouldn't have ground clearance problems but wouldn't dig as deep either without extensions. Anyway, it's a couple of things to consider when looking for an auger.

A M-110 is a more appropriate comparison as to the horsepower on an equal basis. We have several of the bigger size Kubota's out and they perform with the same ease as the smaller ones. Kubota has been building farm tractors for years.

I came across a factory recall advisory on this problem not to long ago... You need to talk to you dealer... If i remember right it had something to do with a linkage fix.. simple and painless... Your tractor, for what you paid out for it should be smooth off the start no mater how many times you have driven forward and backwards for years to come...
