I have been trying to envision your setting in Nevada for some time. Looks great!

Great tip on "Paint" for the images from my camera about 33% does the trick, you just have to experiment. Maybe I will create a howto for this off the photo page.

John, if the cost of a new 'big 3' tractor is a factor I would strongly suggest that you take a serious look at either an older 'big 3' tractor or a small utility class 2WD farm tractor. I would think (correct me if I'm wrong here Art) that $12,000 would buy you a pretty decent used 40hp class utility machine in your area.

There is a reason that there is a big price difference in the 'offshore' (from many places, not just China) units and North American or European built units, quality costs money. I don't think anyone who works in the industry would agree with the term 'rape', a dealer in my area told me recently he bases his sale prices on a 3-5% profit margin, on a $12,000 sale that equates to between $360 and $720 in profit, that doesn't sound too exciting to me.

The joy of owning a shiny new tractor disappears pretty quickly if it has problems and parts are hard to get, expensive, or both, besides which, IMHO, a strong, knowledgeable local dealer is your best guarantee of happiness & satisfaction.

All the ones I have seen, including ours, were custom made. Any welding shop (or yourself if you're handy) can make one in a few hours. The parts shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred dollars for a really spiffy one.

I just ordered a BX22 from Booth Machinery in Crawfordsville Indiana yesterday. The base BX22 TLB was $14,798. I also got the 40 amp alternator for $165, a woods 40" tiller for $1,529, a toothbar for the FEL for $230, and 3 hooks welded on the FEL for free. Total cost was $16,722. I feel like a got a really good deal. My salesmen was Gary Booth ... he was super to work with. So far so good. The tractor will be delivered Saturday, or early next week (waiting on the alternator) and the tiller and toothbar will take about 2 weeks.

Being only in the shopping mode, I don't have the experience with either machine. Now that I look at the BX2200 literature it does appear to be pin-pulling rather than unbolting as the dealer mentioned. If you have found that procedure to be quick and easy, maybe it's a moot point for me as well.

Starting procedures vary with the engine. I use partial throttle for starting after waiting for the preheat light to go off, in my particular case.

On a forage harvester that I used to have that had a Detroit Diesel engine, the cold weather start involved turning over the engine with the fuel OFF to warm up the cylinders and then turning on the injection pump to start the engine. They suggested cranking the engine without fuel for twenty seconds or so. Most procedures are much easier than this.

I agree, the 4200 is in a different class. In base weight, the BX goes 1500 pounds without the loader or backhoe. The 4200 starts out 1100 pounds heavier and goes up from there.

I don't have the exact numbers but I would not be surprised if a fully assembled 4200 T/L/B weighed twice as much as a fully assembled BX22.

Once you get to those sorts of numbers, 5000 pound operating weight, trailering with ordinary trucks and trailers becomes a concern.

Wayne - Even on a rotation where you were doing only five of the fifteen acres every year, it sounds like alot of rototilling to me. With the implements matched to a given tractor size, I'd bet that plowing followed by disking/harrowing would beat (field-speed-wise) a single pass of rototilling any day. And if you were rotating any acres out of perennial grasses, it would take more than one pass with the rototiller to "turn things under." Rototillers also make (or at least when I use a rototiller I tend to make) a very fine, fluffy seedbed - I would think almost too fine and fluffy for your purposes. Because of this, large rototillers (eight to ten feet wide) which occasionally show up at machinery auctions around here often have compaction rollers attatched to them just to firm up the soil after tilling. I think that by varying tine speed, ground speed, and how open the rear door on the tiller is, you can probably come up with a very good, firm seedbed for your needs. I just don't think it will ever be as quick and easy as plowing/disking. I have a 60 inch rototiller which I use to make planting beds for our nursery business. One spring, instead of the usual chisel plowing and disking, I decided to use the tiller to work up our half acre wildlife food plot. Never again. Definitely slower, and since the field is rocky the tiller, tractor and nerves of the driver took an unnecessary beating. If you do decide to try the rototiller, the L-shaped tines are almost always the way to go. The C-shaped tines are only recommended for tilling in wet (peat/muck) soils. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Todd, the B-21 will live under what you want to do for a long time. The hoe will out perform the B-7800's and so will the loader. The only advantage that the B-7800 would have is the belly mower but you didn't list that as a job. Time is money when working so do it right the first time. Many homeowners may run a comparable B-7800 and get your work on the weekends, stand out and make a statement with your work quality and equipment.

If the bucket is intended for the hoe, there's a good chance that sleeves are available or bushings are replaceable, so you might check for a conversion kit. I assume that the width between the loops and length of the arms the have been checked for compatibility with the hoe and that the pin sizes are the only problem.

If you haven't used the hoe and tractor with the larger bucket, you may find the hydraulics stall more easily when digging. The bigger bucket also is capable of putting greater stresses on the hoe and tractor.

With it only happening when cold it tells me it is a moisture problem some where. Now it could be in the brake if moisture got in there, but wouldn't they have figured out how to stop that by the time that tractor was built. That is not a new problem and was enjoyed by many manufacturers in the 40's and 50's and into the easrly 60's for american made tractors. There should be a type of drain for the drums that might be plugged or could it go deeper into a moisture problem in the differential?

BTBF It is a some what labor intensive. Get some upside down paint. Walk yourself thru the plans. Get your tape measure out and mark it all out. Labor is leveling the bottoms of trenches to grade to prevent high and lowspots.

AS MURF SAID: Your most critical step is setting the tank. Your grades have to be perfect. REASON: You do not have a big enough piece of equipment to reset tank if grades are off.

And like Murf said measure the distances figure your pipe slope you must have it very close to code requirements. too steep and the "stuff" will enter tank to fast stir tank and some "stuff" will head toward your leach field. To slow and you'll be cleaning your house, SOON.

As you dig if you are a little rusty with controls and get a litte deep here and there have your stone company bring you a 10-15 ton load of course sand (depending on how far your main line is) Use the sand to level the bottom of trench to grade. (Stone will also work but sand is usually half the price) Sand does not compact so you will not get any sags in the line. You should not use sand in the leach field use youe 2's (or what stone is required in your area) to level those runs to grade. You can loose what ever sand is left in you main lin trench.

The project is dooable if you have some operating skills, common sense and think things thru before you do them.

P.S. Hopefully you do not have any under ground utilities in that ares. Here we must call before we dig any thing.

Feel to free to yell at me anytime. Been there done that only with the big hoes.
