PLK is right, from my experience. I am assuming a lot when I say that Stephen is talking about perennial wild flower seeds. If that is the case, an even simpler method that requires no tractor at all is a match, just like PLK said. I burn the area for seeding late in the fall, and then broadcast the seeds prior to frost. I also recommend a cover of salt marsh hay to keep the birds from the seeds before the snow flies. It all mulches away come spring and when the first warm rays hit the area it doesn't take long to see results. Two years later, most have self-sown, and you'll find you have quite a few flowers on hand. Open ground does seem more of a sure thing, but it really isn't necessary.

Thanks. Yea, I considered that too. Deere doesn't sell them. I may check on this option. I'm afraid by the time I buy all new longer lug bolts and have the spacers made, I will have spent a pile of money. Anyway, thanks for the input.

Drove a case D33 and D35 yesterday nice machine but a little pricy.The D33 was 19,600 with a 5 ft. bushhog and loader. And yes I agree with the other post it is a twin to the boomer just red.

Been looking for tractors for about 3 months now. Drove a 790 yesterday with 70 loader, I am concerned that the loader and the 3 pt hitch are lite on capacity.I am also worried that the dry brakes will be a higher maintenance item, Price was 14,500 with a 513 cutter. I also looked at a 990 with 430 loader and 613 cutter and ballist box. Price on that was 19,900. Any info or experience with the 790 or 990 is greatly appriciated.

Ron, If you are doing some serious tree halling you will like the extra weight.
I have a 4700 and use the V4000 Fransgard winch to do a little firewood but would not put a real jag on it, it's to light. David

Sounds like you have a problem with the tractor PTO clutch. SOMETHING is slipping, if the tractor still maintains RPM's and you do not see the drive shaft turning when the tiller is in the ground. Best you see the dealer about a repair. It seems to not be right!

Jim, the hole in the block is on the left side with the rod from the #3 cylinder sticking out. It didn't lock up, it was hammering loudly and had to be shut down. I haven't drained the oil out of it, we just kinda put our tools away after it blew...... I have most of the cast parts from the block. JB weld and turn the crank? Or am I dreaming? If not, I'll check Ebay for generator or pump. Thx

I'm either going to get the 4100 with R4 (industrial) or R1 ( agricultural) tires. That's another dilema. The industrial is a couple hundred more, and would be easier on the lawn, but I have a rising mower already - not too sure how much I will be on the lawn after I do the leveling/rolling. Anybody have any Ideas?

I wanted to let all who helped me know the out come of my use of TransX . I did not put it in my tractors Hyd system. Thanks to all who stopped me and I agree. However... I did try it in the B/hoe which operates independently from its own PTO pump. If you remember the spool valve and the swing arm cylinder both leaked. I ran it for a couple of hours to work it in. A week later I returned with no expectations. To my amazment the swing arm has stopped leaking! It was leaking badly, sort of a drule like. The spool valve still leaks, maybe not as bad, maybe my imagination. I thank all who responded and I still won't put it in the tractor.

Willie; Pretty subjective quest. There are experts on this site that own one or all of the units you describe. Here's my take. Yanmars are no longer manuf. for U.S. import. You will either be buying a grey market import or an older US model. Parts are readily available for both thru a number of US Auth. Parts Dlrs. don't worry about parts. Yanmar was a very well made tractor with many sophisticated features that the others did not have. Rather than expand here you can go to Yahoo Yanmar owners club and get more info. Deere and Kubota are also fine machines. They have a wide dealer, parts and service network that is usually close to wherever you are. Tire setting does not effect HP as far as I know 25hp is 25hp in any language. It does effect stability, Tires can be set at several width settings on most compacts and this can be changed easily. Most on this board recomend the widest. All of the tractors you mention range up to about 35 hp. After that they ain't compacts anymore. We need to know which model you looked at. Lastly, what are your expectations and budget? Deere and Kubota would be better if you can't do any work on them. Yanmar is a fine tractor but it will be more of an advenure. You should research this site and Yahoo and the links. BTW, I own a Yanmar 336 D 33hp.

bhusse01, Its a 4300 with hydrostat trans, 4WD. It has a JD 420 front end loader with a 60" heavy duty bucket. FROPS = foldable roll over protection system (roll bar). R4 tires = industrial tires. The equipment is clean and in good shape. There is over a year of warranty remaining on the tractor. No trailer. I've had an offer of around $19K, but I've not seen any cash in my hands yet....so..make me an offer.

My idea of price would be a wild impression. Dealers have factory kits for most tractors, and I'd check with a dealer, although my impression is that they're expensive. A do it yourself can be put together from places like Northern Hydraulics for a lot less money, but mounting would be a problem. My SCV is mounted on a pipe and pedestal that is fairly specific to the tractor. A dealer kit probably would include the mount. The hook up itself should be fairly straightforward. Essentially you're adding an auxiliary hydraulic system. Many tractors have an aux system outlet on the manifold block/diverter valve assembly on the side of the engine. It's just a matter of connecting the inputs and outlets and throwing the valve to 'aux'. If the SCV is a three hose system, the low-pressure outlet has to be connected to a return line. The diverter selects between remote (3ph) and aux systems. Since both systems can't receive flow at the same time, a common installation is to connect the 3ph input to the outlet of the aux system. If the system isn't plumbed this way, then the diverter valve has to be changed to back and forth between loader and 3ph use. Anyway, a dealer kit should provide detailed instructions for various hook-ups, while a do it yourself wouldn't.

I live in Williamsport, PA. I bought the BB through my local dealer who had never heard of a BB. I sent him looking for a BB based on Murph's recommendation. The Quicktach set up cost another $250.00 USD.
I put the Curtis Plow back on today, since we are expecting the "WORST STORM IN 50 YEARS" Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. The brush will have to wait for the Brute.

Murf, I believe you had discussed some information, based on your personal experience, about using ice screws in turf tires - in December last year. I measured the tread knobs on my JD 670 rear turf tires and they only measured about 3/8 inch tall above the bare tire. I know they sell 1/2 inch ice screws but I was afraid they might result in a puncture. Could you possibly give me any advice. I need some traction on my concrete drive while pushing snow with a 6 ft blade. There doesn't appear to be room to put chains on the 31x15-15.5 tires. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking for a price check on a Kubota B6200, 2wd hydro. 780hrs 5ft kubota mower deck.Several years worth of filters,oil. Man was anal about changing filters. Looks fantastic. Has new never installed factory ROPS for it. Full service manual. 2 extra sets of blades for the deck with a brand new set on it now. Also included is a <br>4ft yanmar 3pt tiller, 3pt scoop blade.Any guess as to value of this package?

JeffM--OOPS--in my previous post, I should have been clearer on two of the linkage upgrades. Both the upgraded axle range shifter AND the FEL joystick were anodized gold in color instead of the original color. I looked at several newer 4400's today on a sales lot and their axle range shifters and FEL joysticks were black in color, so I am unsure if the color is significant in determining if the newest linkage is present. Can anyone give the code that is present in the JD tractor's serial number that indicats the year of manufacture?

I have a Valby Model 140 chipper which I use with my John Deere Model 670 tractor (18 HP; 16.5 HP PTO). The Model 140 is direct drive; the Model 160 has a belt to incease the rpms of the disk. This is desirable; the Model 140 will plug up rather easily because the disk is not turning fast enough to really throw out the chips and brush. It never clogs with chips; only with juniper needles, leaves and vines--and then when they are damp and/or moldy. Other than that I am pleased with the Valby. It is really heavy duty: thick steel plating, super-heavy roller bearings, 220 pound disk, two 4 x 8 inch knives, low-mounted chute (much safer), very nicely assembled (everything positioned correctly and the welding excellent), knives easily changed. This is actually a small commercial machine. I have cut large limbs and small tree trunks up to 5 inches easily. I don't have a power feed so I control the intake rate by hand; naturally this also means that I have to stand there and feed everything and this really slows things down. I estimate that the machine will pay for itself in about a year (calculated on the basis of renting a chipper locally for $100 a day and not considering hiring anyone to help). I will never wear out this machine; it's bulletproof. I mount it on the back of a Quick Hitch and because of the 600 pound weight of the chipper the front end of the tractor becomes very light even with 200 pounds of suitcase weights on the front.
