MC, add my agreement to Bird's comments. I think something the size of a BX1800 or BX2200 would be ideal. By all means also look at and try the small Boomers (TC18 and TC21), the Kubota B7400 and B7500, and the JD 4100. The BX1800 and BX2200 are marketed as sub-compacts, while the other five mentioned above are small compacts in the 16-21 hp range. All these tractors are in a different league than the JD400, in my opinion. They all have their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses, so it is a good idea to drive them and get to know them before laying down your hard-earned cash. These tractors are not inexpensive from my point of view, but they are well worth it because they will last you a long, long time if you treat them well. Four-wheel drive is important, especially with your slope. And oh yeah, definitely plan on a loader at some point. If your legs trouble you, then you aren't going to be pushing a wheelbarrow up and down your slope. Until you have one, you just can't believe all the things you will use that loader for.

Frank, I know that tradeoff game! Last year when I bought my JD4400 with loader and backhoe the "price" was a swimming pool in a couple years at our new house. One of my uncles heard this story and said to my wife, "Surely you don't mean an in-ground pool?" To which she replied as she pointed to my tractor, "Does that look like a riding lawn mower to you?"

Can anyone help me with the value of a Kubota L3250 (1988/89?), with loader. I am looking at one for about 13,000. It is a 4wd, has 800 hours on it, good bar tires (loaded-calcium) and is in pretty good condition. It has the SSS transmission. It is 40 hp (32 at the PTO). There seem to be very few of these around, so it is hard to compare, and since it's about 12/13 years old, I'm thinking it's a little overpriced. If anyone can help me, it would be appreciated. Also, if you know the replacement model, let me know.

i have used one of these roller pumps for a few years, i bought mine from northern tool, works well, i have a 23 hp tractor, the pressure you get depends on the speed of the pto, i use it to water transplanted trees, etc, you could also use it as a sprayer if you need to, just get a spray gun and hook it up. i have also seen these pumps at quality farm and fleet stores, most farm and tractor supply places should carry them they are a pretty common item.

I recently bought a YM2610 (Approx 1980, 3 cyl, powershift, 26-33 hp). I've heard various HP ratings for this model. Does anyone know the true PTO or engine HP? Also, does anyone out there know if this model crosses over to an American market Yanmar? Are user and service manual available?

Yea, I think I'll just have to get out the old pencil and paper and see if I can design a system with a timer, PVC pipe and soaker hoses. Should be fun. I could use sprinklers but like you I'd rather put the water where it's needed. The only problem I've found is that during the summer varmits will chew through the soaker hoses to try to get to the water. There has to be a good, efficient way to do this, I just have to give it some more thought.

Thanks , bird for the info. I just checked the figures on the 790w/loader and the 2600w/loader, and the 2600 is $1390 less than the 790.I'll be going to another dealer today and check on what he has to offer. Really would like to have a compact though, like a 2410 w/loader.I got so many numbers floating around in my head now i feel like a computer,lol.anyway, thanks for the input. "keep the shiney side up and the rubber side down" JT.

Kill switches on a diesel usually are fuel cut-offs--the can be solenoids or manual valves. I believe that a decompression valve probably would kill a diesel, but it may not be a good idea if there is a proper kill switch. Using a decompression valve probably puts a few cycles of incompletely combusted fuel into the engine before it stops. You may be able to tell if the knob is a decompression valve by starting the tractor without preheat and at minimum throttle. The engine shouldn't start immediately. If you pull the knob while the starter is turning, the engine should sped up if it's a decompression valve.

Clutch pedal free-play is supposed to ensure that the clutch is fully engaged when the pedal is out--even when a bump is hit. Free-play also ensures that the throw-out bearing is pulled off the clutch disk so it doesn't continue to rotate. However, if there is too much free-play, a clutch may not fully disengage when the pedal is in. Gears may be hard to shift and the tractor may creep when stopped. If it's a two-stage clutch, the PTO may not stop. The adjustment specs for many tractors are fairly liberal, and a clutch may meet the above requirements over a fair range of pedal adjustment. If none of the above seems to be happening, then the clutch adjustment may be OK irrespective of the measurement. However, reading the manual and talking to a dealer is always good. In general, too little free-play is more apt to damage something than too much. With too much play, you'll notice that the PTO doesn't stop or the tractor shifts hard, which are signs to fix something. There is a chance of some disk wear if there is some clutch drag too small to notice. However, that would be a problem mostly if the tractor is stopped in gear, with the clutch in, for extended periods. It's usually better to put the TX in neutral during a lengthy stop.

I wonder if the HST problem was solved? I didn't comment since I don't know much about the tractor of HST's. However, I do wonder if the tractor may be using standard weight petro hydraulic oil. Many people in cold areas go the a synthetic, or at least a multi-season petro oil year around due to the cold winters. I use multi-season petro oil in my gear tractor, and I still use magnetic heaters on the sump when it's real cold. My owner’s manual doesn’t mention either of these things.

Yeah, Pete, good reason for the ags. I particularly like it when the beemers and mercedes try to pick their way down the road after my dairy farming neighbor has been out "doing some spreading". Makes you want to get some cattle.

Although I may have the proper insurance to cover my tractor and trailer, I was reminded (1) that I needed the proper truck tag on my vehicle. For the weight of the tractor, trailer, and truck, I needed a commerical tag for the correct load ($107.00). (2) My regular truck insurance (non business) may not cover my truck while pulling my load if I am involved in an accident on my way to cut my brother's grass. This would be consider a job for pay. "Is there an end to this".

I'm pretty sure the RM59 is intended to be a belly mower for older tractors (e.g. Ford 8N). I think it only has gauge wheels in the rear. A real PITA to get on and off.

Has anyone mounted a LA352 loader on a B2400? The LA352 is intended for B2410 which has increased pump capacity (7 gpm vs 5.8 gpm). Will the loader operate as well (lift & dump rates)? Would like to hear comments from anyone with this setup.

Yes Jeff, I got the loader too. I think that a lot of dealers have a opening price. They may come down some from there, and a few are willing to wheel and deal. The first price I received was the "fair time" special. I told this dealer that I should be able to buy that tractor (L3010), for X amount of money, based on national information I gathered on the web. After he checked his invoices, he agreed, reducing his original price by $2,100.
