I also have StateFarm ins. and for me here in Ohio there was no horse power limit, the tractor and all equipment is covered only if stored or being used on the property stated on home owners policy. The only time the tractor is covered being trailered is on the way to or from the the dealer. I do use mine away from the home for buisness so I got contractors coverage through StateFarm about $110. a month, covers all equipment and tractor and includes 500,000 liability for property damage and etc. no matter how equipment would get damaged it's covered, but I am only insured operator. budinohio

Todd, I'm also a fan of being well-insured. This whole thread is what prompted me to call my insurance company, and the result will probably be that I get a rider or whatever to cover me and my tractor in the event of any uses I foresee (driving on the road, someone else's property, etc.). It will be interesting to see what Amica says I'm exactly covered for now. Also remember that the state you are in makes a difference with insurance. I've been with Amica for auto and homeowners for over 25 years back and forth in three states (including VT!) and the policy terms and coverage were different in each of the three states.

Cutter, I would strongly suggest that you rent some type of compacting machine to settle your pad before the concrete pour. The dozer should be able to compact the deeper layers, but even that top layer after you finish grade will probably continue to settle after a month. A 5 hp plate compactor will effectively compress up to about 6" of material and will take 3-6 hours to do a 45x70 area real well. A day's rental of one of these units is $40-70 in my area, depending where you go. That's well worth it to save big cracks and heaves in your floor, plus you don't have to wait a month to continue your work. I've had very good luck with the fiber-reinforced concrete in the house/garage we recently built.

I'll add my 2 cents worth on the loader lift discussion. While I have a new TC40D sitting in my shed, when I was comparing the specs to the JD's it seemed the more fair comparison to the NH 35/40/45 would be the JD 4500/4600/4700 not the 4300. If I recall correctly, the JD 4500+ series lift capacity was over 2000 lbs. I'm sure someone on the "Green" discussion boards will know for sure. Either way, which of us is really going to lift that much with the loader. Even with a bunch of ballast in the rear, lifting that much weight very high would make me need to go into the house and change my drawers. I agree with the safety minded posters. Let's all live to buy another new tractor in a few years.

Congrats on getting a really nice setup! I have a JD4100, no NH dealer in my area, but I have to admit that I am partial to those Blue Belles - they're some pretty handsome looking tractors...

Ted makes a really good point - it'll be to your benefit to involve everyone in the family as much as you can. Not only will you have someone to mow the grass come flyfishing time, you can also make sure that everyone knows how to be safe with your new tractor. The only thing potentially more dangerous than a tractor is a chainsaw.

My wife has become MOST fond of Ms Jenny (the JD4100 tractor). Not long ago, she suggested that I should give her Ms Jenny, and go buy myself a JD4400. Gosh, I love that woman....

I purchased my TC33D in Cambridge, Oh from a dealer that I am more than pleased with for a very good price. The dealer is Ross Equipment, 5640 Glenn HWY Rd (Rt 40 west of Cambridge) - 740-432-4556. It's a family run dealership - you will deal with Mr Ross, his wife, or daughter... His mechanics are experienced & very helpful. He offers no bull & doesn't look for any. If you like dealing with car salesman, don't go to Mr. Ross. I think that he has 29's on the lot right now. Good luck - let me know if I can help further...

Ted & Murf Thanks again; I agree with the aditive advice. The O-ring sounds very likely. Ted mine is the in-series assmly. you describe. But honestly, I can't take that apart myself. This tractor was in rough shape when I bought it. I got it cheap, put some $$$ in it and it has revived to my expectations. I have followed all you experts on this board and learned alot. Just to carry this to the end I bought some Trans-X and label lists among others the following:Stops leaks from seals in Hyd. control systems, construction equip., Hyd. pumps.,lifts,and accumulators. Would this sway you guys at all? Sounds so good I may take a spoonful myself! Shotcut Rick

I have a 4100Hydro with 410FEL and the 54" Belly Mower, purchased July of 2000. I've cut the grass several times with it, and the mower seems to work exceptionally well - it's shaft driven, cuts the grass cleanly, I'm very happy with it. I also have the MCS (bagger with vacumn). It works exceptionally well also. My wife (who has some physical handicaps) uses the tractor also, so we decided to trade the manual dump bagger for the Hydraulic dump bagger. I haven't used the Hyd. Dump unit yet, but I suspect it will work as well as the other parts.

The belly mower is not difficult to install & remove. There's the PTO shaft (connects to the tractor's Mid-PTO), two pins in the back, and a front bracket which locks with a captive pin. You do need to rotate the Mower gage wheels 90degrees, and turn the tractor wheels all the way to the left to install/remove the mower deck. It's not as easy as removing the FEL, but let's face it, the hardest part about removing the FEL is getting off the tractor and unhooking the quick-connect hoses. I'd say it's not any more difficult than removing/installing a 3PT mower.

The Belly Mower is raised and lowered via the 3PT hitch. There are brackets that connect back to the 3PT. I understand that JD has a "clamp" kit that holds the belly mower locked against the frame so you can use the 3PT for other things without removing the mower. Of course, if you are planning on removing the mower deck between uses you may not need/want the clamp kit.

The mower certainly seems to be a solidly built unit. It has three blades, which are driven from the gear box via a V-Belt. The gear box is driven by the PTO shaft. All of the pulley's have grease zerks, which are accessible from the top without removing any guards or covers.

One criticism I'd have of the mower is that JD should have made the gage wheels the swivel type. I plan on modifying mine to make them that way, but I haven't decided the best way to do it yet.

One suggestion I'd make is that you get into the habit of ALWAYS turning off the PTO whenever someone approaches you while you're on the tractor. It's very easy to walk up to the tractor to talk to the operator and stick your foot under the edge of the mower deck. This isn't a flaw with the 54" deck per se, it's an inherent danger with ANY belly mower on ANY tractor. The left-hand blade is the "trimming" blade, and it comes up pretty close to the edge of the mower deck.

If you decide to get any of the belly mowers, I'd also suggest that you get the Deck Adjusting gage from JD. It's a little plastic doohickey (that's a technical term!) that let's you adjust the deck front-to-back and side-to-side very easily. It costs less than $10 and it's definitely worth it.

I was looking at the rear of my tractor the other day and noticed something. If you look at the back of the tractor, just to the right of the axle/differential housing, there is an aluminum cover, that looks like it is a cover for auxilary(3rd) hydraulics. Has anyone else noticed this? Is that what it is? I thought a 3 SCV was not available, but it looks like basic plumbing for it, but I assume you would need to add a valve to control it? Does anyone know the answer to this?Thanks

I agree with you Gary, NH should have put retractable seat belts in. I have a 35D, and there are holders for the ends of the belts when they are not in use, so they don't "bang around". But still...retractable would have been better.

Randy, I finally remembered to look at my 790 last night. I found the holes you mentioned. Each of mine has a light coat of oily dirt around the hole indicating some presence of oil, but no actual leakage. It appears to be a vent hole as someone else mentioned. If there is leakage I'd suspect a seal within the axle housing. Hope this helps, Rob

First let me clear up about JD and Yanmar. For years Yanmar built most of JD's compacts. Today Yanmar as I understand builds the 4100 and that Yanmar engines and other items? are used on the 4200s and up. You mentioned saving money and you will save some over a new tractor. However, you can likely purchase an older MF or Ford or whatever for about the same cost as a Yanmar. I would recommend that you visit the following link for more information regarding Yanmars and perhaps some info regarding costs. I will tell you from personal expierence, I see you are in Virginia, that you can buy these tractors cheaper in TN and AL if you don't mind the drive. For whatever reason they seem to be prouder of them here in NC and VA. Example: I know of a Yanmar 2310D and a 2402D in TN for $4,500.00 each. This would likely compare to $6,000.00 and upward here.

Randy, The only belly mower I'm aware of is the JOHN DEERE 60" for the 790.There are several tow behinds though!Check out this link for thoughs.
