I would like to purchase a 4x4 tractor in the 20-30hp range. Is the Yanmar a good choice? will it handle a loader ok? Is the powershift trans the way to go?I plan to use it for all around tractor work, any downside to Yanmar? What questions should I ask a Yanmar dealer before buying? What is the average price for these tractors.Any info would be appreciated, ThanksPat in Va.

Hey Pat,
I'm not sure, but I think John Deere now owns Yanmar. They used to buy their engines, but the dealer here told me they ultimately bought the company. That would be JD's style. If the company makes a good product, buy it, tweek it, paint it, badge it, and then stand behind it. If I'm correct, then Yanmar is probably a pretty reasonable tractor, or at least it has a good engine. It will never have the resale value of the big three in compacts, JD, NH, and Kubota, but then it probably won't cost as much either. Since you won't have a company of JD's stature standing behing a Yanmar, make sure your dealer is really good! The big three really do stand behind their products, which might be worth some extra money. Sorry I'm not much help here. From curiosity, what do Yanmar's cost near you? ....

Hi,

I have just started price shopping tractors, I don't know what a Yanmar tractor should cost, but I am sure that it should be thousands cheaper than JD or Ford.

Pat ....

Pat,

First let me clear up about JD and Yanmar. For years Yanmar built most of JD's compacts. Today Yanmar as I understand builds the 4100 and that Yanmar engines and other items? are used on the 4200s and up. You mentioned saving money and you will save some over a new tractor. However, you can likely purchase an older MF or Ford or whatever for about the same cost as a Yanmar. I would recommend that you visit the following link for more information regarding Yanmars and perhaps some info regarding costs. I will tell you from personal expierence, I see you are in Virginia, that you can buy these tractors cheaper in TN and AL if you don't mind the drive. For whatever reason they seem to be prouder of them here in NC and VA. Example: I know of a Yanmar 2310D and a 2402D in TN for $4,500.00 each. This would likely compare to $6,000.00 and upward here.

If I can be of somemore help, feel free to ask.

Jerri ....
