Hillbilly, There are several posts on the subject of chains on this board. For eg; check out last November/December some of the same questions were asked and answered. It all comes down to what will work best for you in the situation that you are working in.I have found that TRYGG TRACTOR chains give me the best allround performance in snow,ice and mud.I cut alot of hard wood in hilly country using a JD 1070 MFWD and chains are a must. I have them on the rear only because I'm afraid of puting too much strain on the front end(these things really get a bite).

Joe, Steve from Mich, I have brushogged for money, using a jd970 fwd w/fel and
6' hog and used all of my 20' trailer for that set up. In Mich you must have trailer brakes and i dont think you can buy factory built trailer without them.
My well built homemade trailer which I bought used started out with a ball
coupler which was marginal so I swapped some lawn seeding for welding and got a
nice pintle ring/hook setup which felt more solid when towing. I would avoid
trailers with angle iron construction and two piece mobile home style wheels.
Nice features would be the horizontal bar at the front of the deck so your
bucket slides into if you chains came loose and 8-bolt wheel pattern if you had
to use your truck spare in a pinch. Also the short wheel base of a tractor puts
a lot of weight on the back of the trailer as you load/unload compared to putting a car on a car hauler so the triangle ramps are handy especially when
you get that bobcat that your wife wont let you have!

I hope your still around eric, I just read your posting. I looked into the
flexi planters to mount behind my 5' rototiller. I Know they are very versatile
as you can buy plates for it that will distribute seeds from tomatoes to potatoes, I remember they got very pricy. Right now I tow a jd 290 planter
(old iron) for corn and beans, its a two row planter, with the flexis I could
plow and in another pass rototill and plant three rows at the same time. look
for used ones at veggie, potato, or sugar beet farms. I found that 290 planter
at the neighbors for $100 compared to about $2000 for two used flexis and the
tool bar it takes to mount to a 3pt.

I've modified all of my battery boxes to fit a standard automotive 12 volt battery. Any automotive type has plenty of cranking amps. My favorite is the Optima Red Top, which I run in everything. The one in my JD is 10 years old this year and still going strong. The Optima is slightly smaller than other batteries and this helps when space is tight. Maybe one will fit right in the existing space.

I agree with Rob that heavier is usually better - particularly on 3pt implements. I only know of ARPS from the loaders that they built in the 70s and 80s. They were one of the companies that made the "factory" loaders for some the imported compacts of the time. These were very good loaders. They were high quality, and ARPS was one of the first to use high strength steel and geometry to get strength without adding too much weight. I don't know about their 3pt implements, but the rake it is probably worth a second look.
I made a toolbar type rock rake on my tractor. It didn't work well for me because it was too sensitive to the pitch of the tractor, alternately digging in too much and then lifting too much. Also, it picked up so much weeds and sticks that it kept fouling the tines. Maybe if it had angled more and had a set of gauge wheels it would have worked better. If I tried it again I would make it more of a towed implement than a 3pt type implement. I'd still make it attach to the 3pt hitch, but with lots of weight to keep it down, and work it in the "float" 3 pt position - setting the ground engagement by means of the gauge wheel height.

If the engine has a bunch of hours on it, you might want to run a compression test on it--especially if it's a bit hard to start or misfires at start up. Below is a list of causes for lack of power or speed from my repair manual: Incorrect throttle adjustment, incorrect maximum no load speed, fuel starvation, air in system, incorrect timing [pump], low compression, incorrect engine timing. Hope you already found the problem before reading this. You would need a manual to check out some of the things on the list.

I bought the 62 inch model from my kubota dealer. He also had a Meteor and a LuckNow. These were nicer. I paid 1365 for it. I needed it to clear a 150' path to my well which is going to be drilled down from 705' to about 1100' next week. On my B2710, it had no trouble moving 18" of settled Vermont snow. It was 24 inches a week ago and we haven't had any thaws.
If I hadn't tied lexane to the ROPS, it would also be easy to adjust the manual shute, now it's a reach around the plexiglass unless I take off the seatbelt, but it still turns easier than any other model I tried. These are worth looking at for anyone interested.

James I'm going through the same battle the TC-33D has 800LBS lift at bucket
The TC-35D has 1800LBS thats a heck of a difference I priced both packages the TC-33D is 19,863 w/ 7308 loader , 914A 72" rear discharge mid mount mower and 5 ft rear blade best price.
The TC-35D is 22,849 w/ 16LA loader , 914A 84" mid mount and 6 ft back blade
I'm still haggling on the TC-35D it's a much better but also much bigger tractor I was surprised at how much bigger physically and storage becomes a factor for me. hope that was helpful , Eric

I asked a similar question not too awfully long ago to this same group...and let me say, I am very glad that I payed a local fellow to cut in my 1000' through-the-woods roadway. He will be returning this spring to dig my 1000' electic line trench, footer trenches, etc. If I tried to do the work myself, I would STILL be working on the road. Not only are the smaller machines slower...the skill of the operator makes all the difference. I had never been on a tractor before...and while I like to think I learn quickly and have become somewhat proficient, I still watch experienced operators with a big smile. It was so nice to walk through the woods and say "Well, I kinda thought I'd cut the road in over here like this...and start a turn here like that..." 13 hours (and $650) later, his "small" JD 350 dozer had the roadway cut in. And that includes removing about 100 stumps...albeit mostly 8-10" oak/maple. Installed 5 sluice pipes for drainage with his TLB and then trucked in 40 loads of "creek gravel" for a road base.

I'd recommend leaving all the "heavy" work to the larger machines, unless you truly have a lot of time on your hands. Yes, it does sound sacriligious. I thought so as well. Sounds like you might still need the 850 for road maintainence, snow removal, and other building related work.

Yep, I'd still be pulling stumps! :)

Tony, You didn't mention if it was 2 or 4wd? I will assume 2wd with an $8K asking price. For comparison, about 2 years ago I purchased an early model 2wd JD-950 w/75 loader w/power steering and just over 1500+ hours for alittle over $7,000. The tractor had been stored inside most of the time and I would rate it in good to excellent shape. Hope this info. helps and good luck with the purchase. Regards mark

To bad about the dealer in your area. Mine is 15 miles a way and excellent. I wasn't sure about the Cub's before I bought this one but knew the dealer was a good one so I decided to get it. I have gotten the manuals and just some filters from them, but the parts people are great. They have to spend a little more time looking because they don't sell the Cub compacts only the Boomers new there. Goes to show you how important a good dealer is.

Happy to hear that I'm not the only one who heard of tread print readings but couldn't see anything useful. My 1710 doesn't seem to have wind up problems now, but a former owner might have. The 4wd linkage was bent and had a broken pin that had to be repaired this summer. I've heard of people who do have wind up problems lifting the front wheels with the loader before engaging or disengaging the 4wd. It works, but fixing the problem seems a better approach.

Funny thing, I got the tractor back from the shop from the 4wd repair and checked tire pressures a few days later, The front tires pegged my 20# gauge. Guess the mechanics thought I should run a lot more pressure than I do. I let a bunch out.

I helped a friend do some tire pressure juggling in the late 60's, but not on tractors. He had a SCCA novice racing license and used to enter autocrosses sometimes. He'd put on racing slicks and then roar around the course parking lot skidding the car. We'd adjust the front and rear pressures to get the right degree of over-steer for the course. Maybe radial tires have changed the practice, but racecar drivers use tire pressure to adjust traction as well as tractor owners.

Don't know what type of tillers you are refering to but I just purchased a Bush Hog 72" tiller to put behind a NH 35hp tractor. I rented many tractors, all with tillers prior to my decision. Most of the tillers were 60" being run by a 26 - 30hp tractor. This larger one I purchased has no problems being behind the 35hp tractor. I live in North TX where the ground is incredibly hard. Usually I reserve tilling after a rain regardless of hp or width of tiller. so far so good with 15 hours on the tiller.

I just purchased a new TC35D, hydro, loader, 4WD, R4 tires, ROPS, but NO SS (don't miss it) for $19,000. I voluntered 50% down and financed the rest with New Holland finance for 1 year at 0%. I could have financed the entire thing at 0% but it gave me a little leverage. I think there was a little more room in the deal but I want to have good service and relations with the dealer and didn't want to be know as the small tightass farmer. I got a BushHog 72" tiller for $1,500 and will go back and get a BushHog box blade later this month and will pay between $424 - 475 (a fair price with them still making money of the list of %550).

I've tilled gardens for 4 or 5 other people, but there's no market for it in my area. Nearly anyone who has a garden also has a tractor and/or a walk behind tiller.
