Brian,if you search the archives on this board for 4000 series problems,you will find you're not alone.Deere has had a lot of problems with the early models such as yours.From what I have seen lately,Deere is trying to address the problems,and improve on the newer models.I'm not Deere bashing here,I would say for every 1 unhappy owner,there are 100 happy ones.But if I were you I would try to obtain an extended warranty from the dealer or Deere,so you're covered until they get the bugs worked out.If that does'nt set with you,than I would try to sell or trade,there is nothing worse than being disatisfied with anything you have purchased.I know this has crossed your mind,and you feel like you'll lose your butt,but a mans pease of mind is worth quit a bit.

Murf: You're probably aware that the codes governing septic systems etc. were radically changed in Ontario a few years ago. I'm not sure that all the newly privatized health inspectors quite have their minds around the new codes, or maybe the new codes aren't quite consistent. As far as I know, a biffy is still legal. In the original code revision, a new biffy could be installed provided there was no pressure water on the property. I believe that stipulation was removed just last year, but there is still strong encouragement to put in a new code, and very expensive, septic system. The Director of the District Health unit had to approve our application for a gray water leeching pit rather than a septic system for our camp (one or the other is required). We have a composting toilet, but as far as I know we could have built a biffy instead. The health inspector was very definite that that the liquid over-flow line from the toilet couldn't go into the pit. I think the distinction is that human waste and gray water can't be mixed. Any liquid over-flow would be more than just urine, but I suppose the idea is that a little waste and a lot of gray water has greater potential for contaminating ground-water than a well built biffy.

Haven't seen or heard anything to indicate NH is pursuing that. I can tell you Woods loaders offer quick-tach adapters compatible with most brands of skid loaders. We haven't mounted any on TC class III's yet, but have on 1920's and class II TC's. Don't know if a Woods in that size would be SuperSteer compatible, something to check on.

I recently purchased a new 790 with a loader and are beginning to research implements. I'll be using the machine to contour dirt roads, assist in building a home, skidding small logs from the woods etc. My property is located on the side of a hill so I'm looking for any safety advise that anyone might have to offer. Can anyone recommend a good after market box grader that is well made? If a box grader is attached,is additional weight needed when using the loader? Is the loader generally used for ballast when using rear implements? What are the general rules for such? Are axle extenders available for increasing the stance of the tractor?

This comment really is about new barn building but is so far 'off the thread, I thought I'd post it as a new comment. I heard the term 'stray voltage counseling' on another site. The idea is that electrical devices have become so common in modern farming that the barn has turned into a complex electrical system. Complex electrical systems are subject to all sorts of elusive grounding and induced voltage problems. The problems are compounded by the presence of conductive animal waste and ag chemicals. A possible result is that humans and livestock start getting voltage tingles here and there. Apparently, when that happens to livestock, they tend to stop eating and develop health problems. I haven't been around livestock in a modern operation and I hadn't heard the term 'stray voltage counseling, I don't know if it's a particular service, or just an electrician who does a lot of work around farming operations. However, from my teching and sound business days, I do know that it's a good idea. Sound engineers who have systems that give singers tingles off their mics also develop health problems. I'd pay careful attention to the wiring in a barn that's intended for livestock. There are some special code requirements as well. I couldn't find an appropriate topic, so I continued using Site Chat. I thought about Landscape Design, but I concluded that a barn is a site, afterall.

My tractor doesn't have a decompression lever. I believe they are found mostly on some older Kubotas. If you've got one, the tractor probably won't start at all with the valve in. As Roger mentioned, diesels are compression ignition engines. No compression, no heat, no ignition. However, a decompression lever can help starting by allowing the starter to spin the engine faster for awhile. Then, starting is easier when the lever is released. It was around 25F yesterday and snowing. My wife threatened to start shoveling out the drive entrance, so I figured I better get the tractor out even though it was still snowing. It was too late in the day to plug in the block heater, so I just started up the tractor. Thirty seconds on the glow plugs, and it took right off. Knocked a little more than usual, but not bad. Ordinarily I use the block heater for about an hour when it's just below freezing, but I don't have to rely on it at those temperatures. The dealer undoubtedly didn't offer a solution for how to keep the tractor warm (having a heated service garage spoils a person's perspective I guess), but he'd probably sell you a block heater. That's probably a pretty good idea even in the South. Of course, having a plug in near the tractor might be my own case of spoiled perspective.

Somewhere I got the idea that a 'directional control valve' is what I call a 'diverter valve.' The diverter valve on my Ford 1710 is part of the manifold/relief valve block on the side of the tractor. The valve selects between remote (3ph) and auxillary hydraulic systems. I haven't verified it, but I think that with the valve in aux position, the 3ph doesn't work. I believe my loader and rear hydraulics are powered from the aux system, but the open centre flow is routed back through the 3ph high-pressure line. The way it's plumbed, the 3ph doesn't work if any of the loader valves are actuated.

Something like that probably can be done, but it sounds like Bird has got a line on a kit. It might be easier to get a kit, which should have good plumbing instructions.

My 5' Meteor throws most snow 20' - 30' with the deflector fairly open. The salt/snow stuff the highway plows throw across my drive goes more like 15'. Closing the deflector more would increase the distance but at the expense of more clogged chutes (I don't clog them very often now). If snow from a light fall isn't going very far, a solution is to go faster so more snow is fed to the fan. Oil bath gears, adjustable skids, hydraulic chutes and replaceable blades are some of the marks of upscale blowers. The Meteor has about half of those, and I don't know if the blade is replaceable. But it works, and so far, it has been better than half-good. I'm not sure if the comment about a $200 hydraulic chute means it's too much or too little. I think that's probably a good ball park cost. I know I'd pay $200 and then some for mine.

I've been considering the purchase of a Great Bend 220 loader for my JD4100. The specs seem to be the same as the JD 410 loader, but the price is $500 less. I will be using the original JD SCV valve and joystick that was factory installed. My dealer tells me that even though he's a Deere dealer, he sells a lot of Great Bend loaders due to price. According to him, he's had no quality complaints, and the only real difference is that the JD loader detatches a little quicker with pins, while the Great Bend requires the removal of 2 bolts. Great Bend is a subsidiary of Bush Hog company. Any thoughts on this? Anyone have a Great Bend loader?

I also looked at the 790 in the Spring/Summer 2000, but chose a NH TC29 and have recently traded to a NH TC35. However, the best price I found was $10,900, and at the time JD advertised this price as the best in its compact tractor class(25 gross hp). It is a good price due to JD's new 4000 series(4100-4700) is competing with the 790, especially the 4200-4300, which is nearest in hp. My NH dealer also deals JD and claims that the 790 is an incredibly reliable unit with little trouble as compared to the multiple problems with the 4000 series as posted on this board. Good Luck. J. I know the specs on the 1250 and I appreciate the serial number info. I'm looking for history from owners. I had a 750MFWD and the fuel economy and it's ability to lug really made it shine. Later, had a 970MFWD and though it's economy and pto hp were fine, it didn't lug well. The dealer wouldn't stand behind it and was having problems, so traded for Kubota L35 TLB. Still, I need more pto than the L35 produces and was looking for a 40 pto machine and thought the JD1250 MFWD would be right up my alley for 6' bushogging and 6 1/2' wet snowblowing. But want to know about longevity, durability, economy and performance. CW

Yes! That price was for the 790 with mfwd, R1 and DSCV. It did not include a mid-PTO. As I said, both dealerships that I deal with gave me comparable prices in that range. Maybe John Deere has raised their MSRP on the 790 since then. Those prices were quoted during a program John Deere had in Canada that ended at the end of last Oct. Good hunting.

The JD loader for a 750 is a 67, but good luck finding one. I got one for my 750 back around 91 or 92, and the local dealer here in Maine hadda shop around to find one. Finally got one out of Indiana.

I, too, am "big-boned" (plus I don't miss many meals) and have found my right thigh constantly in competition with the DSCV control on my 4400. It helped some to move the seat up closer than I normally would, especially for using the reverse hydro pedal. I'm going to strongly consider the suggestion to decaptitate the DSCV contol lever - this might work out well.

JD4100 is built by Yanmar in Japan. JD4200-4700 is assembled in Georgia with components from all over: engine is Yanmar from Japan but we know that the infamous front axle was sourced right here in the USA by Dana corporation. I don't know exactly what is sourced where on these tractors, but it is certainly an accurate statement that the JD4200-4700 has a heck of a lot more US content and labor, whether in component manufacture or assembly, than any of the major compact utility tractor competitors. So now patriotic economics vs. perceived quality enters the picture... have at it! (PS - all my car and truck purchases for the last 20 years have been Toyota or Honda, but my tractor is a JD4400. Go figure.)

Daren, I have searched wide and far to answer the same question, hydro (TC45D) vs. gear (TC45), and was disappointed but not surprised to hear in your post yet another remark from a dealer, "the factory says.....", or somebody thinks...the hydro can handle discing, plowing, stump pulling, ag work, etc. I'd just like to find somebody on this board (and so would you and others I'm sure) who has actually in real life down on the farm done this kind of work with their TC45D, but apparently they are awfully shy. I'm resigning myself to the fact that I may have to lease a TC45D myself this spring to do what apparently nobody else has done: find out if a hydro can pull a light 6-foot disc (1000 pounds), do some cultivating, pull a grain drill, chisel some ground, pull some stumps, and have enough PTO power left after hydro drain to spin a half-way decent (tractor wide) tiller. I'll try it and let you know how things go. If the hydro burns up or the tractor runs an hour on a tank of diesel, no loss, I'll change the lease over to a TC45 or outright buy the gears. It wouldn't be such an issue for me if I was the only one driving the tractor, would just get gears. But would like to accomodate the wife with hydro. Practical real life info on the way....
