Derek, You better try to find out where Walter's dealership is located and not go there. You can tell from the attitude of his post that all he is concerned about is the price he gets for the tractor, but the buyer is only supossed to be only interested in creating a lasting relationship with his dealership. Haven't these tractor dealers learned anything from the guy from Arkanas, Sam something, I forget the last name, you stack merchandise to the ceiling, price it right and blow it out the door. It seems maybe Richie in Tenn and Carver in NC may already know this. The dealers with attitudes like Walter's are only heading for the big going

I too am trying to make the same decision. Putting aside price, I like the JD 4300 because it can accomodate a much more powerful backhoe (about a 1000 lbs more digging force). The JD also has a fully independant PTO which to me is a big negative against the TC29 unless you pony up for Hydro. Plus the 4300 weighs 3-400lbs more than the NH. Factoring in price, I have been qouted $17,100 for a JD 4300 w/ sync reverse and 420 bucket. Is this a good price from your experience? Also was qouted about $6,200 for the 48 series backhoe, but have been thinking that instead maybe I should just buy an old fullsize backhoe for $10k or so and be able to do some real digging, plus be able to move alot more stuff with the bucket. Has anyone else faced a similar dilema? Part of the reason I wanted to go with a new tractor was so that I didn't have to spend most of my free time fixing an old one. Question is would I be signing up to do just that if I picked up a 20 year old fullsize backhoe? Bottom line it's tuff to justify going for the whole enchilada with one tractor...

Sounds like a great price! I priced the 4300 HST and it was $15,900 for just the tractor!

<br>Alot of tractors have a pickup screen inside the transmission/rear end housing. You have to drain the fluid. Then find where the suction line goes in housing. (The suction is the larger tube from hydraulic pump.) Unbolt the plate the tube is attached to & pull out screen & clean. It is fine mesh & may be plugged with moisture. Eunice,<br>Given that you will be plowing, definately consider four wheel drive. Power steering is nice too, particularly if loader work may be involved. Tires are a major expense item - think agricultural since you are plowing, however, they will tear up a lawn pretty quick. Hydro is pretty expensive, but have the advantage where speed and direction changes are frequent. Geared tractors will give constant speed and overall greater pulling power. If you opt for hydro, pay attention to where the brakes are as you will use them for turning. Can't easily do that if you have to take your foot off of the 'gas peddle' first.<br>Hope some of this helps,<br>Lee

For that price you should be able to get a really good tractor not one that runs hot <br>and looks rough. Look some more and there should be a good looking tractor <br>for close to that amount

I have a 4100 HST with 60 inch deck and loader and am very pleased. I would caution you to follow the Deere recommendations for ballasting the tractor for use with the loader. It needs 6 rear wheel weights (or liquid in the rear tires) plus the ballast box with 750 pounds of weight for stability. (This is straight out of the Deere factory recommendations.) Many people do not use enough rear ballast on compact tractors for loader work.

I bought a NH 1925 from Ritchie. My experience was initially very good. Stewart was very responsive to us and handled the sale very competantly. I had several problems with them after the tractor arrived. First, the tractor was almost 4 gallons low on hydro oil, so we had to run out to the local NH dealer and pick up 5 gallons. We called Ritchie to complain that the tractor had not been setup completely and stewart offered to send us 5 gallons. After discussing it, we both agreed they would send a replacement set of filters instead (no one wants to ship 5 gallons of hydro throught the mail). Two weeks later, no filters, so I called again. Again promised but never got the filters. This may have been just an oversight on thier part, but it definitely gives the impression that they don't care about you after the sale. Also, found out later that a Bushhog finish mower (bought at the same time) had not had its belt adjusted properly at Ritchies. Found out after the mower ate the belt. I am now in the market for a new backhoe and was considering New Hollands, but I am still undecided if I will give Ritchie a shot on this one.

I have the 4100 in hydro again with a loader. I believe the hst trans probably makes loading a bucket somewhat easy but heavy clay can bogg down just about anything. The hst trans is very very expensive to overhaul; can't quote specific numbers for you but my expectation is too never have to do that. I expect the hst to last the life of the tractor. I believe the hst's weak link is the casing which is aluminum. They have been known to break on the garden tractors. I had a JD316 with hydro for 12 years of hard use (with cat. O 3 point) and had NO problems with hydro which helped make hydro decision for the 4100 easier for me. As far as your cost to upgrade now, all you can do is ask the dealer. If you want to, do it sooner rather than later as JD's 4000 line is selling well and the dealer can probably sell your unit rather easily. You may consider selling it on consignment although that may take a month or two.

I have a 1210 with turf tires and want to change to ag tires. I was quoted a price of $800.00 for a full set of 4 tires and wheels by my local Ford New Holland dealer on March 27, 1999. Where are you located? Maybe we could get togather and do a trade.<br>

Where can I find a spec sheet or does someone have the specs on a JD1050?<br>How well does a 1050 stack up against a 955 and the new 790? I went to the Deere page and could only get the 55's, 70's and newer 4000 series info. The new 790 has a good price but doesn't look like half the tractor of the late eighty's 1050.<br>Thank in advance.<br>Steve
