I think the way you have the posting process on this board is great,you have the option to post or not to post your e-mail address,just pay attention to what you are doing and make sure you dont inadvertantly post your e-mail if you want it to remain private.

I would add one more stage: after disking, leave for a week or so and spray with roundup one more time. You will be amazed how many weeds survived the first spraying.

It might also be worth watering well after disking to get any seeds to germinate.

Its much easier to get rid of weeds tat this stage than later when the grass is growing.

I'm not sure you can get anyone to commit to how steep an incline is safe; depends on your tractor, how wide apart the tires are, how low the center of gravity is, etc. I put a tiltmeter (inclinometer) on my tractor and I've mowed at 18 degrees and don't like it. I think the tractor could handle 20 degrees, but not sure my nerves could. On tractorbynet, I recently read that ANSI standards require the ability to operate on 20 degrees, but if you are already at 20 degrees or close to it, and a wheel hits a soft spot, hole, etc. on the low side, or a rock, limb, etc. on the high side, well you can imagine what might happen. In regaurds to JD reliability, I have owned 2 4000 series tractors recently. The first one was a 4300 and the second a 4400. The 4300 was new and cursed me with many problem to many to state, mainly in the mechanics. I just received my new 2000 4400 in Feb. I have had alot of hydraulic problems with it, and other mechanical problems. Having a tractor because of its color was the most stupid thing I have ever done. I have recently taken a part time job selling Case compact tractors. (New Holland painted Red) I wouldnt sell something to some one else if I didnt believe in the product, and this ic come from a Big JD fan.

After a good cool down, I checked all the fluids and tried it again. It still lugs, runs kind of rough, lots of blow by and lots of noise comming from the motor! Would you have any idea as to what went wrong and where I should start looking to find my problem? Thank you very much for your time!!!!!! <br> <br>PS I have since ran a compression check and found the rear cylinder to be down to 220 psi, the front bottoms my tester out at 325 psi.

Kubota makes great tractors. For a given horsepower they seem to be a little smalller and lighter than the competition, if that is a factor. Like one of the other posters mentioned, I was a bit worried by the brake and HST pedals being on the same side but it never has been a factor. From this board it would seem that the NH Boomers are very well thought of. The JD's seem to be good but have had problems. If I was you, I would test drive them all and choose the one that fitted me best keeping in mind that a good dealer is worth his weight in gold. So choose one that is close, has a large spares inventory and that you think will be around for a while. I don't think you can go too far wrong with any one of the major brands if it meets your present and future needs. Happy tractoring and welcome to the club.

Darryl, I don't know what experience you may have had with making guards for your brush hog, but 5 years ago, I made front and rear guards from belting material for mine, and I made them hang down too far and too close to the housing and when they folded under, the blades tore them up. So, I made my own chain guards that served the purpose, but since it was my first try, I did a pretty sloppy job. Last year, I bought a new brush hog, tried the belting material again and it didn't last long. So a couple of weeks ago, I made my own chain guards both front and rear for this brush hog; much better job this time and I think these will last. The belting material is better than nothing, but the chains are a lot better.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Getting the JD48 was a "no-brainer". Have it on order for $6900 with an 18" bucket - power beyond kit, installation, pickup/delivery, etc. included. Could have gotten it for $6745, but was from a dealer quite a bit farther away.

Took delivery of my 4700 last weekend - one powerful beast!

It depends on the size material you want to cut. Most manufacturers make three grades of cutters (heavy, medium & light). Typically, a heavy-duty cutter is rated for 3" material and has a recommended minimum 40 PTO HP. Manufacturer specs are usually on their web sites.

I think it's desirable to have a cutter that at least covers the rear tire tracks. However, many compacts lack the recommended HP for a heavy-duty cutter. On the other hand, there may be no need for a heavy-duty model. On the other hand, a heavy-duty model used with some care should work OK for occasional heavy-duty use with smaller HP tractors. Manufacturer recommendations tend to be a bit conservative anyway.

The issue really is that if you ever have a stand of heavy bush, you can't cut it easily with light duty models. A model with a slip clutch would help, since a lot of shear pins probably would be used, and damage to the cutter is possible. If the main use is expected to be in heavy bush, a smaller heavy-duty cutter may be better. Of course, take this with a grain of salt. I don't have a cutter since we prefer our bush the way it is. I'm just summarizing some past discussions. Oh yes, some people say that keeping slip clutches in adjustment is difficult.

I don't know if all Cat 1 PTO drives are equal. However, the grade of shear pin in the PTO shaft on a heavy-duty model should be appropriate for the tractor's PTO.

Having a little hydraulic fluid leak. Seems to be in the right side (axle) of the rearend. Can't find any cracks but seems to be along the gasket where the axle-housing attaches to the transfer case/differential. Also have a grease leak on the TOP of my front axle (4x4) where the wheel rotates to steer. How complicated is this to repair? This on a shibaura 1540 DT. What does a manual cost for this tractor and would it cover these repairs? Thanks

Thinking back on the many front axle threads, I don't remember there being much mention of reliability problems. There are two things you might want to consider: The first is that scuffing does put some additional stress on some of the steering components, and the front spindle bearings, plus wears the tires. After all, the forces that cause the scuffing have to also be pushing against something on the front axle. These forces are present whether you care about them or not. But are they significantly large to cause wear? Other than rapid tire wear I can't recall that anyone mentioned anything mechanical.
The other thing is resale value. Hopefully you will keep the JD and pass it on to the next generation...But we have already heard where the old axle reduced one fellow's trade in value. I thought that the upgrade was free to the original owner?? But I could be mistaken....you might want to check into it.

PJDrew, The Cub Cadet tractors are just not as popular as the big three; John Deere, Kubota, and New Holland; however, I think they are pretty good tractors. I seriously considered the Cub Cadet in 1995 before buying my first Kubota, but the ergonomics was just not there for me; it was uncomfortable. And of course that will be different for different people. The Kubota dealer, from whom I purchased my Kubota, also sold Cub Cadet and said the Cub Cadet cost a little more new, but would have lower resale value. In other words, try out that Cub, and if you like it and the price is right, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. As for the front end loader, I'm not familiar with that brand although I was on a dealer's lot this past week (one who sells Kubota and Belarus) and noticed several of those loaders lined up on the lot, but none installed on the tractors and I didn't talk to him about them.

I check the tightness on my wheels and loader about every month with a 2' breaker bar. I don't know if there is a particular problem with JD4000 series tractors, but checking wheel and loader bolts regularly is good practice. If the problem persists, I'd take off the lugs, clean and lub them, and then re-torque them. Keep in mind that the torque reading should be taken when the bolt is moving. If the problem really persists, my instinct would be to replace the bolts. If the threads have been stretched, the bolts may not seat as well.

The last time I checked my tractor, I found several loader frame mounts loose. Hey folks, do that nagging little chore today! It's a lot easier to spend 15 minutes checking bolts than it is to replace broken parts.

Murph, on some tractors,I think, if you close off the three point speed drop valve after the arms are down they wont be able to go back up until you open the valve back up. Shutting the valve off traps hyd oil in the lift cylinder.
