Hey folks,

I don't know how much oil your little compact tractors take on an oil change, but keep in mind that most heavy diesel engines (300-400 hp) in tractor-trailers hold around 8 gallons (yes GALLONS) of engine oil. Obviously, this increases the oil change intervals. My point is that the comparison between the compact tractors and big diesels may not be the best way to determine what is best for the compacts.

Ed - this is an open invitation to you or anyone else on the board. When I bought my farm, the lady who sold it took her Allis Chalmers mid size tractor with her (it was a 30 hp model or so, much smaller than a Ford 8n, but bigger than a B series Kubota). She never installed the ROPS, and left it in a box in the garage. Anybody who is handy with a torch or brackets can have the thing if they can pick it up. I live in Central New York, near Syracuse.

Looking for some help:<br>Looking at a Kioti 1714 Looks alot like the 1914 I think it would be a little older but other wise would be the same.<br>It has 350 Hrs, a 60" belly mower that is broken, and no lift arms or center link for the 3 pt ( that I can find ) and a dead battery..<br>The price: $3500.00.<br>I would like to put a small loader on it and a box scraper, use it for landscaping our 3 acres. It beats me why the Kubota has a much higher 3pt rating. JDs figure is closer to standard for this size tractor....and I believe it is adequate for anything you might want to do. What about loader capacity? You are more likely to use this to its capacity. About the tire sizes, all things being equal the larger tires are better for work on broken ground. Both tractors are good. The transmissions are good. How about comparing some things that really matter? Like how easy can you get on and off? Drive around with a few bags of feed in the bucket over broken ground. Try it with the bucket empty. How is the ride? Twist around in the seat until you are looking at the implement. How does it feel now? You will spend a lot of time bouncing over ruts and/or looking behind you. Try to work the controls in this position. Can you see the cutting edge of the bucket while sitting down and working the controls. Granted, you will have to get into a yoga position to do this, but can you do it? Does your knee bang on anything when twisted around backwards? How about the motor/transmission noise? Which one would you like to listen to for a few hours...And get on and off LOTS of times because this is what will be happening when you use it. A low center of gravity is wonderful to have. Try both on a side slope. CAREFULLY! Make the loader move a foot very slowly. Is it smooth? Run it at an idle and try the loader while turning the steering wheel. Will the loader still respond at a reasonable speed? About the PTO...Can you bring an implement up to speed with the tractor in gear before you start to move (live PTO). Very important for mowing.

Thank-you everyone for your response, I finally got to a J.D. dealer that was willing to open his book and look for what I was asking for and with your help I was informed enough to make him find it. I 've order the kit and should have it next week.

So far this is only on paper, so I thought I would throw it out for comment. I am considering purchasing a set of lifting weights and a barbell - I think thats what you call the metal bar you pult the weights on - and having the barbell welded to the rear of my backblade. If I want to move snow, I will leave all weights off. If I need to ballast the front loader, I can add 300 pounds of weight. Before I spend the time and $, does anybody think this will fail (i.e., weld won't hold up, not enough total weight, or some other flaw I have not thought of? Blade is a Woods 5 footer, tractor is a Kubota B1700.

Just a note to let everyone that the clutch shim kit that was installed seems to have done the trick. No more counting to three,,,,,, I worked the machine hard last weekend and all is going quite well. Now there is no more grinding than on any other gear shift that I have owned.

Normally:

Live/Continuous is also refered to as a 2 stage clutch (like the Ford/NH 1720 has). Depress the clutch halfway, the tractor motion stops but the PTO keeps running. Depress the clutch all the way, both stop.

Independant Live is a completely seperate clutch and lever to control the PTO (like the Deere 4000's have). Tractor travel is controlled by the foot clutch (or hydro pedal) and PTO engagement is controlled by a seperate lever. Stopping one has no effect on the other (tractor vs. PTO)

Transmission driven means the PTO is driven off of the same final drive as the tractor transmission and thus controlled by the same clutch pedal. So, you depress the clutch to stop the tractor and the PTO stops as well.

I think you might find some minor variations to my description, but the overall theory is the same.

I bought a loader tooth bar from sheafer equipment, & it made my modle 70 loader increase its digging capabilities from night to day! I dug a 20 x20 hole for my basement.

Yes, the grab hooks I see are welded to the bucket. Thanks for the comment. I'm
familar with the cast metal quality of welds but hadn't connected the idea to
hooks welded onto loader buckets. Yep, not a good idea to subject welds to much
lateral force.

I once, unfortunately, saw a truck tumble down a mountain pass in Colorado. We saw the truck at a wreckers on the way back and stopped. The person I was with identified the cause of the crash as a tie rod that somebody had welded, and not even a good weld. I don't believe the driver survived to learn the lesson. Don't try to save money by sticking critical parts together with
the little arcer in your garage.

Regarding my floating loader bucket: The dealer said "opps" when I asked whether there was any reason why somebody would want a floating bucket. I have a few less gouges in my gravel drive way now that I'm not trying to spread gravel while riding the lift control.

This was a good quality tractor. Very commonly seen. Also available in gasoline with a Continental engine. I think that the diesel was Continental or Perkins. And I think that they were 4 speeds with hi/low. I could see that tractor being worth that money, although few people would agree with me. But for $5500 it should be in extremely nice condition. New tires, new hoses, good metal - needing nothing at all and nice exterior too. Some MF 65s had a bastard-type auxillary hydraulic outlet which required you to flip a lever and select either the 3pt or aux. flow to anywhere else - like to a loader....but not both at the same time. This was a real drawback. They also used a two-stage clutch for the PTO. If the clutch is hard to depress or seems like it has no adjustment then be suspicious of a worn-out clutch - a major job, and fairly common in old Masseys. Are you sure it has power steering? A power steering pump does not guarantee that it has the rest of the power steering components. These cannot be added to some of the Masseys that came as manual steering originally. Make sure it was originally a power steering tractor.
If you are looking for this type of tractor you might also look at the JD models 3010 and especially the 3020. They were considered to be better tractors (and you are in the right price range), although they don't have that nice rounded profile of the older MF 65.

As a landscaper with a fleet of Kubota's, I can assure you, despite what the dealer says your machine will NOT suffer so horrible fate if you use non-Kubota fluids, filters, etc., so long as they MEET or EXCEED factory specifications. As a new owner you are about to find out that the orange paint we are so fond of is worth about $12,000.00/gallon, based on dealer parts pricing......case in point, one of my employees recently bought a 'female' quick-disconnect fitting at the local 'Orange store', it was $24.95, Kubota's m.s.r.p., I checked. Thye next day I bought two more at the nearest (Blue) toy store, they were $4.95, stamped with the same manufacturers name and part number as the first one......bottom line SHOP AROUND......

Vince is definately on to something here. Dealers will often push shortline attachments because they can hold a higher margin and still be less than name brand. One word of caution, most low rate financing programs offered by major manufacturers are for their brand only. Any savings gained by buying cheaper shortline products could be lost by having to pay higher interest on the whole package. On the other hand, some shortline attachments are superior in quality than name brand. Thorough comparisons are the best way to see which is the best value, regardless of price. Good luck.

Because the tractor hydraulics are a full flow type of system as opposed to a more static system like hydraulic brakes, bleeding them is not necessary. The flow will sweep out most air, and any air problem is more likely to be from air entrained into the fluid by the thrashing of the pump, cavitation, and return splash. Not much you can do about that. Cycling the loader when the oil is hot is the best way that I know of. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has found a reason to bleed the tractor hydraulics. I can't see any reason that an air compressor would be necessary, but there are always new tricks to learn.

it will be sold friday here in texas by auction. it has several implements with it that i was interested in so i thought i would go. i need a finish mower to go with my kubota. i dont think their is any danger of me stealing anything , my auction experience lately has been that stuff usually brings more than you can buy new for. those tractors around here in texas have been advertised at around 16500 so i think youre right on the price. im hoping to get the mower, a 6 foot, for around 500 or so with almost 0 time on it.

Thanks to everone for the good feed back.I thenk i'll be able to come up with something b4 long.If i do i'll post it.By the way,for rigid brush with some horizontal branches such as Honeysucke(darn stuff),a pair of bucket forks work real well.Mount them close enough together to grab the limbs when
the forks are raised.For a stubbern bush you might have to budge it some before lifting,than it should pop right out.

I am trying to decide between a JD 4600 or 4400 and was wondering if anyone knew why the 620 or 670 Disks are not listed as being compatible with the 4400? Are there other disks available that are compatible with the 4400 or is it too small of a tractor?
