Sorry to give it away Earthworks and have missed most of the threads lately but Paw Paw is a city in South Western Michigan and the home of many grape vineyards. It has rolling landscapes and gets some winds and moisture from Lake Michigan making it an ideal locale for growing fruit. Most of Welches Grape juice comes from there plus atleast a half dozen vineyards. In addition to that, apple and peach orchards are abundant.

It is becoming more popular to have knives made with wooden sides from Brazilian walnut or some type of Chinese tree. The quality of workmanship and type of wood is not up to yesteryears standards. Typically, the giveaway product has the name acid etched in the blade instead of engraved in the handles for low cost.

I feel that weighted rear tires are more or less a permanent approach for increased traction. I have fluid filled tires on one tractor that has a backhoe on it 100% of the time.

With a backhoe you need all the weight you can get on the stabilizers. The only other alternative in that situation is to have rear wheel weights.

If you are mowing lawns on flat terrain, the less the tractor weight the better. Anytime you attach the FEL and plan to use it to its capabilities, suggest mounting a rear blade as I do or rear weights.

Being the rear tires are larger in diameter than the front, rolling resistant is not as critical as in the front. A tractor with FEL and small narrow front tires will do as earthworks has mention and not float. The larger the tire, the less rolling resistance it has. A wide front tire gives more floatation. Both of these factors help and no doubt that a big wide front tire is the best. Us Yankees know that a two wheel drive pickup will go further in the snow with large narrow tires. If the tractor does not have enough weight or ballast it will spin on the top surface of the sand.

If you are mowing lawn on uneven terrain, some rear weight may be good if you are driving up severe inclines. Weight on the front will cause the tires to scuff the lawn when making sharp turns. Likewise if mowing in 4WD and making sharp turns, the front tires will scuff.

When I plow, I'm in 4WD and want optimum traction. I have the FEL on front to provide traction on the front and have weights for the rear tires. If you have a big enough tractor with lots of weight you don't need 4WD.

If you are pulling a trailer on hilly terrain and making sharp turns you want weight front and back so the pullee don't become the puller. Speed Kills!

I mow 45 degree angle ditchbank slopes all of the time with a lawn and garden tractor. I hit them sideways with my butt on the high fender and do about a 1/4 mile long stretch. Have done it now for about 20 years. The ground however is firm and smooth.

Gene was an energetic and ambitious person with a real zest for life. He always said that he had a need for speed. He had lots of cars!! <br>

He was going to partially retire after the first of the year at 65. He had unbelieveable energy and involved in so many business interests most couldn't keep up with his daily activities. Even with his level of wealth, he was a down to earth guy that was very charitable, kind and considerate.<br>

Over the weekend he was taking down a wind mill at a neighboring farm and planning to move it over to his place near his pond.<br>

After moderate work, he complained of stomach pain that subsided and then returned 5 minutes later and in an instant he was gone. No tell tale signs of anything wrong but found to have two blocked arteries.<br>

I've lost over half a dozen friends that way in the past few years. A couple more just caught it in time. I've spent the last 12 years in an office next door to him, 5 days a week and more. He is going to be sadly missed by me and all that knew him. This one has hit me real, real hard!

A .308 in a bolt action will have a fair amount of kick. Some Savage models have better recoil pads (i.e. ones with cross holes that are more flexible than the solid pad).

Some models have front sights and others don't. Is he going to be shooting scoped? Think he should grow up knowing how to use both, however, high mounted scopes allowing you to peek beneath for open sights is not handy as a young man.

I prefer semi-autos since they have a little less kick and faster shooting and also prefer the .30-06 cartridge since it has to be one of the most popular ever made. I also like .30-30 lever guns. Less kick and easy handling all about 6 1/4-6 3/4 pounds like the Savage bolt actions.

Bolt actions are usually the most accurate.

P.S. If your family genes indicate that your son will probably be tall, I wouldn't bother getting a youth model like the 10GY which is Ladies and Youth orientated. He'll outgrow it to quickly.

Suggest going used and purchase 2, one in a .22 to plink with and get lots of shooting practice and the other a higher power as you intended.

I'm not familar with any of the brands.

1. You will want ramps as you described for loading heavy equipment.
2. A beaver tail is nice also if you have a MMM with low clearance or something hanging off the back of the 3-point so it don't dig in as you drive on and off.
3. A heavy duty frame like a big "C" frame as Murf mentioned is good or a big box frame. Mine has a 2" x 6" "C" frame which is pretty stout, some are even bigger.
4. You will want standard tires and hubs to keep replacement costs down.
5. The electric brakes should have a small battery box to energize the safety disconnect. If you pull the pin and cable, the brakes should lock. If they don't, the battery may be dead.
6. With the trailer parked on level ground, go back about 25 yards away and look to see if the frame is straight. If you have a good eye, you can notice it. Mine got bent at the shop, when they placed a Roto-Pour (machine that dumps molten metal at the foundry for GM V-8's.)on the right front corner. It still drives and tracks good and is sprung about a 1/2".
7. Most trailers have a bad paint job. If it is nice, it will look bad in a short time.
8. Check out the wiring harness and see if all the lights work. Most generally you will have trouble at some point because of stone chips, mud and moisture.

From your description it looked good, so go for it!

I agree you don't want your castle so secure, that decent people can't come to your place.

My one brother-in-law had a couple of great danes that would drull over the side windows of a car and than jump up on the car and dent and scratch it real bad. Somebody tried to sure them for repair costs.

The danes also used to go over to the neighbor and kill their dogs and cats. That got to be a real problem.

Ditto on Hardwood's comments. I use a short length of garden hose (2-3 ft) and connect it to the powerwasher. I hold the loose end up, insert a funnel and pour in RV anit-freeze. While holding it up for gravity feed, crank it over like Hardwood says and your done.

Any kind of critter may have found a home in there. If you put poison in there it will die and stink up the place if it doesn't have a large enough exit. Mice usually aren't big enough to cause much of an oder, squirrels are a different matter.

Sometimes if is happy in there it is hard to get'em out. If it wants out, placing a light on the outside for guidance is sometimes helpful. In case it was easier to get in than out making a larger exit hole may be helpful. But then, more can enter. Food, water and light can draw it out!

In some States, having a trailer with that GVW requires special licensing, reflective stickers and a chauffeur's or similar license. Although it is not always enforced until you get a ticket or in an accident.

A category 0 drawbar has 5/8" dia. lift arm holes with 20" spacing. Category 1 drawbars have 7/8" diameter lift arm holes and come in models with 20" and 26" spacings. The 20" spacing is for some sub-compact tractors. I would not recommend trying to weld something up and take the chance that it would break causing some sort of injury and/or property damage.

A Category 1 drawbar with 26" spacing generally sells for about $26.00. Don't think the work and aggrevation is worth that.

I originally started this post and had problems and was really,really ticked-off. Since then, I put my own parallel printer port on, got rid of McAfee (that was hell since it had control of my computer) and they installed a new Hard drive (lost days of work) after it crashed. That was a few months ago. I didn't even use it for several months in fear it would crash. It is ok now and am using it for CAD work. Got a free virus search and have had no trouble since. Hope your troubles iron out as they did for me. Will definitely rethink another Dell purchase before automatically going to them as done in the past.

Has anyone purchased a Dell computer lately

Just got back from my annual fall tour. I spent it in Christmas, MI at the Yule Log Cabins on the Lake Superior shoreline which is just West of Munising in the U.P. <br>

The color tour was good but the leaves turned early this year and was past peak time. The sun was out but very windy conditions. I ended up about $50.00 ahead at the local Injun casino. I'm only a small time gambler.

It seems to smooth out transitions in grade, like when you drive crossways across a plowed furrow or have a loader bucket full of dirt and you drive diagonally over a city curb. It all translate back to the center of the tractor where it pivots (i.e. a wider stance and tire means the pivot angle is slightly less), but seems to me to ride over it easier.

Earthworks is correct that it really doesn't improve stability.

For some stupid reason all the tractor manufacturers usually put 8.50 wide turf tires in the front on tractors of the 26-33 HP range. You can blow these out real easy when using a loader. Mine has 10.50 wide tires.

I was looking a JD's sometime ago and saw this, noticed the next size up tractor used 10.50 of the same diameter (that didn't help since they have a wider loader bucket and heavier lift capacity thus blowing them out also). Believe they had the same rim mounting bolt pattern and possibly could have just bought another tire and rim set. Spreading the tire centers another inch or two won't hurt the bearings at all, 6 inches or so isn't good.
