One of my kids has a VW Tiguan that they usually bring to the dealer for service. But since it was long overdue I did the oil change.

I usually work on Hondas and found some interesting differences working on the VW.

On the Honda there is an aluminum sheild that is about 3 foot by 3 foot that reguires the rmoval of 3 screws and 6 twist connectors just to get access to the cast aluminum oil and and metal oil plug and the throwaway style oil filter.

On the VW there is no shield, they have a plastic oil pan that is designed to be very flat, with enough flat surfaces to eliminate the need for the shield on the Honda. That said the Honda in the same weight class SUV as the VW gets way better MPG than the VW so the shield may have some value.

Ok on the Honda working from below I use Nitrile gloves and I cannot help but get oil on my hands and arms during the change.

On the VW I had dreaded having to deal with rebuilding the environmentally friendly reusable oil canister filter. Likewise i was concerned about the plastic pan and plastic oil plug.

Well my fears turned to JOY I have never done and oil change that was sooo mess free, almost no oil anywhere, could do it without gloves even.

First VW has an ingenious tool to use with the oil plug, the tool sticks in the plug and holds onto it when you twist it and get ZERO oli on you. WOWW very cool.

Second the OIL Filter assembly is on top of the engine and drains fully as you twist it off with a 33mm socket.

This Change had me scratching my head, lauding praise on the VW engineers for making a messy job very clean, fast and simple.
