I bought this 2005 Cub Cadet Model 6284 month with 533 hours a month ago, and have been giving it the "one over" treatment... like repainting the wheel rims, and other items that needed repainted. Today, I decided to tackle the hard stuff...change oil and filter, and the air filter. The air filter never has been changed in it's 15 years of life. I called the previous owner to ask him why he never changed the air filter. He says..."the air filter was never available and didn't know where to buy one, and when he did locate one, it costs about $48.00." I told him the filter cannister was a Fleetguard model and they surely make a filter for it.
So, this fleetguard assembly appears to be the same as the one on my EZGO golf cart. And the air filter in it is a Fleetguard #AF25550. I ordered one from Amazon for $10.99 with free shipping. Could have made Cub Cadet happy paying for their on=ne at $39.00.
If I kook real close, there are many other items on this tractor that I can save money, instead paying Cub cadet their ransom fee.

Looks like a nice tractor now that you repainted some. 533 hours is not that much for such a unit at all.

I see you have a loader on with the mid mount mower. I do that sometimes as well, I find that if I forget to put it in 4WD on a slope the front weight of loader causes the tractor to slide. That s with turf tires front and rear not industrial like you have which may be better or worse. If you property is pretty flat makes no difference if in 2 or 4WD

Yes dealers try to make a living on high parts markups, can save lots if you can go direct.

Best of luck to you and your new tool !

That is a nice looking 6284. I have one as well. Mine came with the factory blade, but no loader. I purchased a Westendorf loader for mine. It works well.

I will post a few photos of mine later. ....

Joyce 1, The only items I have repainted is the wheel rims. The 812 loader has some paint chips, as the black painted bucket. The Cub Yellow on the molded plastic is really in great shape. No scraps, cracked, or plastic damage.

I have a 3 acre pond bank that I mow with the big Commercial John Deere Zero turn, and I might try the Cub Cadet sometime to see what you are referring to in your posing.
The previous owner just used it for mowing and gravel moving for a driveway.

Thanks for the message. May I ask you about your #6284 and if it vibrates when you start it up and at low idle.
Mine does some vibration at startup and when I run the engine at about 900 to 1,000 rpms it levels out. It appears to come from the drive shaft, and that is why I removing it to install new u-joint and have it balanced.
The previous never used the rear PTO. ....

Yes, but I never thought much about it. I just figured that was they way the engine idled.

I don’t know if I understand how the drive shaft can make it vibrate while at start up and idle. The drive shaft isn’t even moving then.

I will pay more attention to it today when I start it an move it around. ....

StudioDTK5, I think you should remove the center cover...the one between your legs and look what happens when you turn the key and the tractor starts. The drive shaft is bolted to the engine flywheel and it extends back to the transmission, where it is bolted to front of the transmission. No matter if you have the tractor in gear...low or high position, the drive shaft turns all the time the engine is running. This is not like a regular standard automobile transmission. ....

StudioDTK5, Just realized that I was to send you a photo of the dipstick on my 2005 Cub Cadet 6284 Hydrostatic transmission. Here is that photo.

From the cap side to the end of the dipstick, it is 5-1/2". From the end of the wire on the cap to the full mark is 4-3/4" From the "F" mark to the "A" Add mark it is 1/2"

Thanks that is perfect for what I was looking for. Now to get a aftermarket cable dip stick and repair mine to those specs.

I have pictures of the drive shaft to the transmission and a video. I hope to get that posted up today or tomorrow. ....
