I have a 2002 gas 6x4 with 18 hp kawasaki fd620d . Has about 1500 hours on it. I love it! ! I love it! ! I love it! ! !
I bought it about 8 months ago and have always seemed to have issues with the battery having to be jumped every now and then. Bought a new battery, read up on the stator function and realized at slow idle it doesn't charge, however I was aware of this and tried to make effort to make sure it did get some charge instead of putting around property but still even with new battery it needed jumped often.
The other day when jumping the battery it was like I had lost a ground somewhere and it seemed to have more juice than I have ever had but discharge light now continually shines, which I understand as the stator isn't doing its job.
I have done some inspecting and found chunks of what appear to be the magnet so here is my concern

Is this a difficult repair and/or would it be worth my wild to upgrade to the alternator I have seen here and there or would a new stator take care of the situation.

Did I say I LOVE My GATOR ! ! !

6x4s have been known to throw magnets and chunks of magnets from time to time. Also when regulators go bad, they sometimes start out not charging at idle. Sounds like you need to have a look at your flywheel and behind it soon!! Things will probably be self explanatory when you get in there. Best way to do that is remove the motor. It sounds like alot of work, but it is much easier to work on when it's out. As far as changing to an alternator, I doubt that it's worth it. ....

I see why you said it is better just to take out the motor. We live and learn. It looks like my flywheel is the culprit. Now I am waiting to order another one. Boy they sure don't give those away do they? $350 from JD. ....
