My neighbor has a Kubota BX 2200 tractor and is experiencing the steering wheel turning with no change at the front end, it does this randomly while making a right hand turn. Under the steering wheel appears to be a hydraulic servo set up that powers a double ended cylinder to control the steering. What should I try first, any help is greatly appreciated.

The first thing I would check is the Hydraulic fluid. It may be low and when you turn it could be getting low enough that the servo is not getting enough fluid. I know whenever I have a problem with my Kubota my dealer always tries to help me over the phone before I take it in or they come out. ....

Typically true hydraulically controlled or powered steering (as opposed hydraulic assisted) consists of a rotary valve at the steering wheel which reacts to steering input when a twistable shaft inside the valve moves a cylindrical spool inside the valve. This principle is similar to the '70's-era Ford 4x4 pickup power steering, but no the same in design. Another modern example is a self-propelled mower or even a vacuum cleaner that moves when you push or pull the handle. When you stop it stops.

My somewhat larger tractor (new Holland TC33D hydrostat)has its own pump, filter and reservoir.

I'd be looking for a a plugged filter, low fluid level or even a pinched line.

There should be a process for pressure checking the system.

If the twistable rod (torque rod) inside the valve is bad, at least on my mid-size backhoe it cost me $700 for a rebuild. These units do wear out. ....
