I have a slight leak in the backhoe control valve. Have cleaned and watched for where the drip is coming from but can only narrow it down to 2 valve sections. Has anyone done their own control valve disassembly and repair? Seems like a job just to get the whole valve assembly out. This leak seems to occur more when I shut the system down rather than when I am using it. Sort of surprising. I am guessing it is in the relief valve or in the return line path.
Ideas, comments, look out fors all welcomed.

It is a process to pull the main block out of the bottom. It is dooable. I have had mine out and switched the boom and dipper blocks around to function the same as a excavator.
I spend a lot of time in the big machines and when I am in close work with the little JD hoe it was not instictive and I had to overconcentrate. Also do not just switch hoses because the blocks have different relief valves on the push/pull sides.
Put a number tag on each line and make a diagram of how they go.
Common tools will do the job but you will need a good quality set of open end wrenches for all the lines.
I have all the rebuild parts and photos and can fax or can send you links to the JD sites.
Just an after thought check all the lines first. A couple of mine were not tight but did not leak that I noticed. ....

Just wondered if your felt you needed caps or plugs to seal off the free hose ends and input connectors to the valve block while you removed and worked on it?

I streched out boom and dipper, also the stabilizers so everything was flat on the floor. Recheck every thing to make sure you do not have some stored energy somewhere in the system. Work "ALL" of the valves with tractor "NOT" running then un hook hoses from tractor.
Just used a small drain pan and speedy dry. Unhooking all the control linkages as I recall was the most difficult part. Can't remember why just seems like it was the headache. Maybe because of the sheet metal in the way.
Once you get the big plate off the back you have complete access. ....
