Am I the only one having rear axle problems? I had owned a 2000 4300HST. Under 10 hours it went back to the JD dealer. They had to tear it down to replace. Because this tractor was such a lemon for the 2 year warrenty period and with alot of bitch'n, JD offered me a better than average trade-in value for a new 2002 4310 E-Hydro model. Near the end of the 4310 warrenty period the rear axle unit on this tractor was also replaced. My tractors have always been garaged, babied, and well cared for. I really suppect the problem lys with in the axle lock. I have never applied axle lock under power conditions. I see the new twenty series advertising is boasting "engage on the fly". About 50 hours after the new axle assembly was installed in the 4310, I set the parking brake (latched petals). The tractor sat 3 days in this state. Now, the left brake petal shaft going into the axle assembly is stuck and must tap the linkage (underneath) to release the brake. Currently I no longer use this brake. I assume this will be another major task to repair. I truely believe JD's CUT should win overall design awards per attachments connections, but I question their engineering for durability. I purchased the 4300 expecting it to last me the remainder of my life, thus having to rid it. I now feel the same about the 4310. Mudder

There was a PIP for the older tractors in the differential. It replaced a bushing. I thought they had corrected the problem and design.

Never had or have heard about problems with the brakes. Mine has set 2 or more weeks at a time with park brake on.

If you have to tap to release it you might try some penetrating oil. Sounds like something is either gummed up or has some rust.

Excessive washing can remove the oils on the little parts. ....

I had the same problem with my 4310 and i replaced the spring ( about 2.00 at dealer ) and sprayed the shaft where it goes in side on rear axle with some wd40 or whatever you wish. When you spray the shaft you can tell that it is working better just keep working it before you install the spring. Mine has never gave another problem and i would bet that will fix yours. Much easier if you remover the rear wheel. If you look part up online it will not be shown on real axle but shown with the ROPS. Who knows why.....John Deere i guess. ....

Thanks for the insight! I'll give the penetrating oil a try. I pray this is the only problem. The brake worked fine before a 3 day sit, so it logically makes sense that it may have ceased in that position.

Harvey: I don't understand what PIP means?

White Turbo: I am at the JD parts www.site, currently I have not found the shaft/internals of the wet brakes. I can locate the linkage/petal ez enough. I'll keep searching..... I would like to mechanically see the arrangments of the brakes (and other parts and pieces within). If and when they wear, is there any internal adjustment?

I just located site, place in url link

My neighbor's 4310 (pretty sure) has had driveline problems too. Something snapped in the 4wd system going to the front axle a few months ago ($400 repair). Recently something else broke and now if he is under load and lets off the HST pedal to either reduce speed or stop-- it will keep going until the engine stalls when he applies the brakes. Another guy I know shattered the rear pinion and ring gear on his. ....

PIP is the JD Product Improvement Program. If they have a problem area, and a redsigned part will improve, they will replace the parts under the program even if yours are not broken, or out of warranty. However you have to be having a concern ie: there is an excessive amount of noise comming from the diferential on a downhill push in this gear but not in this one... ....

Again, thank everyone for the insight. I went to the JD parts break down web site. I could see the casing /shaft/ o-ring of the assembly. This afternoon I removed the left wheel and kept spraying pen-oil while tapping the rocker linkage-arm back & forth. BINGO! it now works as it should. Upon reassembly, I realized the JD dealer never put the rims/wheels at wide stance. I have the 48 backhoe and within the owners manual it states to put the wheels in the wide position. This explains why it was "so-tight" placing the backhoe hold pins in position. The tire lug "gaps" needed to be just right to achieve the extra distance where pins inserted. By reversing the rear rims I have gained about 1" extention at each wheel. I believe I will space the front wheels. Mudder ....
