Hello i have a question......I am having issues on a New Holland Boomer 40 steering. When the tractor is loaded heavy in the bucket or when driving thru mud when turning the steering wheel...... the steering wheel turns but the wheels will not. There is like a pulsing or ratcheting feeling coming thru the steering wheel when this happens. do you feel it could be the orbit steering valve?

Thank you!

Pulsing / ratcheting feel in the steering wheel when under load points toward an issue in the hydrostatic steering circuit. On your New Holland Boomer 40, the steering is full hydrostatic:

Steering wheel → orbitrol (orbit steering valve) → hydraulic cylinders at the front axle.

The key symptoms:

Steering wheel turns but wheels don’t move

Pulsing/ratcheting feedback through the wheel

Problem shows up under heavy load (bucket full, mud, etc.)

So the easiest would be air in th elines due to low fluid levels, if you are lucky. worst case Pump, worn steering piston seals, or as you suspect orbitrol --Internal check valves or rotor set worn/damaged.

To test what is ailing your machine you can perform the following test:

--Raise the front wheels off the ground (so there’s no steering load). If the steering works smoothly, but fails when the wheels are on the ground with load → orbitrol is almost certainly the issue.

--If you put a pressure gauge on the steering supply line, you should see full system pressure when you try to steer against resistance. If pressure won’t build, the orbitrol is bypassing internally. ....
