So here I am 11 years later at 69 years old. So after 34 years at IBM, I drove my tractor to help people for a year, did short stints as an appraiser, loading medical databases, working at Lowes in the garden center and now I am in my 8th year as a professor with 2 more years to go. My first wife passed away unexpectedly 5 years ago and now am remarried to a wonderful woman. My JD4310 tractor is at my son's house and I now have a NH workmaster 25s for just around the yard. Life is a wild roller coaster ride - you never know where you are going to end up.

Wishful, it is EGO 56v, not sure if 2 or 2.1. But I would not count on 20 cuts in a single charge, maybe 5-10 max.

Hello Handson, this job was done with small excavator with thumb to pick and place stones. Skidsteer to move soil. Yes, the unilock gets acid rain stained and doesn't look nearly as nice after a few years, although I was told I had good unilock with color throughout. An occasional powerwash would help :) You can see from rise off the soil that I would be much more comfortable with the large stones as opposed to the unilock.

When I bought the house in 2014 the unilock walls were beautiful. Then with the heaving of the soil over the winters it toppled after 4 years. The foundation was poured correctly for the unilock wall and the new stones are on top of that foundation. But there wasn't the correct drainage and stone behind the unilock walls. Hopefullly this new limestone wall will hold up.

Interesting, I see lots of metal roofs going up. Are there are downsides to metal? Are they loud in the rain? Can you get on the roof and walk as easily as on shingles? Up in the north I would worry about the snow sliding off even though I now there are metal "cups" you can add to prevent this?. Do they really last a lifetime?

Yooper(Hogslayer), I purchased one of your hitches and a "Bad River" hat. I remember you explaining to me the meaning of "Bad River". I still have that hat and remember your story about Bad River every time I wear it.

Art, I was amazed to see the large tractors they use here in Niagara County. It seems there are just a few owners of these tractors and they share them among farms, or one farm leases several other farms. And every self-respecting man up here seems to have a pickup and a small tractor for personal use :)

I tripped across this site in 2003 when I had bought a 2003 JD 4310 and realized the benefit I would get from joining the site. I did not realize how much fun I would have with the great political and personal discussions that we all had. I definitely miss those days.

I grew up in a small apple farming community in the Hudson Valley, NY. There were small farms that ranged from 20 to 500 acres in size. My father was a farmer when I was less than 5 years old but sold the farm and went to work for the electric company. If I wanted to play I had to work on my friends farms until they were done for the day.

I remember selecting from allis chalmers, the little ford, massey harris, john deere, case, international, kubota(early years) and other types of tractors when going to load up boxes of apples. So whenever I see a tractor it takes me back to my youth and fond memories.

Hello all, thanks for the replies! I was glad to hear from Hardwood in the other "Just for Fun" thread, I think of you and your farm often, hang in there. I am still at NIagara University teaching in my 5th year, lucky to still have job. The University had a ransomware attack earlier this year which shut us down for a couple of days followed by the COVID fiasco. I was used to working online due to my days at IBM so the adjustment required some work but I already had much of my courses online.<br>

Life has been good to me, I feel rejuvenated working around the house to accomplish things for my wife. I got tired of having to "borrow" my 4310 back from my son, so a couple of months ago I bought a New Holland Workmaster 25S with a backhoe which is perfect for me in my 1 acre lawn. It isn't the cadillac that the 4310 was but it's like heaven being able to just hear that little diesel come alive when I need it (which has been quite often lately). <br>

I went to Farm Days in Seneca Falls for the first time last year. It was pouring rain but I managed to find Art White's booth. Unfortunately Art wasn't there but I did ask about him. Murf, Denis - sorry I didn't respond to your comments in 2019 - I commit to checking TP more often. Ken, thanks for thinking about the old gang! I am 20 miles east of Niagara Falls, 10 miles south of Lake Ontario. There are lots of wineries here, 2 within walking distance. Arrow Head Spring Winery has some decent wine. Let me know if you are ever in the area. -Joe

Its possible you ripped some wires out in the high grass. That happened to me once and caused me to lose drive to my front wheels.

Hello Dennis, yes I signed up for this job because it provided reasonable hours, health insurance and just enough salary to get me by. However, as you get into any job, you find they have extra projects on the side, etc etc that they would like you to do as well!

I am working a couple of extra hours a day and it is difficult to keep up with these youngsters. It is as though the keyboard is part of their body. But for the most part weekends and nights are free.

Hello KT, I wold love to have one but there is no good location on my property. Maybe in the future. My wife and I are considering a move to Buffalo, NY to be near son, DIL and granddaughter. They seem to have quite a few homes with metal buildings on the grounds up there. My kind of place! However the number of homes with out-buildings on the property may have more to do with the snow fall :(.

Thanks for the update. I am finding all kinds of little things that go wrong after 11 years of tractor use and 1100 hours. My lift arm lost a pin this year while using the brushhog. I used a bolt to temporarily replace the pin until I could order the correct replacement. I believe the root cause was the small hitch pin that secures the larger pin in place gets bent and out of alignment over time and slips out. So I replaced that also.

KT, I have an older craftsman string trimmer on wheels that is not self propelled and is hand start. My wife actually prefers to use it on occasion and it can handle some thick weeds. I switch back and forth with my regular echo string trimmer without wheels. Not sure I have a preference.

I just joined the Pats Quick Hitch bandwagon. Works nicely on my debris blower and rake. I am waiting to see how it works on my 925lb 3pt snowblower. Will update this post when I try it out.

Hello Dennis, yes I set up an LLC and get an occasional job. Tax writeoffs are good. I should have done this years ago. Most interesting job was last year when I drove my tractor into a city basement and dug the floor down 3 feet for some masons. Very tight working conditions!

I overlooked the weight box as the worst attachment. The dealer threw that in for free and I have never used it. It will make good weight for a trip to the metal recycle place.

KT, I guess should have done the research before I bought the tiller :). One of the reasons I bought it was to be able to say I can supply rototilling to round out my services. But I guess there are not that many people who need new gardens that are 1/4 acre to 2 acres in size. Larger fields belong to farmers who plow their fields.

I do have a friend who who works with estate gardens. But they are always established gardens. One other use for the tiller would be to smooth out and replant lawns. Hmmm, food for thought.
