I agree with the last post about loaders/weight---however not all hyd. cylinders that are loaded will manually operate through the control valves when the machine is shut down. My big Case chain-trencher boom arm will not lower unless the engine is running. And newer equipment that has solenoid piloted valves require that (engine and/or battery) power be on also. In most cases as long as the equipment off and lowered down so nothing has motion that can occur and casue damage or injury (hydrostatic transmissions should have the wheels chocked to prevent rolling), just simply cracking open a line fitting will do the job--use care and safety not to get too close to the oil spray which can injure your eye or cut your flesh.

I'm with Art--I used to operate backhoes in the winter to move snow. Even with a factory cab and heater on full blast the windows frost up just from your breath or normal perspiration.
After about an hour being in the cold I found it just as effective to get acclimated to the cold and leave a window or door open to prevent steam buildup---once it hits the cold window you get ice.

Don't know about the rest of the country, but here in Michigan we get Ford A-Plan Employee Discount just like car or truck. I believe the dealer said he gets 6% back on the sale (I saved $3,200 off list). With A-Plan you get to see the dealer cost and buy it at that price. Since I was dealing with the actual owner of the dealership he also let me buy a LS180 skidloader at an "unoffical A-Plan discount" with a savings of about $6800. Ford A-Plan says discounts only apply to "blue" Ag equipment and implements over $1000, nothing "yellow" which is "construction"---but dealers set their own prices anyway.

Not sure if your 18 is anything like my TC33D, but the service manual shows a "HST return-to-neutral spring" that has both rough and fine adjustment. It looks like a shock absorber, but actually has a spring inside a tube connected to a rod. If creeping is the problem, turning a nut a few times for fine adjustment may do the trick.

Lapinfarmer, how is life with your B7800? Have you discovered its limits, or does it have more muscle than you need? Do you have a FEL? Do any heavy work with it?

The heat is different from what you are use to in the older machines, i.e., turn the key, etc., and heat the plugs. The newer design is direct heat, much great and occurs at the point of start. The only way I know of overriding this and has been recommended by many JD techs is to simply put the machine in High or Low range or pull the PTO and try to start. When you turn the key and within a few second you will hear a click, that was the heat glow from the plug and it will "pre-warm" the cylinder and make for a quick start when you return the machine to neutral or push the PTO back in and allow it to start correctly. I do this routinely in cold weather.

All good advice and appreciated. Some comes too late, but became pretty obvious as I was working the ground. Too wet is definitely a bad thing, but I had hoped to get some seed for a fall cover crop in, rather than waiting until next spring to plant.

Probably got away with a few too-sharp turns with the plow in the dirt, but since at that time is was damp but not soggy, the plow cut through with the greatest of ease. However, I definitely compacted down some areas driving over when disking. I may reploy that section but not worry about disking and planting that part this fall.

Besides taking a beating thus far with no parts falling off, there are two handy things about the TC45 that I like. The 3 pt arms have spring-loaded extension for helping with hookup that are pretty handy and having the gas filler cap on the back of the tractor makes refilling from cans alot easier than having to get on the deck and fill over the engine area like on some others I've used.

I'm grateful for all of the good input and only wish I'd posted sooner, but since I had the plow in the ground w/in 1/2 hour of getting the tractor, I didn't have the chance!

Be sure to check the air cleaner also. I've had the radiator block off while tilling. Be careful with the pressure washer and stay straight on with the fins. I've managed to fold a few over when hitting them from the sides, but they did comb out with out breaking.

The symptoms you outline are suggestive of the clutch being stuck to the pressure plate. You need to have a look in the clutch housing to see what the problem is. It could be caused by a number of things. It is normal however for there to be some grinding if you attempt to shift too soon after depressing the clutch. The gears need a few seconds to slow down on most gear shift tractors.

PSIMONSON has it right. But I find the opposite--usually when I shut the tractor off it's still in gear. So, I just hop on the seat--hold the key on start for 5-10 sec's.....put it in neutral and start it right up. Just my procedure.

Go for the new machine. That way you know how it was treated. Those first 50 hours are very critical and if someone abused a machine during that time, it could have a significant impact down the road. I would go with a MMM or rear finish mower for the 7610. If you buy a nice machine like that you want to spend time mowing on it. The seats on these machines are more comfortable than on cheap riders plus the cut is awesome.

If the slope isn't too steep and the grading isn't bad a BX2230 w/ box blade would be perfect. If more heavy-duty grading is needed a B7800 with more weight and power might be better. The BX machines are surprisingly capable for their size. Engine power really isn't a problem, but the tradeoff is weight.
