Riosman,
I have my tractor insured with State Farm. My homeowners will cover the tractor while on my property. However, it will not cover the tractor during transit or on another's property.

I got a commercial "Inland Marine" policy for mobile equipment to cover my tractor in all situations, with a $500 deductible.

I've heard the Blackhawk brand name for quite a few things, but don't know of a Blackhawk Backhoe Co. Waterloo Iowa is in Blackhawk county, and Waterloo being quite an industrual city it's possible that they could have been made there as there are quite a few companys in Waterloo called Blackhawk this or that. Perhaps a call to the Waterloo chamber of commerce would get you somewhere. Hopefully someone on the board will know the company you're loking for, but if not this might be a place to start. I just purchased a JD 4700 4wd with a 460 FEL, 370 hrs and power reverse. Can anyone give me the low down on a 4700? <br>
Gave 17500 - hope that wasn't too much.<br>
It seems to do great so far, a lot better than my Ford 1910 4wd.<br>
Thanks in advance for any info on this tractor/loader.

Cheif is correct, they are different size engines. I too noticed the displacement figures is some past Deere ad literature, but my 4000 series tech manual gives the correct numbers. Frank.

sounds like your building one new wall? If so, you will need the 3,4,5, method. Starting in a corner, measure 3' one way down the wall, mark it. Back to the corner, measure 4'
down the other wall,mark it. The distance between the mark's should be 5'. not 5' 1/8 th. You can multiply this out depending on the length of the wall,example. 3,4,5, 6,8,10, etc.
This with the offset line and plumb bob previously mentioned
should get you right on the money. The diaganol method will work if you have a sq. to measure. I use all three when I'm
able.

I recently had a large springfed pond cleaned out and deepened form 12' to 30'.

The pond was 570'x 900' the contractor that did it brought in a cat and pushed a dirt berm out so that his excavator could reach where he needed.

it only took 6 berms to complete the job but it took almost a year for the water to clear again.

But if you have it done this way don't forget to bring a large checkbook

Great ideas. I was gone with family for the weekend so still haven't tried anything yet with my logs. Chief, I checked out the choker cables that you suggested and was impressed with the idea and by how inexpensive they are (cheaper than the chain I just bought at Lowes), so I ordered a couple. I browsed for more info on the skidplate kit you suggested and it appears that it is "obsolete", whatever that means. I will check with my dealer tomorrow, but I'm a little hesitant to lay out that kind of money. I'm hoping that if I clear carefully and take it slow that I won't need it. Dave's message was encouraging in this regard.<br>

Yooperpete, good idea about the 4x4 pt wedge to get the log up enough to get the chain under. Anybody ever used a cant hook? I saw them on the same website that Chief gave me for the choker cables. Looks pretty handy for rolling logs and I think you could roll the log on to the chain. More expensive than a 4x4 though. Speaking of handy but expensive, check out the grapple implement at the website listed below. My wife put her foot down when she got a look at this. Guess I'll be working with chains and cables.<br>

Be real careful. There is enough pressure in those lines to inject oil under your skin or take out an eye.

Drop the backhoe to the deck, shut off the engine and then move all the controls in every direction several times to relieve the pressure in the lines and let everything come down to rest.

Then, and only then, carefully move the tubing back to its original position. If you see a kink or a crease form in the tube, your machine is out of service. You will need to order a new part or have a replacement fabricated at a professional hydraulics shop.

If everything looks OK, start it up and watch from a safe distance for leaks. Do not use you hands to check for leaks... use a piece of cardboard like it shows in your owners manual.

What I saw the Ventrac with dual wheels do, I would not attempt with any sub-compact or compact tractor. It slid sideways a few times, but showed no sign of tipping. It also has a slope degree indicator as an accessory.

Nothing on an FEL happens by gravity except the "float" setting, unless it is painted green and then it floats when you don't want it to.

My understanding is this: the two stage dump is a powered setting and just runs a bit faster in the second stage.

Kubota uses this faster, power-down setting to drop the grader blade faster. I never noticed that it made much difference when using the FEL.

For towing my L3830 I bought an old beat-up '75 1-ton flat-bed 350 chevy dualie for $800, put some wheels & tires on it, rebuilt the 4bbl, and the granny gear pulls the steepest hill. It's not pretty, no AC or radio and the driver door doesn't quite close, but I suspect no one will try to steal it. As a bonus, I use the 12' bed far more than ever I imagined hauling lumber, fence panels, etc.

Nothing like posting to old threads but, first I'd like to say I have a BH90 bachoe & it blows my mind how strong it is! I have pushed & pulled myself around, Lifted the rear end up & moved the whole rear of the tractor over 5' - 6'. As I discovered when owning a deere, There is a lemon in every batch & I left deere for the same reason chief left the " other" Board......Arrogance! The one difference is as JLHall mentioned, Deere corp gave me the arogance, You rec'd the arrogance from a moderator. I can speak first hand that is can be difficult to find good Help! With that said, Maybe the Owner of the "other " board will realize what is going on before it's to late.

I didn't measure the slope, but it was more than I would have expected. Slopes scare me more than a little bit so I am very conservative.

Aside: Be aware that there are things you can do with the tractor can suddenly make the tractor roll over even on a "reasonable" slope, so the slope itself isn't everything. Things like dropping a downslope wheel into a depression, running over a stick/stump/rock/hump with a upslope wheel, having soil suddenly give way, lifting or lowering the loader bucket while applying force to just once side, lifting a load high in the bucket, sliding on wet or loose ground, catching or bumping some part of the tractor on a tree, etc. Be way careful. Always have the ROPS in place and locked, wear the seatbelt even in the parking lot, use wheel weights or filled tires, space the wheels out as far as practical, go real slow. And even going straight up/down a slope can be bad if you have a big load or traction problems. For example, I was drive straight up a slope this weekend in 4wd (pulling some dirt with the yard box) when the front wheels lost traction, the front end started moving sideways, and the slope was suddenly more sideways than I intended.

You can measure the slope visually with a protractor and stick or piece of cardboard/paper, or use a hand-held or tractor-mounted inclinometer. But that still doesn't tell you the angle it will roll over, even in perfect conditions and perfect traction. For my lawn mower I picked one side up to get a feel for the angle it would take, but I wouldn't try that with my tractor even if I had the means to lift it. Be way careful.

(PS: I may be more conservative than some, but when I got my tractor I read everything I could find about how people have died on a tractor and tried to learn as much as possible from them. For example, even driving through the woods can be a big hazard if you bump a tree and disloge a "widowmaker" over your head, or if you turn around and a wimpy little sapling you knocked over on the way in snakes up the frame and impails you through the groin - I read about that one in a wood-harvesting book. Another one: my neighbor's grandfather was killed when wasps began stinging him and in his panic he jumped off the tractor and got caught under the wheel - now I bushhog in the summer with long sleves, hat, and netting)

It sounds like the bolt that secures the drive gear onto the hydro motor is broken. It allows the gear to slide off, especially in reverse. Chances are, a 50 cent bolt is causing your problem. The problem is, the labor involved with fixing it is time consuming. The worst part is finding the broken bolt and washer to be sure they aren't floating around in the transmission to cause more damage later. The hydro will need to be removed to replace the bolt. If you are lucky, the broken bolt and washer can be fished out of the tranny with a flexible magnet. Good luck!

I have a mid 1970's IH 2400b series with the auto trans, the flywheel is bad and I have already split the tractor. It appears to have a harmonic balancer but I do not know how to remove it to get to the flywheel bolts. Help, I use the tractor to load my concrete truck and I am not working. <br>

I take my Fleetguard filter to the oil change place and have them do it. I too have a problem getting rid of the 12+ quarts from my Cummins. I wind up paying about $35-40 for them to do the change every 5,000 miles. I have used 5w40 or 15w40 Rotella in it since new. 175k and counting.

A press is the best way to get the bearings off. Most tractor shop will have some sort of press to assist you. You will also want to press the new bearings into place.

I suggest that you mount your lights on the inside of the ROPS so they won't get knocked off. I easily mounted mine using a couple of U clamps. (see Pix) I also made them tilt and swivel so that I can have light in front and behind me if I want. I put mine on before I added the sunshade or else I could have used the mounting clamps for the shade to hold the lights. Make sure all of your wiring connections are super secure or else the lurching and vibrations will buzz them apart.

When starting my Kioti LK3054 the starter motor whizzes, but does not engage. The battery is new and fully charged. If I click the switch until it sounds like it is engaging, then pull the decompression lever and try again, it occasionally starts. Do you think I need just the magnet switch (solenoid) or the entire starter/magnet switch. Can you tell me what the prices are?<br>
Also, how much does the starter (key) switch cost. Mine is getting very "loose".<br>
