We have a farm in SW Oklahoma and intend to reclaim several hundred acres that have been infested with mesquite for many years, litterally thousands of them. They range from an inch to 10" in diameter and many of them are very bushy with lots of limbs and wide crotches. There is some interest in the wood - mulch, bedding and so on - and we're looking into selling it. The thing is, each use needs a different size chip.<br>

We've cleared a small test plot and chipped (shredded is more like it) the trees with a rented Vermeer that was truely ancient. We won't be doing that again: too small, too slow, poor quality chips.<br>

I've been researching and am baffled by the options. Bigger seems to mean less trimming, PTO seems to mean more power/speed with less cost. I'm thinking a 10 inch, PTO powered chipper is the ticket, and have found one that allows for the chip size to be adjusted: Hud-son CH260.<br>

Being a family farm, we have tractors, trucks, and trailers but little cash. The Hud-son goes for 12K plus...my dad almost fainted. Is that chipper over-kill for what we're trying to do? Are there better choices or problems I've overlooked?<br>

Thanks for the part numbers. I already remounted the SMV sign, so that renders those body panels moot, for me anyway. I won't need them unless I decide to do a cab on the machine.

I think that I've gone as far as I need to in taking the 7800 towards 2910-ness. The headlights are much nicer even without the halogens, so I'm now a happy camper. I ditched the wire toplink hanger, because I have dedicated toplinks for each implement that I just leave attached to them. It's nice to be able to back up with the Pat's system and hook up from the seat- and there's no dangling toplink bouncing around back there when there's nothing on the hitch...

I would like to offer to points to consider.

First, generally you only use a MMM on nice, finished lawns, that is the LAST place you would want to put a CUT equipped with R1's, especially if they are on all 4 wheels.

Secondly, if your going to be in mud, snow, or other deep 'goo' you really should drop the MMM, it is just a big, very expensive, anchor down there.

If you are going to do this type of work very often you really should have 2 sets of tires and rims, one for the genteel work and some serious grippers.

I had a similar problem with several of our machines in Eastern Ontario the last few weeks cleaning up after all the flooding from the remnants of the hurricane going through, areas that had been solid ground just turned into duck poo from all the water in the ground.

BTW, if you're talking Canadian dollars that's not too bad for a set of 4 rims & tires.

i all i am a new member very nice webb site . i just bought a used tc 30 very nice 71 hours my best friend dad bought it new last year. what i would like to no is what kind of loader to buy. i have 6 horses 15 acers of land lots of hills.i am going to be move some dirt clean the barn. clean the drive way gravel an move some snow in the winter. this is my 1st tractor . i am learning. had my tc 30 3 weeks now so far so good. tks jim in ohio

I'm new with a box scraper (JD 970 tractor) and am considering the same sort of problem...I always seem to have the scraper set so high that nothing happens or so low it gouges. The reason I'm doing this is to remove high spots in the drive so putting in low spots is counter-productive.<br>

After considering it, the draft link speed control doesn't seem like it would help as it only speeds or slows the response of the lift, not the incremental changes.<br>

It seems like the only mechanical help would be a top and tilt kit. The other alternatives are just to keep practicing or a full blown grader....my personal choice.<g> I wonder if I could give it to my wife for Christmas.<g!><br>

The traditional way of filling Moose Pasture is the 'causeway theory', start filling as soon as it gets soft and keep pushing it out into the muck with a blade, then back out on top of the fill and tip over the edge.

We have filled some pretty soupy areas with loaded tandems and tri-axles doing it this way. It takes surpirisingly little to support a loaded truck because of the 'snowshoe' effect.

I can COMPLETELY relate to the 'dog's life', it is the same at our house, his nibs (see my pic. # 7) will allow my wife to share HIS stool in front of the fireplace, as long as she doesn't get too pushy. She gets the first few inches at the side, IF he's in a good mood.

Kubota's have the brakes and speed pedals on the same (right) side, but they are harder to use.

Deere has the brakes on the left side, but I am thinking it would be fairly simple to rig up a hand lever to the brake pedal so you could operate the brakes with your left hand. This would leave you right hand free to set the parking brake lock, etc.

The brakes on my 4115 do not require much pressure to engage. I can stand beside the tractor and easily press the brake pedal with my left hand and set the lock with the other hand.

PVC or ABS pipe works better, then you can cement one end shut and put a screw cap on the top. Besdies, it's much stronger.

Thanks for the reply. If book value on the 3054 is that low then maybe this is not such a great deal. This really is a 3504, (35 hp) the model was discontinued in early 2000's I believe. Do you have any idea what the book value is on it ?

Several companies, including JD themselves, offer or have offered, kits to allow the use of a rear blower on the front of a tractor.

Any decent machine shop can also easily fabricate a driveline to power a blower from the rear PTO. It is just a frame rail that holds a driveshaft and the reversing pulleys and belt or chain, it usually bolts to the drawbar, leaving the lift arms to operate the front lift via a cable system, or to hold a blade if it is hydraulically lifted.

There is a disproportionate cost difference between a 200 rpm front blower and a 540 rpm rear blower, usually WAY more than the cost of a conversion kit.

Use wheel weights if necessary. Having the extra weight from filled tires when you don't need or want it can be a problem at times. The advantage to wheel weights, or even filled tires, over ballasting is the reduced wear on the rear wheel bearings and axle housing seals. You will also notice that the wheel weights increase the stability of the tractor.

The amount of ballasting required should be covered in the operators manual for the tractor. If you do have the tires filled, stay away from Calcium Chloride. It is nasty on the rims. There are several products out there that are safe for the rims.

Thanks for the help. Worked the loader this weekend moving sand, worked great. 3pt would sometimes "jerk" up & down while using the tractor, but mostly just not move. I will try locating the hyd. filter tonight. Looked for the screen, no luck.

With the low hours and the trailer which I didn't figure into the equasion you might want to be a little higher if it is a good trailer as they will run 3000 on there own. Might nbe better to think around 18,000 for a quick sale.

Foam is more costly and is used in areas that are noted for many punctures. It doesn't weigh up like the calcium or even rim-guard. It does give rougher rides as Tom suggested and there is a loss of traction do to the rigidity of the tire on rough ground.

I don't know of any upgrade for the 750 hydraulics. It has a 9cc displacement pump. The 850 had a 9cc pump also and it had an upgrade available to 11cc. It's possible that this could be altered to fit but I don't know. Like I've always said, if you have enough time and money, you can make anything work. A larger pump wont lift any more weight, it will only do it faster. I'm not sure of the lift capacity on the loader but 750 lbs is probably near the limit, especially if you want to handle that weight up high. 1400 hours should not be a concern if it has had reasonable care. Ive seen these engines go 8000-10000 hours before overhaul with good maintenance. $9000.00 might be a little on the high side ut if tractor and all attachments are in very good to excellent shape it is probably in line.
