Gerald, The bulk of the ground around around this area is gravel or clay, so I would think that this would be harder to work than your ground. For what you are telling me I would think that your ground might be a little tighter than what you think it is. If the ground hasn't been worked since this spring you might have enough compaction that you virtually have to start over. Do you have the owners manual? I'm another vote for getiing a finishing mower. I've got 3 acres and use a JD755 for my tractor chores and a JD425 for my mowing chores.Your property layout can be a factor, but on most situations the tractor will not be able to get in all the areas you need cut, the lawn tractor will. I'm a firm believer in the right tool for the job, and it sounds to me you need two tools to do the jobs you need done.

I own an '87 850 mfwd. Excellent tractor. Gear Drive. 4 fw speed 1 reverse. Hi/lo range on transmission. I have a bush hog loader operating on the tractor hydraulics and it works fine. Also have a Kelley 650 backhoe (Kelleys smallest) with a PTO hydraulic pump. The tractor handles it with no problem. HP is in the 20-24 range.<br>I use it for just about all tasks around our small horse farm and it does just fine.

I was told but I have not verified that it is a good practice. That in below zero (F) conditions 5% gas mixture is best. I have been told this by quite a few permafrost workers and do not have a clue as to what the trade offs are or if it is safe for compacts.<br>mario

Mike, I had never thought of the difference in tires that way. Thanks for the comment.....I don't have much grass to mow, but some hills on my land are slick with either sand or with pine needles. Going up or down those it doesn't matter what tires I have, the tractor can loose traction. <br> As for that

I don't know when JD stopped making telescoping links as standard equipment. My 1958 model has them and I think they are great! They would not be difficult to make, and would be the perfect item for someone to offer from a home/shop business. Anyone interested? <br> Roger

Don't waste time cleaning pipe. The pipe will last longer than you or I if you don't do anything. If it needs to look nice, get a 4 inch or 4 1/2 inch angle grinder and put on a quality twisted-wire wheel and remove any obvious loose dirt/scales and prime with Rustoleum red oxide. Then put on you desired finish color. Now it will really last a very long time. If you absolutely need to have clean steel and you have spare cash, hire some high school kids or go to your local job service and hire someone for a few days to do it for you. Good luck...

The JD order number is BW14677. The JD Sales Manual shows an incorrect photograph, but the information is correct. The complete blade is shown in the Parts Catalog for JD 420, 430, and 460 Loaders. It connects easily using the quick-tach points. It is 6 feet wide and is manually angled.

Has anyone purchased equipment from or used a Maine Kobota dealer? I was at one Saturday (Wescott & Sons Inc) and they seem to have a large Kobota inventory. It would be nice to know of others who have done business with this dealer or any other dealer in Maine. You guessed it live in Maine. I have the wood stove going already!

Rick, I suspect you're right. I just wonder why the manuals on both say to use the clutch (no mention of whether you are moving or not). I always have used the clutch, but still don't shift ranges without stopping.

Spoke with my local JD salesman who informed me that he had just returned from a JD seminar on their compact series tractors. He said that they admitted there was a problem with the front tires tearing up turf, and that they had redesigned a new front axle that eliminated the problem. The new axles will be on the new tractors, and he said they will be taking care of those customers who have been experiencing the turf tearing. Hope this comes as good news to all you who have been dealing with this. Check with your dealer for further info. Note: My salesman just returned from this meeting, so the info is new -- there is a chance not all dealers are aware of this yet.
