Even if you are only going to do it once, making a rolling support for the tractor to be split on can make the job a lot easier and safer.

Basically you want a stout stand to support the back half in place, then a small track on which another stout stand holds the front end up, pipe works nicely for all of it. When the tractor is unbolted, just roll the front section forward, swap the clutch and roll them back together again.

Be sure to get the alignment and adjustments correct too or you may be replacing it again real soon.

The other option is to have different means of access for different things.

If you look at my picture # 1 you will see that I have several different ways of accessing the house and/or the shop. If I have to get something big into the yard out back, or to the shop, I can, as the picture shows, bring a tractor trailer in from the right side at the rear, this is a dirt driveway in from a dead-end side street (see pic. # 10). That way I don't have to worry about destroying the driveway or landscaping out front where the boss can see it. It also allows me to have a narrow 'cars only' driveway with overhanging trees, etc., without having to be concerned about clearance for my bigger 'toys'. Mulitiple entrances and/or large turning circles also means I can turn a long rig like my float (top right corner of pic. # 1) around by just making a circle around my shop. Depending on which way I start the circle I can even vary which way it ends up facing at a certain place.

A little planning of things like that can make a HUGE difference later on.

I also buried all utilities from the street all the way in, including the 100 amp. service to the shop.

Even if you don't have a corner lot, or don't want a circular driveway, you can often arrange things such that you have a second driveway along the far side of the property where it is at least far less conspicous.

If you planned a 'construction entrance' correctly in the first place it could work out and serve you later as a seperate driveway to a shop out back. This is nice in that it leaves more room behind the house for 'backyard' space.

From my backyard you have to look very carefully to see anything but grass & trees, and the boss likes it that way, LOL. The trees and landscaping conceal almost everything from view if you are looking out a back window or from the deck, or patio by the pool.

Terrain can often be utilized to conceal or disguise a lot too.

The Deere 272 RFM is on the pricey side but one sweet RFM. Made from 7 gauge steel stamping and built like a tank. Gives a real nice cut as well.

Drove past the Boomer dealer today and saw they had a TZ24 on the lot. Nice little machine (it has a tach!!!!).

I looked in their showroom for a top link and they had a "cat 1" which was 16" center to center.(12" body) My OEM is 14" center to center.(10" body?) This is what they recomended, at $18 for the TZ.

Can the main body of one of these be shortened 2"? Will the eyes normally be able to thread all the way out (mine won't)?

It's been a few years since I've shopped too, but even in 98 the cigarette lighter was optional on some vehicles but a "power port" was standard. I don't smoke and won't miss the lighter but ash trays are/were convenient for small items.

JD855inWI, sorry about that! I should have mentioned that as well. Very good point to bear in mind. DO NOT forget about the safety chain if you plan to raise the 3 pt. hitch. Depending upon the strength of the chain; it could posibly bend the draw bar or worse. That is why I switched to the plastic coated cable which I doubled and secured together with threaded cable clamps. I am an expert on CRS and I just knew that one day I would forget about the chain and tear something up. Kinda like I did with the ROPS. ;O) My thinking with this cable set up is that it is strong enough to hold the hitch down under the load of the trailer pulling it up but weak enough to slip if I have a CRS brain fart and forget and raise the hitch under hydraulic pressue. I realize this is not the best of configurations but it is the best I could come up with. I am ALWAYS open to a new idea if anyone has a better solution. Some folks just think outside the box better than others. ;O)

I live in Michigan, so it would appear that your growing season is longer than ours. It can be done in Michigan as well. So,you should have ample time to do it. Spraying it will only take a couple of hours while you should be able to till, level and seed in one weekend. Fall is a good time to plant grass.

What size of blade will a machine handle is not the question. It should be more properly stated as 'what amount of LOAD will it handle'?

A 5' blade will be two entirely different animals if you are talking about spreading gravel or plowing snow.

IMHO, I would say that machine will handle a 5' blade in light snow, wet heavy stuff might be a challenge.

The weight of the blade itself should not be a problem, if you don't have an FEL on the tractor I'm sure you will want some front counter-weights though.

Tom, this posting is a little old so you may not see the reply, but I have translations for all of the decals on my 1840. They include a matintenance schedule, lever operating instructions, the seven lube sumps/capacities/type of lube, etc. If you want it let me know and I'll email a copy in MS word. The word document is pretty big since it has both a picture of each decal as well as the translation.

Rick, I just did the same thing. Northern tool (formerly Northern hydraulics) sells the Prince PTO pump for $350. I also ended up getting a 10 gal tank and inline filter and suction strainer there for another $110. They are not the cheapest place but they have a store right in town and the difference was not that much. I still need about 6' of pressure line and about the same return line distance.

Some of the grey market tractors run their PTOs at 1000 rpm. They make one for that speed also.

My father-in-law has a 1925 with a 5 foot medium duty brush cutter. Sorry I don't remember the brand name. I have spent many many hours clearing brush with it. The tractor handles it just fine as far as the weight and the horsepower requirements.

I was in Grove and Jay the other day. It is a pretty spot and growing... The main road going to Holiday Island is under big construction! I think there are plenty of low cost nice hotels around there. Compared to most places in the US it is very affordable. On Airports you forgot to mention XNA which is Northwest Arkansas. It is also about 50 miles away from Grove. Is there still plenty of lake front property there for sale? There is a place near me called Bella Vista that was a retirement area and now the lake lots are $80K for anything with a view. OUCH!

Is the ring in front of the wiper seal? I see something there, but it looks like cast iron and I assumed it was the top of the cylinder head that the big nut screwed onto. The wiper seal seems to go in behind it. I took a photo, but at the moment I don't have anywhere to post it.

I am considering buying a GC2300 with FEL or a JD 2210 with FEL. When I tried a GC2300 with 2350 loader, the loader would not raise & dump at the same time. Is this normal, or was it because tractor was at low/idle RPM/<br>
JD say their 2210 FEL will raise & dump simultaneously.<br>

Any good quality 15W-40 diesel rated oil will work just fine in your 2210. Deere recomends the 15W-40 Plus 50 synthetic blend which is what I use. They also make a 0W-40 Plus 50 synthetic. The most popular and price minded oil seems to be the Shell Rotella T 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic which is sold at Walmart. Either will work just fine.

Your engine is shipped to the dealer with break-in oil in the engine already. I would recommend that you leave this oil in the engine for the full 50 hours and then make the change when you do your 50 hour break-in service. Pulling the engine oil change a little early probably will not hurt things but changing it too early runs the risk of not properly seating in the piston rings and other wear components of the engine which could cause other issues down the road.

Have a possible clutch problem with a 1997/98 570 with 450 hours. Was moving a round bale of hay today and as I started to climb a very slight incline, the tractor stopped pulling. I have not noticed any slippage or anything out of the ordinary in the past. A very very slight amount of torque can be noticed and a very slight slipping noise can be heard when the clutch is released. I did not smell anything like hot asbestos that could indicate slippage. The tractor goes into and out of gear normally. Anyone had a similar experience and what is the best method to isolate the problem. I know that clutch replacement would be very expensive and I do not want to pay to have the machine picked up and a clutch replaced until I am sure that is the problem.<br>
Any advice and suggestions appreciated.<br>
