StephenR; The basic design of a hydro unit is still the same today as it was in the old Farmalls. A variable displacement radial pump powered direct from the flywheel pushes fluid into a fixed displacement radial motor. the way the flow rate is changed in the pump is by changing the angle of what is known as the swash plate. the ends of the pistons in the pump ride aganst the variable angle swash plate that is controled by your foot on the hydro pedal.
When the angle of the swash plate is 90 degrees from the axis of the pump the pistons do not move in the bore so no fluid is pumped, you're in neutral. As you push the pedal the angle of the plate increases allowing the pistons to take a longer strokes thus increasing the displacement of the pump pushing more and more fluid into the hydro motor making the fixed dispacemrnt motor spin faster, as the hydro motor spins faster thus the tractor goes faster, for reverse the plate simply angles the other direction. The Fend Co. I think from Italy started producing big farm tractors several years ago with infinitely variable speed transmissons that aren't totaly hydrostacic. In the latest 7000 series Deere now offers an IVT. This system does have a true mechanical connection, but hydro motors are used in it to control the speed of the planataries.I've studied the Deere tech manual and do understand how it works but I won't get into all that right now. In theory it really is a pretty simple system that takes a lot of the ineffeciencys of a true hydro drive out of the picture. Frank.

AnnBrush - you are a statistician in the feed industry? I worked with a lot of Penn State professors (got my MS at PSU) who optimized feed mix using LP simplex algorithm. I since have worked in industrial statistics at IBM and have PhD in applied stats. I use a few tricks here and there (Monte Carlo) to get a handle on things (and impress people) -I estimate future future penetration, demand, etc. But it is forecasting - much like weather forecasting - often inaccurate and can be done equally well with your thumb in the air - but makes nice charts for lots of people. What is the extent of your involvement in statistics?

Yes, that was cash, no credit card allowed. Included fluid in rear tires and a front grill protector. Tires were ind. type. I had to go back twice.

What are you mowing thats 2.5 inches in diameter? Small saplings, trees, etc? I only want to do pasture grass, weeds, stuff like that. Roadsides maybe, open space, smaller things.

Are you using a 10w-30 engine oil since ALL Kohler command engines use hydraulic lifters. Straight weight oils can prevent the lifters from pumping up properly and cause all kinds of running problems. Kohler markets an excellent oil for their engines.
Has this engine do it since day one or did it start after an oil change?

hello prospective tractor buyer,
what an exciting time for you. i faced the same decision last year.
my choices boiled down to the tc29d or tc33d. the 30 was ruled out after 5 minutes. it was a personal thing, i just didn't think it was a much machine as the other two.
i ended up getting a tc33d (last years's model, naturally)w/FEL, hydro, ss, & backhoe. i figured since they both weighed the same, it'd be worth the xtra $$ for the xtra horses.
super steer was kind of a "semi-accident", but i'm Very glad i got it & the hydro. it handles like a dream. when i take the backhoe off & put the boxblade on, it'll go in places you never would have believed.
i've never had it back in for service, but, if i ever do, i'll have the fel checked - lift capacity seems kinda "wimpy".
i bought a nh because the local jd dealer really "screwed me over" on a couple of gators i bought from him, but the nh is really a pretty neat machine.

You will not be dissapointed with Ventrac, believe me, I know! I have owned one now for four years! They are VERY customer centric and you just can't beat the versitility of the tractor. If you're going to get a Steiner/Ventrac, why not buy one from the designer, Ventrac!!

I cut 3-4 acres with my 4000 and have done so for four years. The tractor just keeps on going. I have also worked in wet areas around my yard that I did could not believe the tractor would drive through, but it did!<br>

This brings up an interesting fact that not many people know about.

In most jurisdictions there is a program to rebate the road taxes collected on fuel used 'off road'. If you contact the collecting authority (usually the State tax or finance people) they normally have a form that you can fill out for the rebate. In most cases this is nothing to do with, and does not require, that you are a 'farmer'.

Any off-road use qualifies, however they normally do NOT consider boats as off-road users. This is because a portion of the fuel taxes are used to maintain navigational aids, etc., so they consider boats as 'taxable users'.

If you don't buy your fuel road tax-free keep all the receipts and submit them along with the form.

Thanks Chief, I think I will have the dealer do the 50 hr. service. They are truly a great bunch of folks, and are extremely knowledgeable, always helpful, and almost always have the parts I need no matter how obscure! Yes I did get lots of bells and whistles too! Block and trans. heaters(wired to one plug), they welded a couple of hooks on the FEL bucket, and installed rearview mirrors. I had a switch put on the backup alarm because I will probably only need it at my neighbors house, they have small children. Mike.

I have one and it's been a good little tractor. Snow, dirt and lawnmowing. At 17 HP probably only a 4' cutter. Parts a little tricky.

You shouldn't leave them sit with pressure on them anyway, but sometimes its necessary to hold something in place for a while.

I will try this but that does not seem to be the problem. The brakes are not needed when I use just the loader. I tried at a stand still to put pressure on the lift and it done so very slowly. So it seems everything works but slowly. Thank you and please keep helping. Thank you all again.
