I have never done a FULL MOC of my SOPTM and surely hope and pray I never will. I sure Ken must feel the same way. My SOPTM I am sure would go into "emerency discharge" mode long before reaching the angle Ken did. Not a good way to treat the nice yellow tractor seat or good pair of draws. ;o)

The reason blades need sharpening is because I HOLLOW GRIND them....this means...sharpening them with less than a 20 degree angle....very sharpe......but then they dull quickly....a good friend of mine owns..FROST CUTLERY....That's right....he makes kinves.....about 10 years ago I got to talk with Jim's head metallurgist and ask him how to get blades the sharpest possible.....he helped me set up a grinding wheel to sharpen my blades at about 19 to 20 degrees....very sharpe....and also to cross blades at right angles....use 6 blades instead of 3....in order to produce clippings that are so tiny they just disappear into grass already cut....remember adding extra set of blades like this also allows me to cut at 7 to 8 inches hight.....when you cut this hight, you need MUCH more lifting power to raise grass and cut...this is accomplished also by the 6 blades as opposed to just 3....I have stated this here before.....JUST TRY IT..YOU WILL SEE...BTW..It is safe, because blades TIGHTEN AS THEY TURN, not loosen !<br>
I also put B 2910 and B 8200 on strong metal car ramps...to get to blades without taking MMM off....I can not believe that some people take their deck off to sharpen blades!...I can take blades off...pressure wash blades to get green gook off of them, sharpen them and re-install them in about 45 minutes....Yesterday I cut grass that was almost 20 inches high down to 7 to 8 inches...with no grass build-up !

It's sounding like it's not much of a problem. Now that I know it can happen I can identify the symptoms and shut things down before it stalls. If I just avoid chipping when the needles are wet it will probably never happen again. Feeding an occasional dry branch would work in theory, but when it lugs down in the middle of a 30 foot douglas fir, branches and all, it's not easy to pull the tree back out.

Blizzard, thanks for the link and Puma info. It probably would be a good idea to spray some PAM in there each time the chute is off.

Harvey, we really don't have many (any?) skeeters where we are. Certainly nothing like Alaska. It's really pleasant working in the woods this time of year. I've probably spent a good 50 hours out there in the last six weeks and haven't been attacked by a single bug.

Yes - it would seem that JD were at risk of a fall if they made a setting available which their engineering design didn't support. I'll still make the point with the dealer that I'm aware that the stresses are higher the way he's going to set the track - at least I'll have the comments on record if ever there is an issue.

I do have a separate question on varying rear grader tilt - vertical plane. As mentioned above, I'm buying a rear grader which is manually adjustable for offset (L-R) as well as for tilt. I figured that with sloping land this would allow me to e.g. cut tracks which were level, even with the tractor on a slope. However, I've been reading elsewhere about a top and tilt hydraulic control (from Integration Engineering) for the 3ph. This seems to be a much superior answer to my tilt needs, but I can't find any indication of price. Does anyone have any idea of a ballpark $ figure - failing that I'll call them direct, just a bit awkward given the time-zone difference.

Dennis, I think I may switch over to the Cabot OVT. I am getting tired of this oil base cleanup. And I am not happy with the gallon to gallon consistency of Benjamin Moore. Thanks for your input!

I would appreciate an experienced opinion. I am considering importing a Futian/Foton eurpean leapord Model 804 from China, as I cannot afford the named tractor brands. Can any one advise the short commings of these tractors, and advise any good or bad experiences with this tractor

After all the great advice, I made my first attack on the beach today. Right now, I am mostly moving sand around that got displaced during Isabel. My opinion of the TC30 is growing - got a lot of work done. My 5' York rake was very effective in moving sand using it like a grader blade. Had trouble raking up debris though, kept plowing sand. Today I'm going to try removing every other rake tine to see if this helps let sand filter through. If this fails, I'll look at some of the rake options suggested here.

Murf, It didn't take long to learn about the importance of speed. I kept watching the front axle and kept the speed slow enough to prevent sand from being thrown on top of the axle. I hate the thought of the seals being covered in abrasive material. I like your advice about the sprayer and will probably power wash when finished today. I'm also being pretty anal about using the grease gun.

Built many and building one now. Strip off the top soil at least 6-8 inches deep. If sub soil is real sticky (clay) I'd use ground fabric also. Have bank run gravel brought in to back fill 6-8 inches above your old grade. I like to see at least 2 feet extra around all sides. Have building built bring in #1st or #1 stone or Course Sand to set your final grade prior to pouring concrete.

Thanks Grinder, I had already checked the retail pricing for JD quick hitch front blade $455 + $531 for the front quick hitch and hyd lift + $148 for hyd angling. All totaled $1134 retail price. I suppose with the quick hitch feature I could set up the FEL if needed in no time. What do you think would be a fair price for that setup?

If you let your yard get that tall why is removing clippings a concern????

Get a bungy cord and open your discharge chute cover and blow the clipping out evenly across the yard.

Many times I remow in a higher gear to remove and clumping and stuff that did not cut right because of its lenght. I do not mow as often as I should (I try for once a week) but then again I have a yard and the neighbors and neighborhood org's can KMA.

I have a 240D,
and if the low speed shifter (on the right just under the seat) is not up or down all the way the tractor will not move, it sorta stays in a netural.
Try this pull the 4wd shifter back all the way, push in the clutch, start up the tractor put it in 1st gear then as you let out the clutch pull up (easy) on the slow speed shifter if you hear it grinding a little push in the clutch and pull the slow speed shifter all the way up or all the way down depending if want to go fast or realy slow, then stop, clutch in and put it in 4wd. always stop before changing gears.
You really didn't give enough info on this problem, you my already know all of this!

Around here, about $3000-$4000. Don't know what the Sherman auxillary will add; I've seen units by themselves go for $500-$1000.
I believe you can place a classified ad on this board; will reach more antique tractor enthusiasts at ytmag.com, where you can place picture ads, classified with no picture, or auction.

I may have a buyer Mon, if not the dealer said we can trade, he will throw in a few extras. Does anyone know how much hassle it is to change blades on the BX series? I guess I have been spoiled the the rear deck on my 3010!

Before I would change anything I would find out where my hydraulic system gets it fluid, your filter looks like an oil filter and is probably on the side of your engine...Any Long dealer can provide you with the paticulars for your tractor

I have the same tractor . Zetors have a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder notorious for leaking and or freezing up. That is most likely your problem. A new one is only about $45 and should solve all your problems. There are otherwise a very tough tractor.
