I really don't think the "looking back" aspect will bother me at all since I'll be using this on my own property. As time goes by, I'll learn how to go to overlap and such, and the little looking back I'll have to do won't be a problem.

However, if I did this for 20 years and made my living doing exactly that, I think I probably would look for a FMM or MMM. Thanks!

My Ford has synchromesh TX gears and non-synchromesh range gears. No problem shifting the TX on the fly but many CUT's don't have synchromesh or glide-shift etc. However, TX gears tend to be fairly close and people were shifting cars and trucks long before synchromesh. It's a matter of getting the input and output shaft rpm's fairly close, and they start off fairly close when the gear ratios aren't to change much.

I suppose there's potential for matching shaft rpm's with double-clutching if the foot throttle is used as Harvey mentioned. The throttle also could be increased while the TX is in neutral to help with down shifting as well. The gears on my range are wider spaced than the TX gears and I never shift those without coming to a stop. Irrespective of a TX type, you don't want to grind gears trying to shift on the fly and above all avoid feathering the clutch.

I am trying to decide whether to order the direct pin-on bucket or go with a skid-steerer style quick coupler and bucket for my new machine (L3130). Which is more flexible for adding on other "things" to the FEL (LA723)? Any other positives or negatives about either style?

Back to maybe learning something--for myself anyway. I think safety relief settings on 3ph's are around 1,500 lbs. higher than system relief pressures. That's probably true for loader valves as well. If so then maybe what a loader can lift isn't the main potential load since it could sustain considerably greater shock loads when the valves were in neutral.

My impression is that system relief pressures may have more to do with balance and stability and maybe with front axle and hydraulic component longevity than with protecting the structure. Anyway, I can see all sorts of reasons why a manufacturer might want to limit the static lift capacity well below the structural limits, and the difference between static and moving weight on castings is a murky subject well beyond me. Digging with a loader is going to produce very different loads than lifting or carrying weight. Hard telling if a 4in1 bucket allows work a tractor wasn't engineered for and if weight is the main issue.

It's best here when we all contribute as well as learn and recognize that we do so. Wonder if I've contributed anything here?

a couple of years ago when john deere still made real garden tractors. There was two different companies that built hoes for a 318-430 garden tractors. They were 5 foot hoes. You could also use cadplans build it yourself. I just got a set from another member, he built on for a 2210. Also could hire yourself a mexican at $6 an hour and give him a shovel.

The only times I've heard of Agracat contacting anybody in their dealer network lately (as recently as Tuesday anyway) is when they want money. My own dealer's parent company has taken the Agracat-sourced Jinmas and ATVs off their website. Prior to that, they reconstructed what was originally AgraCat parts support - and now draw Jinma parts from three different sources. They're selling some Fotons now, while looking around for a long term replacement for the Agracat supplied Jinma line. Other dealers still holding green AgraCat inventory are now having fire sales. When I contacted AgraCat's ISP last year to find out what happened to the AgraCat website, the tone of the conversation was "they stopped paying us, so we stopped serving them". You've already heard a comment about the phone drop, and I can attest to their lack of response to email as well.<br>

Tractortips gives 'Universal' as the engine make for two models of 2610's. Ford tended to use their own engines in Farm tractors but there was a 4-cylinder version of the 4000 that could have used a different engine. The 2610 uses a 4-cylinder engine that's in the ball park for a Ford 4000 size. A Ford/Long relationship might have come through Fiat.

I did a search on universal diesel engines. The hits were mostly for marine diesels. I suppose the company could have specialized since the days of the Ford '000 series tractors. If it is a Ford engine there should be a decent supply of salvage and after-market parts.

Might be worth thinking about overall traction needs. Some fairly radical flotation tires probably are available that put so much rubber on the ground that one could run over your foot without much effect. They wouldn't compact the soil much but they also have very little traction.

Thanks guys! Guess the vertical distance between lower and top links isn't part of the standard. I don't suppose it makes any difference if the post I remembered or my recollection of it was off. Always happy to learn something.

I'm thinking that the closer the 3ph and implement distance between the links are the more constant the implement level would be. Equal distances should make a parallelogram configuration. I think I'll see how close to a parallelogram my box scraper makes the next time it's on. That might be an explanation for why I'm almost constantly on the top-link control when grading. Of course, if the cut did increase as the 3ph raised it might tend to cut the tops off bumps and gouge the dips less.

Steve; Sounds like the dealer is offering you a fair price. But I'm afraid you'll be buying an orphan. Unless you have a special puropse that doesn't require much traction and plan to keep it forever, don't buy it. 4wd is an absolute must in almost any use situation especially if you plan on geting a loader. R4 tires are the only tire you should consider, again unless you have a special need for them, turf tires are almost impossible to trade off around here. Frank.

It sounds like a good idea. I am not sure if I would want calcium or salt on the floor in my shed because of corossion issues.

I think I would lean toward a very light oil mixture (oil and kero blend) spray on with a garden sprayer very light and retreat areas that get scuffed. Or try a Janitor supply house and get the stuff they use on tile before pushing a big dust mop up and down the floor.

You might even be able to dilute a asphalt emlusion blend enought to geta very light coating.

Then, since the brakes are on the tractor doesn't go very well.<br>

I get off, grip the brake rods and firmly push them down, releasese the brakes and off I go no prob until I step on the brake again.<br>

I get around this by using the hydro to stop the tractor. When I release the cruise control, I use the reverse pedal to get the tractor to slow quickly.<br>

If the water is moving, you need to get the bottom of the wall below the sediment bed of the creek, or the bed will erode out from the bottom of the wall. You also need embedment at the bottom of the wall to resolve the tie back force at the top, otherwise the bottom of the wall fails, ( pushes out ). For embedment, you should have at least as much in the soil as the height of the retaining wall.

If you are at the water table, jetting 5" cedar posts into the ground with a water jet is a simple and fast way to set the structure of the wall. For a water jet, use a 10' piece of 3/4' pipe on a 2" pump. The water jet will blow the hole as quickly as you drop the post into it. The challenge is holding the post in place until the soil sets the post after you remove the jet. Once the posts are set, use the stringers at 2' centers vertically as you described. I then use galvanized barn sheeting( about $.50 / sq ft ) and again jetted it in behind the stringers. Cap the whole thing off with treated 2 x 8's.

The setback of your deadmen is deternined by the height of the wall and the angle of repose of the backfill soil. As a rule of thumb, come back from the wall at least as far as the wall is high above the bottom of the ditch and then add as necessary to make sure your deadmen are in virgin soil. There are two types of deadmen depending on how they develop their resisitance to movement. You can use passive earth pressure, or depend on the contact area of the deadman against movement. You don't need a lot of mass, just a large contact area to resist movement. Often, a continuous ditch is dug along the setback distance and filled with concrete and 2 rows of no.4 bars. Tie the posts back with rebar or stainless wire rope. It is good to slightly pre-stess the tie backs before backfilling, otherwise the posts could move until the tie back is stressed. The other type is mass. Dig a hole the proper distance back and fill with concrete. Add a 3/4" stainless ring with 8" of embedment in the concrete.

To calculate the tie back force at the top of the wall, it can be approximated by the following:

P (force/ft of wall)=[(height x width) / 2] x 125lbs/cu.ft.
This resultant force is applied to the wall by the retained soil about 1/3 down from the top of the wall. This is the ideal elevation for the tie-backs. This is per foot of wall, so multiply this by your post spacing for your tie back force.

Height... is the height of the retained soil
Width.... is the width of the retained soil, which is dependant on the angle of repose. Assume 45 degrees conservatively, and the width is 75% of the height.

Looks like a mess at first, but you need to hold back the weight of a wedge of soil. Keep in mind that any vertical loads along the wall will result in additional horizontal reactions on the wall. Add 30% to the tie back force for any vertical loads along the wall. Add a good geo-fabric behind the wall before backfilling to allow water to pass through but not soil. You want to avoid building any hydraulic pressure behind the wall.

You may also try Wet-n-Black on the handles. I use it on my grab handles and other plastic parts and it does a good job keeping them from chalking.
