Unless you want (need) the lawn to look like a putting green I don't see why you couldn't use a bush-hog to cut the lawn. A lot of rural properties around here are maintained that way. If the blades are sharp, it's set up properly and the ground is pretty flat it will do a very respectable job.

No, you will not like cutting a pasture with a finish mower, besides, as has already been mentioned, a bush-hog is a LOT less money.

The other option is to buy a flail (Mott) type mower with a continous tail roller, it will cutr the pasture just fine, but watch out for the rocks, and will make your lawn look terrific. It is a lot more money than a bush-hog, but less than buying a bush-hog AND a finish mower.

Tractors without PS steer hard when a loader is mounted--more so with a load. I have old style power-assisted steering and it still steers pretty hard.

It's likely normal for the tractor and some weight on the 3ph is needed. I usually leave my box scraper or other heavy implement on the 3ph to improve the balance and lighten the steering. Other people find they need a ballast box.

I've seen these and they look pretty nice. I am thinking of modifying the PHD I have to accomplish the same thing. The PHD I have has a 3' control bar off the gear box to allow applying pressure and controlling the auger. I would prefer to not have anyone holding onto the unit.

That sounds about right. I do keep my 1710 (similar to a TC29) because there is on-going work that a smaller tractor couldn't manage well. However, the 1710 wouldn't be great for moving because we have a lot of landscaping and out buildings. It would take too long to maneuver and leave too much trimming. I use a riding mower.

A smaller tractor might be generally more busy, but when I need the size and power I really need it and getting contractors to come to the deep country is a little irregular sometimes.

Depending on the land, I'd take care not to create grade with those paths that will cause erosion, because then there'd be lots of maintenance to do.

Discussion at the meeting sounds like it got heated. Even so, a CD rep doesn't own the corporate lawyers nor make the decision to use them. To me that seems a very unusual reaction from a CS rep no matter how the meeting went. For that matter a new tractor or nothing also seems unusual and I wonder why a new machine was mentioned in the first place.

In absence of indications of abuse or speced maintenance/inspection routines that weren't carried out, fixing the loader would seem to be a reasonable solution. Sounds to me like everybody and especially JD CS may want to start over again on this one.

It's kind of funny the dealer told me it was a defective or weak spool valve, so they order one. The funny thing is last night I was showing a friend the tractor and now the steering seems to work fine... I don't know what to do, have them replace it or let it go and see what happens. Anyway, I will talk to the dealer and see what they recommend.
