Grinder, there are many ways to topdress, none of them are 'wrong', some are just less expensive, or less work.

If you don't have a huge area to do, such as spot treatment like you mentioned, a shovel works fine. It may take a few shovelfulls to get the hang of it but basically get a bucket full of really loose material, loose is the key, picking it up and slowly dumping it several times will help, then with the bucket at waist level (to save your back) take a 1/2 scoop and sort of fling it sideways over the area, distributing it as best you can.

If you have huge areas to do, like the whole lawn, they make 'topdressers' (see my pic. # 16) which are usually much like a manure spreader only instead of a beater bar at the back they have a broom like a power sweeper, this brush casts a fine spray of topsoil, sand or whatever you want to spread. They are expensive, but some places, turf supply or turf equip. dealers, will rent them. Some turf operations will come and do it for a fee with their equipment.

If you have REALLY fine topsoil, and it's very dry, a 3pth fertilizer spreader will do it, but it can be a real pain sometimes. Check the bigger rental houses near you.

If you are adding less than 1/2" seed first, it's less work, just don't bury the seed deeper than that or you won't get much germination.

We topdress 1/4" twice a year, every year on some properties, the existing grass just keeps coming up with the soil levels.

Tom, That's right, the single crank pin and the relatively narrow 45 degree V twin cylinder angle gives the distinctive Harley sound. I've always understood that it is to protect the driver in a rolling over situation. My Cadet 7275 ROPS is attached to the metal fenders with supports underneath. A simple bracket at the bottom has cross pins where the bracket has several hole positions to pin allowing forward and rearward tilting.

In your situation, it sounds like you want to move the ROPS backward for a low clearance situation. When using the backhoe, does you head bump the ROPS meaning that you may want to also tilt it forward slightly during BH use?

Deere sells a folding ROPS unit for their 4000 series and may also sell one for your model. Safety is always a critical issue as was posted. Buying JD original equipment may be worth the money in this case. If you or someone fabs a unit, a good point was to keep the original unit for the time when you sell it.

Do you live on totally flat land and stay away from ditches, etc.? You may just want to remove it when mowing under trees. Older farm tractors never had the ROPS system, however CUT's are like the SUV to the auto industry and have a higher potential for rollover because of their tall, short and narrow stance compared to most other tractor styles.

Pretty good response from Hardwood. I'll comment on just one thing in the list. There's plenty that remains for later and other joining in.

Some sway in an implement is desirable so if there are anti-sway chains or bars I wouldn't take all the slack out of them. I'd also avoid using the rear cutter in reverse very aggressively. 3ph's are much stronger pulling than pushing. It isn't too difficult to bend lower link arms. There are stories of broken cases if something is hit when going very fast. The rear cutter isn't an entirely adequate poor man's dozer.

Another way to break the 3ph using the rear cutter is when cutting when going down a hill. When the bottom is reached most times the box will lift the 3ph rather than digging in. If the tractor isn't stopped the 3ph goes against it's mechanical stops and can break the hitch. Slow is good when using the rear cutter and so is avoiding sharp turns.

If you anticipate on-going scraper work you might investigate a hydraulic top-link. They simplify blade angle adjustments, and frequent adjustments are needed to keep the blade angle right for the work.

I paid $9850 for the package. I think the bucket was about $900 give or take. So the tractor and deck should be under $9000. They have a 60" deck, I was told it is $300 more than the 52" I bought; garage space is tight so I got the smaller one. It mows MUCH faster than my Cub Cadet!!!!!

My dealer said they don't use the break-in oil, and suggested the standard 15-40 (talked with several of the mechanics as well as the parts guy, got the same response). What is the risk of not using the break-in oil? Especially when doing the first change at less than 50 hours?

Too bad that happened and I'm a bit surprised at NH's response. I don't know if the tractor's history contains use of 3ph hoes, implements larger than recommended or the combination of heavy ballast, big loader weight and fast speeds on rough roads, if not then the situation doesn't say much for NH design. It also doesn't do much for a manufacturer's reputation among potential customers.

It sounds like the tech rep may be a bit deficient in PR skills and maybe you'd receive a better response from corporate CS reps. Warranty lengths are intended to cover the bulk of manufacturing defects. There are stories around where manufacturers have repaired major failures on tractors that were out of warranty just because it's is nearly impossible to say for particular cases if a defect caused it.

Generally it makes good business sense to be a little less in a customer's face since I at this moment may be forming an idea where I'll look for my next tractor--and I am interested in the outcome of this situation. A cynical view is that maybe manufacturers are trying to lever everybody into buying extended warranties and the CS people won't care about customers who don't have them.

Speaking of tip speed, what speed should I be looking for? Is there a "rule of thumb" minimum where anything below gives a less-than-adequate cut? This is very new to me... this criteria has never been mentioned--even by tractor sales folk.

Same for the other criteria--do I *really* need a heavy-duty deck? Here's the specs as shown on the Tractor Supply website:

From past discussions JD's response is surprising. JD owners have said that they obtained date of production as well as date and place of sale from JD--maybe there's been a policy change. I know that date as well as production shift and other information is built into the serial number on my Ford and I think most tractors were like that--perhaps until recently.

I still think that there's virtual certainty that any manufacturer would have pretty good tracking info on a tractor. Otherwise how could assembly plant or OEM supplier defects be identified? If there are safety defects found or PIPS, how could recall notices be issued? Production changes are fairly common so how would a dealer know which parts to order except from the serial number?

I accept that tractors don't have new models every year and maybe the reality in these days of 'virtual manufacture' is that 'year' becomes an obsolete concept. Still, it really is not very believable that JD doesn't know the date and assembly plant a tractor came from or was delivered to dealer. Maybe a different question would receive a better answer.

This is only my opinion formed from experience not any scientific studys. I'm really not a big believer in synthetics unless the owners manual calls for it. I'd stick with what he factory recomdations are unless they change their specs. for some reason. We do use synthetics in certian gearbox aplications where it's called for, at eight bucks a quart (JD) it has to be doing something that mineral oils can't. In my case it involves a high temprature extreme preshure situation in a 3,000. dollar gearbox. I realize that tractor engines have a harder life than an automobile or pickup, but with timely mantinence with the recommended lubracants the tin worm eats up the body before the engine wears out on most cars. Just my thoughts, Frank.

I think that I am going to see how much more the TC40d is, and if is not to much more, I'll get that. If it is to much more, I'll go with the TC35D. As far as discounts go, all the ones around me (JD, Masey F., NH, Kabuta ((spelling?)), Kioti and afew others) are all pretty solid on their prices. Not many discounts. JD has a once a year sale. They offered me the 4210 at $400 cheaper, not my idea of a big sale. NH quoted me at $19000 even for the TC35DA with a loader, filled tires of my choice, and a rotary cutter. I believe that the have better financing than JD aswell, and their warranty is 2 years, where as JD is 1 year. If I had more money, I'd get a bigger JD, but after all, it's for working around the land, and it seems to have what it takes.
Let me know what you end up doing aswell.

Congratulations on the new tractor and set up! Sounds like you did a like bargaining and got the seller to come down $1,000. You got a nice selection of equipment at a nice price! I don't have a 70A manual and JD does not show them online. I am sure one of the folks here will jump in that has one. If the owner did not give you one with the tractor, you would be wise to buy one to have for reference and maintenance. Have fun! ;o)

After 2 years and 205 hours my only complaint on my DK 35 so far has been the bucket roll back power of the KL1450 loader.
I made new bucket linkage and raised the bucket pins up 3", seems better now !!
The tractor has been absolutely FLAWLESS !!
