Checked with a Kubota dealer & found trator like I was looking for. The model is L3430 with ac cab. Has 34 hp, which is all I need. Now have JD4100 (with 20hp), which I love, except has no ac. Smallest tractor JD has with ac cab is a 53hp, and costs about $5,000 more, and will be more expensive to operate. Any reason I should look further. Don't want to underbuy or overbuy.

You won't have to worry about having enough hp for the medium duty. I have a medium duty six footer that works fine and my tractor has less power than the TC40. I'm not sure on the fixed vs. floating tailgate issue.

My chart is pretty straight-forward. There are three columns, each one for a different ground speed: 2.5 MPH, 3.75 MPH, and 5 MPH. There are ten rows, each one for a different lever position: 1-10. The chart assumes that the tractor PTO will run at 540 RPM and throw medium sized granules out about 20 feet. In the table, there is a figure for each coordinate (lever position and ground speed) that tells you how many pounds per acre will be applied.<br>

Most fertilizers will tell you how many pounds per 1,000 square feet you should apply or how many total square feet a bag will cover. My first step is to convert the application rate from the bag to a total pounds per acre. For example, we'll use a 50 # bag of fertilizer that says it cover 12,500 square feet. <br>

1 bag = 50 pounds<br>
1 bag covers 12,500 sq. ft.<br>
1 acre = 43,560 sq. ft.<br>
<br>
43,560 divided by 12,500 = 3.485<br>
Total number of bags per acre = 3.485<br>
Total weight per acre = 174.25 pounds<br>

Now I go to my chart and pick my speed, which is typically 3-4 MPH for spreading fertilizer. I look down the column for 3.75 MPH and see that at a lever position of '4' I will spread 196 pounds per acre if I travel 3.75 MPH. I set my lever at a littl under '4' and try to maintain a steady speed.<br>

The other factor here is that you will likely spread similar material over time and you will learn and remember each setting for various materials. In my case, I set my setting at about 3 1/2 for my spring fertilizer/pre-emergent and I end up with a little extra that I spread out over expected problem areas at a lighter (lower numbered) setting. The case abopve is pretty typical and I usually expect to spread 15 or 16 bags of spring pre-emergent on my 4 acres.<br>

Of course none of this matters if your chart is different than mine :~} If you need to use the trial and error method, it's better to apply too light and go over the whole area twice. In fact, many people do this as a rule anyway. Until you have an established pattern, this will help you avoid striping by giving you good overlap of your passes. Pete<br>

AV8R, I live on the Wisconsin side near the bottom end of Lake Pepin near the confluence of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers in a little town called Nelson.

Every day I drive home from work in Rochester MN and I'm in awe of the beauty of the river valley. I get to see it as I come down the 400 foot bluffs and it makes me realize why I commute for an hour.

I would replace the nut if you can with a nylon lock nut. It's the type of nut typically used in aircraft installations. Overall it is a metal nut with a nylon insert. It should not back out. You should find this at a good hardware store like True Value or any other one which has a large selection of fastners.

Sounds pretty good. I paid 23k for the same thing with R4 tires and quicktach, 72" bucket. But everything here costs a lot. always.

Thanks guys. I am going to try the 24-hour trickle charge. This site really has knowledgeable members. This morning I lost a neighbor of 40 years in a house fire but I will read in more detail the post to my question. He was near the point of death from ephemera but the entire attic was involved before they knew the house was on fire. His wife lost some hair but made it out. She and a nearby son just could not get him out of a window but the fire department arrived and kept the fire from his body. If you are planning to build and like me have (or may have) mobility issues look at having an outside exit from your bedroom. Batteries are still on my mind but my day would have been better if my neighbor had had an exit door in his bedroom.

I have seen nothing of an after market hood. I would try on of the tractor wrecking yards. The Yanmar has the same hood so you at least have two options.
The price I saw for my 750 I convinced me a lot of panel beating was in store. I think you might get some one for fabricate the pieces you need cheaper.
I am not sure it the new Yanmar hood components would be cheaper?

I have lived next to some of the great lakes and I can say it is like the north west rain forest, location, location location.
We lived below the Niagara escartment in Ontario, next to the lake. You can not say it did not get hot. Even the beach provided no relief. They don't grow peaches there for nothing. The Falls and the lake provide about as much humidity as you can handle. Very little snow. Seventy miles down the lake you get lake effect snow and a breaze in the summer. No real need for air conditioning. Driving along the 401 with the windows down you could feel the heat drop as you moved out along the lake.
Go to Buffalo or Watertown NY, Sault St Marie, Wawa or the Bruce Penninsula and talk lack snow, you are likely to be accosted.

AV8R, no thats not the Cub strip, the strip is out of the picture across the street.

I have the cub at the farm for the winter, we have a heated hanger big enough for the whole family fleet. I will look, I may have some pictures I can scan.

The Cub will likely be sold to my cousin this summer since I am putting a Murphy Super Rebel in the air this summer and I have been told that I am only allowed to keep one. If I 'sell' it to my cousin then I get to keep it, hehehehe.

If you get yourself a Cub be sure to do the 180hp conversion, the 1500 fpm climb is a hoot, and the 5 second lift-off on floats is a great way to get out of small lakes, or big ones full of Jet-Skiis and boats.

Every time i've seen these (outfitted the same) for sale with less then 400 hrs, they typically go for about 9k-$10K. For a dealer to be asking $6500 makes me real curious.<br>

Ask em what's wrong with it. It may have some engine or hydro issues. If nothing is wrong with it.. buy it and sell it on Ebay. Make a clean $3k the easy way.<br>

How is it possible that you are not "adding weight to haul around" if it is there in the tires all the time ???

I beleive the point of a ballast box is to be able to add and remove the weight quickly as the need requires. That way, for instance, if you have some work to do on a delicate surface, like turf, you can drop the excess weight and 'tread lightly'.

3 point backhoes like the PRaire DOG don't come with subframes due to the unique subframe mounting characteristics of every individual tractor. Unfortunately there are no one-size-fits-all subframes, to fit every tractor That is why the Praire dog 7.5 is cloned to a Woods 7500. Woods makes most subframes to fit your individual tractor. What you need to do is get ahold of a Wood's dealer and have him to order a Wood's 7500 subframe to fit your model JD tractor. Woods will make a subframe to fit your make a model tractor. It will cost your 400.00 or more dollars. The Wood's subframe will fit like a glove to your Praire Dog 7.5. I have a Wood's subframe on my Praire Dog. Make sure you have your tractor equipped with a heavy duty top link bracket if one is available for your tractor. I loaded the pix of the light duty and heavy duty top link brackets on my profile pictures under picture #7 (I hope it erased the old #7 picture). The light duty bracket is in my hand and the heavy duty bracket is on tractor. BIG DIFFERENCE in the heavy duty bracket.

My TC29 handles a 72" box blade pretty well, so I'd say the 60" on your TC24 would be fine.
I was glad I got the 6' instead of the 5' box. Having a little extra width past the tires helps on some projects.

Just for sharing info: My dealer had a 20hp Jinma that broke a valve spring which left the valve not fully retracted into the head. In turn the valve did for a time bounce off of the piston on the top stroke until the valve bent. Once bent it caused the connecting rod to break. Luckely the rod did not go through the side of the block. These types of things do not happen often, but they do suggest that with noise shut down the tractor until you find out what is wrong. It is also interesting that the mfg. of loaders, knowing what tractor it is going on, do not put the correct hyd. connectors on the loader or at least have instructions for the installer to check to see if there is a match. A number of hyd. pumps have been damaged due to this lack of detail. Again my dealer ruined the seals on a pump due to the connector error.
