I have a larger CUT than you. I fall plow with a single bottom moldboard plow about 6-8" deep. In the spring I go over it once with my landscaping rake (photo #8) which has spikes in the front and beam to level furrows, etc. I then do the garden with my walk behind tiller. I'm hitting some 4-6" stones at times which gives me a slight jolt as it jumps over it. I have allot of stones that just fit between the rows of tiller blades that often jam. By reversing the rotation, they often unplug. When it jams, the belt slips.

With a PTO driven tiller you have positive drive. If you hit too hard, you will bust-off a shear pin. The weight of the device won't bounce over like the walk behind.

I also have a 32" wide (approx.)belt driven rear tiller that fits my lawn & garden tractor. I have several garden plots at several properties. Only one property has the stones. I quite using this one on that property since it got to be a pain bouncing and jamming on rocks.

The size garden you're speaking of can be done with a walk behind once the you have broken the sod. A fall plowing breaks up the soil while the frost heaves and further loosens it. I don't know if your tractor is large enough to do a moldboard style plow so a chisel plow will do pretty much the same thing.

If you try to go from a plowed garden directly to a walk behind tiller, the uneven terrain really is hard to muscle through. (kinda like a boat on the perfect storm).

I also have a 60" KK tiller. I use it up-north and have hit some rocks and cement slabs and many tree roots. I've only broken a few shear pins while the rest of the unit seems ok. If you are careful, you can get by without damaging much.

I have a vague recollection that some consoles on new tractors are weatherproof. If not and the tractor doesn't have a cab there might be some difficulty finding a surface mounted all-weather gauge. The alternative would be to get a tractor style gauge and sender and use a big hole saw to cut a hole in the console. I'd keep in mind that not every gauge works with every sender. I also seem to recall that some gauges on JD's I think had serious fogging problems. Between weather and fogging I don't think an auto box-store gauge would be too good.

I not sure that I quite got the question right, but usage doesn't change the volume pumped much in open centered systems (not including HST's). It's true that flow does decrease as working pressure increases but most pumps have pretty good volumetric efficiencies.

It's a little hard to estimate heat dissipation through tractor cases that also contain TX parts, and the presence of an oil cooler also would change things. I seem to recall a rule of thumb of more like 2 times reservoir capacity to flow but that may be for pto pumps doing heavy work like driving hoes or motors. There was a discussion awhile back about whether operating hydraulics at low engine rpm's might over-heat the oil.

Around here the mud season is the time between snow and ice and black flies when most outside activity shuts down. When I realize that it's coming it's me that wakes up mean and ornery.

I save my spring tractor work for awhile not only because I'll get stuck. Later means that I may be breathing diesel exhaust but at least it keeps the black flies down so I can be outside without a slather of DEET or turning into a purple bloody pulp.

I think the question of do you want a tractor is as important as do you need one. Most individual's needs go beyond notions of economic justification. I think that CUT's are seldom needed by homeowners, and even fewer are economically justified. Besides, how would an economic justification be calculated? An economist would start applying 'imponderables and heuristics' and then you'd be right back to the question of 'you want one?'

I drove my wife wild with months of economics before I got mine. She finally said 'You want one, the money's there if we don't do other things so we should just get one.' I think a CUT is best thought of as a choice a family makes about how things will get done. It's a good thing if the work gets done and a tractor fits into the rest of life gracefully.

I agree with Chief. That is the classic symptoms of a bad connection somewhere. Usually it is the battery clamps/battery posts. Go to an auto parts store and get a battery cleaner tool. It has a small brush to clean the inside of the clamps and another brush to clean the posts. There is often a white powdery looking deposit on the posts and clamps that is easy to overlook but will break the circuit.
If that fails, take your battery to an auto parts store and let them check it. A weak battery can have similar symptoms.

Rossco, hold the grease gun tight against the zerk fitting it should go in, if not clean or replace fitting ,the grease gun is hard to pump on this fitting and must be held tight against it.( must be very tight tolerance!)

drcvi; I too add my sorrows for your loss. I went to three funerals last week plus three men younger than me had heart attacks within the last two weks, thank God all survived. I can't add much to what's allready been said except don't let your mind turn to mush in front of the TV. Get the tractor and keep your body and especially your mind busy. Frank.

After seeing three local fellows in their mid fiftys have heat attacks in the last two weeks, they all survived so far thank God, and I'm close to ten years older than them I've decided to move ahead a little faster on my retirement weld shop project. I'm sort of a brand loyal freak so I'd like to stick with Jet brand equipment. The dealership has been there probably 50 yrs before Jet was ever heard of, and allways treated me right. Anyhow, I'd like to get a shear, either the Jet PS 1652 pneumatic or the HS 1652 Hydraulic. Do any of you have one of these models, or have any knowledge about them, I've never seen one other than the catalog. I've got plenty of air to operate the air model, but is there a reason the hydraulic is better? If my memory is correct it seems that the air model is about 1,000. less money. Any opinions positive or negative would be apreciated. Thanks, Frank.

That about happened to me once. About 20 yrs. ago one of the kids had an old Dodge college car that our local mechanic replaced the brakes on, the next day I bought a set of tires for it over the phone from a big town flash and bang tire place, sent the girl in to have the tires mounted. I warned her they would try to sell her everthing from new antifreeze to whatever it did'nt need. Guess what in less than an hour she called back, the "TECH" said it needed new brakes!!! I ask the daughter to let me talk to the "TECH". I don't think I need to tell the rest of the story. Frank.

I worked hit & run investigations for 5 years with APD (Mark..back when we had a traffic unit). The prevalent motives for leaving the scene were/are: no insurance; suspended/revoked O.L.; DWI; borrowed vehicle (loaned it to my buddy, John..don't know his last name and haven't seen him again); teenager scared of his/her parents reaction; running from the scen of another crime; insurance fraud (this last one deals with reporting a H&R when it never happened)...in about that order.

H&R is a serious issue and those caught need to be seriously dealt with, BUT, the sorry fact is that about 35% of drivers are un-insured. So..the only answer is to buy coverage that you can afford and assume the idiot that trashes your vehicle is un-insured. This really means that you are buying coverage for you and anyone else out there that doesn't.

Throwing the lowlifes in jail is a positive but does not pay for the damage. AND..lowlifes never have any assets to attack.

You've probably lost ground and backfed your wiring harness. Step one is to clean your ground connection at the frame. This should be at the base of the steering box.You might even add another ground wire to the engine block. Then inspect the harness and the various accesories and switches for burns or failures. I don't know how the seal being out of place makes it abuse?
If the shaft breaks and gets to flopping around, the first thing it is going to take out will be the seal !
