I did use an old WeldpPak 100 the other night at work. Had a couple 3/16 brackets that I just stuffed onto a 1/4 bigger piece just for fun. This welder was 4-5 years old, heavily used. First pass came out a bit wierd. Making 2-3" passes around these little scrap pieces. A couple more tries and it came out OK, barely OK. All settings maxed-out. Wouldn't have done anything thicker.

I was fixing some elevators at the airport the other day and came across some iron-workers doing an overhead decking project. They said they use them occasionally for little tack jobs and other pissy things. Not sure which brand or size but a 110vac unit. They say if gun uses .035 you can increase heat by using .031 wire.

I s'pose I'll use my normal rule: configure what I'll do at a maximum and take one more step.

I have been very impressed with my 7800. I like everyone else started looking smaller 7500 and then the dealer reccomended the 7800. I like the size of the machine (big enough to do larger jobs and small enough to maneuver around). I do think you may be hard pressed to get the tractor, loader, mower and backhoe for under $20,000. Maybe Art will cut you a good deal!!!!!! If so I'll be up to see Art this weekend for the backhoe!!!!
Most important thing in your deal is to get Chief a hat!!!

Actually, I was kind of fond of the Quantum. You can't beat 36-38 MPG. My kids still have fun recollections of fueling at the truck stops in between the 18 wheelers and it only waxed up on me once. I am close to buying a diesel tractor right now. The Quantum had a lot of good miles left in it with maybe one tiny rust spot on the body, the nice VW alloy sport wheels and new rubber. The independent guy that I use for my German cars said flatly that he would slap a new head on it but nothing more. The VW dealer quoted me thousands for a rebuilt engine and then ushered me into the showroom and said "trading it really is the smart thing to do".

You are right - it's a different story in Europe. You see diesel Audis and Benz's all the time. We just need to get use to working on them over here. You can't beat the MPG.

hard to say here in nc,, i bought one about a month ago in great shape and paid 5500 then bought another last weekend from a sale for 2650 in as good of shape if not better,, so just depends on who wants it and where you are,, i guess

i was starting my tractor mon. and sparks came from the lower dash area,and all power shut down.I have no power to anything.Ive only found 1 fuse on the entire tractor. any suggestions

I love my unit. I'm in central Ohio, so in December & January it was all "cozy & protected" in the barn! But, I've had it out since. Starts immediately, runs smo-o-o-th. I love this C.U.T. Don't know if I mentioned before, mine is a T450.
I have two acquaintances, one a Mahindra dealer, and one a Kubota dealer. I spent tons of time demo-ing both brands; bush-hogged a field w/ the Mahindra. I loved that tractor.
But, the Kubota was too expensive and the Mahindra's paint scheme wasn't like the TYM's. Honest to God! They're both very comparable.
For me it came down to: 1) Scorpion was a bit less $$ 2) Dealer in Zanesville (very close to me) is a great guy and runs a great, family-owned store 3) The red & gray Scorpion T450 was perfect for an OSU Buckeye fan !!!!!

I am also trying to decide between a Steiner and a Ventrac
I mow 5 acres weekly and another 10 bi-weekly. My problem is under ground springs. It's mid summer before my yard
dries out. I'm hoping that one of these all wheel drives will get me through the wet part without tearing everything up. I also like the turf and bar tires instead of the treads. Is anyone familar with mowing wet grass areas with either tractors?

The 23 is an upgraded (slightly) version of the 22. A couple more peripheral gadgets..... same HP, same weight and performance specs.

The Northern pump does come from Italy. I tracked down the company a couple of years ago and e-mailed them. Northern was at that time their only North American outlet.

It is a well made pump and worth the wait. I haven't seen anything else out there that compares for size, performance and price.

My uncle in Western NY has owned an L2250 since the mid-80's. He primarily uses it for bush-hogging and snow blowing, but also for light farm chores. It's very basic, but it's a great machine. Highly recommended.

If you go to any farm supply store or a 'big tractor' dealer they will have radios for tractors. Someone here has one shown in their photos, I just don't recall who.

Typically they are a weather-proof box which contains a radio, speaker (sometimes two) and a small flexible antenna and are intended to be bolted to the fender next to the operator.

In practice they are not great, by the time you turn up a cheap, tinny-sounding radio loud enough to hear it over the machine, it's not ...... soothing.

Most of my employees used the 'hear-through' type of radio headphones. They kill most of the extraneous noise electronically, they have a microphone built in which nullifies the abient sound while still allowing a voice, whistle or horn to come through, that leaves you with just the radio unless someone shouts at you. They are expensive though. The other, much cheaper, alternative is to just get a 'walkman-type' radio and put up with the other noise.

Reich4300, I will have to keep that in mind about parts being cheaper at Keil. Whenever I get a price on attachments from Adams, they quote me the price from a book. No discount, no discussion. When I bought the tractor there they told me I would get extra special treatment when I came in for parts/service. But I don't get the sense they even remember me when I walk in there.

It wouldn't be seemly to claim to have a problem even if I felt like I did and I don't. I do the same thing. Most every morning I check the weather forecast first thing. Several hours later my wife asks me what the weather's going to do. Half of the time I don't remember details, or which days it's going to happen or give her the forecast from the day before. With this early morning net stuff, I'm not always sure I've quite stopped dreaming. I'm a frequent user of the edit function a few minutes after I've posted.

The web link below goes to the JD site manuals search. A search on 1050 returns various manuals including to for the basic 1050 tractor depending on serial number. From the main page, clicking on 'service an support' and on to publications returns a page that offers on-line and 1-800 number ordering. Manuals can be ordered through dealers as well. I couldn't get the on-line link to work so I don't know if the manuals are in stock.

Nothing wrong with the IT manuals for what they are. They might answer your questions and might not. I prefer factory repair manuals but they are written for trained techs and some procedures call for special tools.

Looks like JD spun off a separate publications company but the manuals are offered through the main site. I have several of their Fundamentals of Service (FOS) manuals and find them pretty good. The are intended to introduce basic maintenance principals to techs and are not shop or repair manuals. Yes, mine settles around that rate as well. If trailering a tractor with a hoe mounted, it's sort of a toss-up whether to use the locking plate or to set the bucket down on the bed to reduce shock loads on the hoe and tractor--probably on the bed is better. A similar issue is locked or unlocked when getting it off a trailer. It's easy enough to damage a hoe by running the bucket into the ground when backing down trailer ramps. Locked probably is better but making sure it's not going to happen is best.

I did something similar once. I left the loader up over the top of a snow blower. In a few days it hooked itself over the top of the blower. No problem since the tractor started. If it hadn't I would have had to jack up the bucket to get the tractor out of the shed. Setting everything down always is good even it you're trying to save space like I was. It's good to keep in mind that kids like to play on tractors. Something that's up can crash down if a lever is pulled. We solved a 3ph problem here once. A kid had turned off the flow control valve.

Well now that is a real good description. I had either forgotten or never knew you did that kind of work. Perfectionists and access to that type of equipment tend to go together so I'm not surprised at the outcome. I imagine you did think through whether the pin temper and the shock loads on them are consistent.

Incidentally and more related to another comment: One of my Shepherds was a chewer as a pup and chewed up an aluminum overhead lawn sprayer when my dad was visiting. As a former A&E mechanic he knew something about metal work and he joked that I should have named the dog Rockwell. The next Shepherd also was a chewer so he was named Rockwell. Most people thought I must have liked old magazine covers or something.
