I feel you will do fine. Just remember that you don't need to spin the tires to fill a bucket with a hydro. Listen to the transmission as to when you spin the tires and you will be able to go onto a lawn and cut out sod or dig any hole you may need or like wise fill and grade easily.

I think mulching mostly has to do with water retention and weed control. Far as I know that's the function, but like most function it gets overtaken by form. A common motivation these days likely has more to do with decoration than function. Serious gardeners around here seem to be growing things in a sea of black plastic, which sure isn't decorative. It probably doesn't change the soil ph either.

True enough about needles and acidity. I use both lime and chem fertilizer to speed up composting. I have to use quite a bit of lime when pine needles are in the pile.

With the way the weather has been for the last week or so, it sure doesn't feel like snow. But they are saying some light snow possible for tomorrow. Hopefully they are wrong. I have had enough. Spring can get hear any time!

If you have sandy soil and trench to fair depths the difficulty is that material tends to fall off the walls. With a narrow bucket you can end up having to clean out trench bottoms so that lines etc. are deep enough or have the right slope to meet code.

I also have to climb into my trenches sometimes to do things like making conduit connections or hand digging through 'earth bridges' to connect trench sections. I find my 12" bucket digs trenches that are barely wide enough to climb into (got to keep in mind here that there are all sorts of safety issues when working in trenches).

The advantages of a narrow bucket are that they dig in hard ground when a hoe may not have power for a larger bucket. They also leave less spoilage if operation doesn't require a wider trench. However, the boom and swing speeds are the same as with bigger buckets so a smaller one takes longer to dig the same hole.

Keith, I've had a #48 hoe on a 4300 for several years then switched it to a 4310. Installing the power beyond kit is a minor detail, the real work involved is the subframe that stays on the tractor when the hoe is off. It takes an experienced JD tech. the better part of the day for the subrame alone. I'm sure you could install it yourself, but it's not a "Piece of Cake" type job. Rear wheels come off, etc., etc., etc,. Keep smileing, Frank.

agentorange, I've got two sets of rear wheel weights on my 4310 with R4 tires. I allways keep the loader bucket low and the rotary mower down. I've had it slide sideways down a slope on wet grass, but I've quit doing that and now mow up and down the slope the sliding thing gets too scary. The seatbelt is there for a good reason, "Your Saftey", please use it. There is no such thing as deciding whether to jump, things just happen too quick. I've had enough close calls with road traffic that we just have a policy of not starting a tractor, roll bar, ROPS cab, either way without the seatbelt being fastened. I've attended the State sponsored saftery classes put on by the Iowa DOT for farm equipment saftey on public roads, if your state offers this class I would highly recommend attending. We live on a main route for work trafic into the city, (about 1500 units per day). It's amazing how few of the drivers respect a tractor pulling two wagons of grain with all saftey flashers working, SMV signs in full display, going 15 MPH. My total GVW is about 60 ton and theirs is between 2000 to 3000 lbs.

Brokenarrow, I can't say anything bad about a King Kutter because I've never saw one, while Woods products I've owned and used in the past and my experience has allways been good. The heavy duty King Kutter might be just a bit too heavy and bulky for your tractor, it's amazing how much more awkward a 6 footer is to turn around in tight spots than a five fotter especially if your tractor gets light on the front end. There is nothing wrong with a shear bolt other than you have to stop and replace a cut one, if you know you'll not be doing much work in uncharted territory the shear bolt will serve you fine. My MX5 has a slip clutch, but they do need to be serviced, because over time the clutch plates will stick together and it won't slip. As for stump jumpers the older machines just had the blade attached to the gearbox shaft like a lawnmower,where now most all have a saucer shaped disc 18 to 24 in in diamater fastened to the shaft with the blades attached to the edge of it to protect your gearbos shaft from stumps, rocks, etc. Lots of surprise objects you never dreamed were there can come rocketing out from under a rotary cutter so also check out the shielding attachments offered for the machine. The MX5 uses a curtain of chains to slow things down a bit as they come out from under the machine. I've saw rubber flaps or chains on different brands, I don't really know which is best, but saftey is important too, so be sure to check that out. Hope this helps, Frank.

You definitly got a drag of a system. Waterfurnace blew it too.

After hearing about everyone who had bad problems, I was hesitent until I saw many good, identical systems running, in my area. (less than 2 mile radius). We may all be getting hosed, but I went to see identical systems to the one I selected before I did so, running in the same area. My other recouse is that being radiant based for the heat, if it's really screwed up, I just put in a boiler and slave to the propane gods.

I guess I've done my "homework", and ultimatly, I'll still be in the hands of my dealer/installer.

My contract ties the last 20% of their payment to the successful performance of their system for a 9 month period. I figure it's at least a little incentive for them to make sure the system runs right and I'm going to run it hard then, cooking the moisture out of my concrete slabs. :)

However, I owe my backround knowledge and healthy does of skepticism to John and Ken. Thanks for sharing your experiences guys, because it helps all of us be better consumers. When I interviewed my HVAC guys, I came loaded for Bear, and one contractor really stood out over the others when I started lobbing the tough questions.

Yes, the KM504/554 has the mechanical shuttle shift.
We are waiting for pricing from KOYKER for their new 185 loader designed to fit the KM454-554 series tractors. Should be available in a couple of weeks. The base tractor lists at $ 10,995. The KM454 is $ 9995.

For cold weather you need to look at the initial numbers which refer to the viscosity at the low temperatures. For more info you can search the TP achives on oil. In general the lower the first number and the higher the second number the better.

The synthetic Rotella T is available at Walmart and it normally has a good price.

When you tie the system together by engaging the 4wd, the rear brakes will slow/stop the front wheels by means of the transmission and drive shaft.

If you have a 4wd truck.. it would be the same as pulling the handbrake with the 4wd engaged... all four wheels will stop.

Yes, smaller tractors are much more maneuverable.

Matt, the four point hook up on the BX23 can't be produced for the price of the package. The initial price may be a little hard to swallow right now but it is the best way to go.

Thanks for the info. I just talked to my JD dealer and he didn't cut and weld. He replaced the top half of the bucket...a costly option. I will see if someone can help me with the situation so I don't have to do this again. I think all should be aware of this costly situation regarding the 4 in 1 bucket. Get a replaceable blade style of 4 in 1 bucket.
