Eric is right, even the major components would be risky.

I know a little about fire damage from a good friend who is in the resoration business, fire & water damage mostly, and I have been to some of his fire jobs, one in particular I recall was a fire in a warehouse, the I-beams had melted into spaghetti from the heat. I don't think the strength of that B/H of FEL would be the same now either.

I've had pretty good luck in the past by just dragging an old section of harrows loaded up on top with concrete blocks or anything else heavy. Multiple passes may be required if the ground is really tough but generally it works pretty well.

Don, I'm not sure if the design is a new one or not, I have an old Ford Bush-hog which is equipped with a non-spring slip clutch. The dealer tells me it was made in the late 50's.

It has a set of steel plates which are compressed together by a large lock-nut, the tighter the nut is turned, the more force needed to make it slip, and vice-versa. One side of the clutch is connected to the input shaft on the BH, the driveshaft connects to the other. It works very well and parts are still available at the dealer.

The x70 series tractors were sold through 1998. I just bought a 1997 970 (ser.# M00970B161049) and had researched the serial numbers. The first 2 digits of the last 6 digits in the serial number tell you the year, 10 = 1991, 11 = 1992, 12 = 1993, ... , 17 = 1998. On my tractor the 2 digits are 16 = 1997. On your tractor (M00870B120624) the digits are 12 = 1993. If the hours are low, you are happy and there were no significant differences between 1993 and 1998 I would chalk it up to another lesson of buyer beware.

Rollers have to be VERY heavy to have much effect on a driveway, vibrating models will give a much better result.

IMHO, you would end up with a much better end result by using a very heavy blade set to a vaery shallow angle and back-dragged across the surface. If you can do it while the material is damp and then stay off it until it dries and firms so much the better.

A little CaCl (calcium chloride) will help to bind everything together and make a harder surface after it dries.

Peters, I get 45-50 MPG, if I can keep my foot out of it (it's difficult to keep my TFI under 65MPH!) The MPG has dropped this winter to around 40, with snow tires all around. Still not too bad, although I am paying premium gas prices for road diesel.

Larry, ClubLink (a good client) doesn't build many courses, they prefer to buy them, it's actually cheaper since they don't pay cash, they give the owner ClubLink shares for putting his course in the group. Larry, if you are in the GTA and play much golf then, yes you probably have played on several courses I've worked on. The majority of our work is away now though, both because of our cost advantage to working in the US or the Islands where the job is bid in US$ and we have a built in 35% price advantage, but also because they are not building many courses here because of the high land costs. LAtely we have had a run of building courses and doing the landscaping for new resort developments.

Eric, I'm not that old either but it's one of those 'industry' things you just pick up along the way. In my case PLAYING golf is a catch 22, I get free play on any course owned by a client, but when I get there the greens staff usually ambush me trying to get an opinion on something. I found a trick to typing less mistakes, I only use two fingers instead of all 8, that way I reduce my mistake-making potential by 75% ... now there's logic huh?

Thanks for all the responses. I would guess that for winter heat, the depth of the exchange pipes in a closed system would be critical. If they're buried four feet down and the frost line is also four feet then you wouldn't get much, if any, exchange. The heat pump would run and run with little efficiency. I'm starting to wonder if even five feet deep is enought to get the ground temp up to the 50 degree range in mid winter. Because they take water from deep down could be why the open systems seem to perform better. I wouldn't consider an open system either.

Tom, Deere tried 7% led on the 55 series as well as laying the tires down on the side so to miss the frame on the tractors and be able to turn a axle at near 55 degree's like the cometition. Here with the stone they had a lot of trouble with sidewall cuts and also wore out tires on the front in about 1000 hours vs the 1500 to 2000 on the competitions tractors that only use 5% for the max lead with many fatoring in less. Don't get me wrong as that was a managable fault on the best of the tractors they have ever built. It does drive up the cost of ownership but that is the just one of the choices everyone makes when they pick their brand.

The HP requirements are somewhat manageable by taking smaller bites, going slower etc. The length is a trade off between how much angling is needed and still cover the tire tracks and the awkwardness of a long blade. A 5' blade won't angle much and still cover 4.5' tracks but it might still be enough.

All three of my Shepherds were subject to ear infections and I applied the anti-biotic drops many times. The allergy idea may be important to follow up.

The female had chronic ear infections, sores and scratched areas in her early years. In dogs, allergies tend to result in skin inflammations that promote ear infections. Tests were done and it turned out she was massively allergic to meat--horse and rabbit were sort of OK but nothing else.

We got her by her first few years with desensitization treatments, an antihistamine (hydroxzine and nobody knows why it helps since dogs don't have histamine receptors) and a diet I had to cook. We tried various things like fish oils.

My now X used to carp severely 'You cook for the dog but won't fry an egg for me,' which wasn't true but maybe should have forecast an Xness, which became Xtiscee. The diet was creme of wheat, eggs, cottage cheese, brewers yeast and some mineral salts. That diet might not be appropriate for all dogs but it did work, and eventually she was able to tolerate commercial lamb/rice food.

Can't find a bed of roses anywhere. Nobody promised me one either except for those who want votes and I don't believe any of them. I have a mid-80's Ford compact. Fine tractor but I dread thinking about the first time some major breaks. Parts costs for the Japanese compacts are outrageous and some are now unavailable through NH.

I suspect you'll have a good experience with your tractor--grey or not. I might be a good idea to track down shop and parts manuals. If you have them you can do a fair bit of the maintenance, and independent mechanics need them for specs and procedures.

Should have read this thread before replying to the original one I guess. Sounds like there is some work in mind for the tractor. There are some things needed and some things to learn about using CUT's for hauling logs, trailers, boats etc. A blade should work better than a loader for snow removal but each of them have problems and things to learn for snow removal from gravel roads.

Most people who have 3ph dirt scoops don't have loaders since they do much the same work and loaders do it better. If a rotary cutter is to be used for lawn mowing, most of them don't do it too well, especially if the ground isn't very level. I have two small vegetable plots and I use a small walk-behind tiller since it's faster than something on the tractor. For that matter I finish mow with a riding mover about 1-acre in each of two places. There are lots of landscaping and out-buildings. The riding mower takes less time maneuvering, leaves less trimming and does less lawn damage than my tractor.

I did use the tractor to remove sod from the plots first and occasionally use boxscraper scarifiers to break up soil deeper than the small tiller and to initially work compost in. If the soil is too gravely for a tiller then it probably needs some improvement for vegetable plots. Some rock-picking might be in order and maybe top-soil and compost but these are mostly one-time uses and won't keep a tractor very busy. The tractor is essential in making and using compost--at least the way I do it.

Tractors are pretty expensive to buy and maintain and it's good to keep them busy or at least recognize them as an expensive hobby. Using a tractor for jobs that small engine stuff can do better may keep you and the tractor busy but at an expense. You haven't mentioned any need for road maintenance or material handling. Such things plus snow removal keep my tractor busy enough despite my flock of small engine stuff.

Buying new wheels may not be necessary. A fairly standard way to widen stances on many tractors is to reverse the wheels. I don't suppose all wheels can be reversed and reversing them doesn't make any difference if the rim is mounted symmetrically on the hub.

Reversing them usually means swapping left and right wheels, which puts the valve stem on the inside. Just turning the wheels around also widens the stance but also reverses the tread. R1's are directional and provide more traction going forward than in reverse. Many areas are served by mobile tire shops that pump out loaded tires, do any work required and re-load them. Such services may be well worth the cost.

Do you still have the sub-frame off a Kubota that you mentioned in your post on 03-24-2003? I have a Kubota L3000DT that Kubota & Woods say that they don't make a sub-frame to fit this model. Thankd, Gary H.

have heard that once you get the wire feed concept, you never go back. I'm thinking that as much control as possible with feed and heat settings is probably the key. The aluminum tip is a good one due to it's very nature. I'm researching the Clarke models right now.

That 7510 price is too high. I converted it to $15,245. A B7510, HSD, LA302 FEL should be under $14k USD. How much under could be due to many things of course. It is starting to get close to beginning of 'season' for this product.

I speak of B7510 and related prices due to the fact that I just bought one 2 weeks ago. Go to Tractorsmart and find the link where a list of info from Minnesota is very helpful. At least it relates the proper attachments and gear to the proper machine with part numbers. It's a very good batch on info all-around and good people. There's another one too. Grab my email from my info and I'll send you the pages I have if you can't get to them.
