There is always a compromise with tires. R4's usually are wider and tear up the ground less, and if you have 'gravelly soil' would likely be a good choice. If you have wet areas, or clay or silty ground to work, a tire that doesn't slip will do the least damage. <br>
Will you be using your tractor in the winter? Plan to move snow, haul firewood, whatever? If you post your proposed uses, I'm confident you'll get a lot of feedback from members doing the tasks you might have in mind.<br>

I have an older Lincoln that I have used for years. It is probably a 120. It has had no problems at all. It welds well. I do mostly steel and stainless. Most of the welding has been solid wire with shielding gas, but I have also used flux core with it. The small lincoln wire welder actually does a better job with 0.023 steel wire when welding very thin stuff than my big wire welder.

I have welded aluminum with it. Technically it has enough power, but you really need a good spool gun if you are going to do much aluminum. The aluminum wire is difficult to "push" through the cable from the main unit. So, aluminum has a tendency to buckle and fail to feed. You can minimize this by keeping the cable fully extended and straight away from the welder. The friction goes up if you bend the cable. A spool gun "pulls" the wire through the cable and/or has a small spool and motor drive in the torch.

Now I know that someone is going to say, "you don't need a spool gun" which costs almost as much as the welder that you are buying. The point is that you CAN do aluminum with the conventional setup, but you will wish for more if you do very much of it. Your satisfaction will depend upon how much aluminum you need to do. Flexibility will be limited.

These rigs work fine for steel. CO2 gas works for most steel. You need Argon if you are going to weld SS and aluminum.

Sorry about the diversion.

IMHO, the list of "must have" implements is ENTIRELY dictated by what the tractor "must do".

If you want to cut grass a mower is handy, but if you want to move dirt it won't be much help.

What sort of things do you want to do with it, and what are the conditions like?

I'm at 1100 feet in Oregon so I suspect it is a little colder here than at Peter's house in Alabama. He is right about the installation being critical, but how can you be sure they will do a good job? WaterFurnance sure hasn't backed me up with our problems. I checked references, BBB reports, etc before signing and all feedback was good. Anyway, as far as I know none of our problems are due to installation. Duct pressure tests and blower door tests prove the ductwork and the house to be very tight. The failures on the unit have been electrical and factory defects (TXV Valve). Everybody I've had out has concluded the unit may be marginally undersized for the house, but it was sized by WaterFurnace who had access to our blueprints and they sure aren't interested in standing behind their work.

I didn't experience any stability problems on hills with the 15-19.5 R4s that were originally installed. After the rollover I decided to trade for R1s. The taller R1s raised the center of gravity a couple of inches, and since the new rims could be adjusted wider I had them set as wide as possible. You can't be too stable on those hills!

Don, you could test each positon with the engine off. Put a mark on the pto and the engine crankshaft pulley. The trick is to get your engine to turn exactly one rotation and stop (or close to one rotation). If rated power is at 2000 engine RPM then the PTO setting that turns the shaft about 1/4 turn is the correct one. You can test all the settings this way and have a scale factor that will tell you how fast the PTO is turning for any selector/engine RPM combination. Common sense safety rules apply.

As I listen to responses to this thread it is my inclination to not rush into an adjustment on the rockshaft. It is easy to force the bucket down to push the BH into position so the LPins can be inserted. As long as no one sees a problem with this procedure I am happy for the shortrun.

Harvey's simple solution does sound like its worth taking a look at. TomG - thanks for your discussion about the danger of hitting the mechanical stop and going into relief.

I live in Washington, PA. What dealer are you using? Are you still considering NOT getting the hydro on the larger unit, especially since you list finish mowing as one of your uses? I would go nuts w/o the hydro on my TC45D...a buddy of mine wishes he had the hydro on his TC45, and he doesn't even finish mow with it...

jeff r, $40 is about what I would like to pay for a set of used forks. They go for $150 here but I think these are rated for 3K-4K lbs. Just another item on the list for me.

I was refering to resale value in my comment. I do not know
all the specs on comparble tractors,as to one lifting more than the other.
I was talking more in general terms,such as a L2800DT for $14,900. here in maine where we are higher than most I see on this board. It is a 29 hp vs a 30 hp? perhaps lifting caps. vary, but enough to effect the avg. owner?
I know an off brand tractor would be hard to resell here,
mabey it's not a big deal where you are. My only
point in mentioning it is I don't think people think of
resale,they buy on price. I'm sure it's a fine tractor but,
can you sell if you "had" to, without taking a bath?
