I use a Worksaver 714H that I mounted on a forklift carriage for attaching to my 460 JD FEL. I had this hydraulic unit mounted on the extreme end of the dipper stick on a CC 7.5 backhoe once, ran it from a pto driven pump while the hoe ran from the power beyond circuit. The hoe allowed for quick & precise placement of the auger, however, in order to keep the auger plumb it is necessary to reduce or alter the radius as the auger digs in to the ground. This meant having to back the tractor or try to make adjustments using the boom down force while crowding the dipper. The weight of the unit, plus the fact that the boom down force was a bit too fast acting, made me abandon the hoe location. The FEL position works much better, and to alter the radius, I just drive ahead slightly and everything stays plumb. The single lever control valve offers much better control of the unit, over that of the backhoe, and the FEL handles the weight far better. Visibility to the front on most CUT's is limited, including my 4610, however, I have two mounting positions: right and left side of the carriage frame. In either position it is easy to keep an eye on the auger. Cost of the unit was high, $1100.00 plus tax, through J.S. Woodhouse. I prefer the hydraulic unit over the pto driven 3pt hitch variety for these simple reasons: it mounts quickly, is reversible, is fast to position, and absorbs shocks better than the pto types. For a landscaper, it is a bread-and-butter must have attachment.

Bill, Yes it is a great pic. The flak you take is not nearly as bad as a few years back in north dakota. There was a big tractor show, all the new (big name tractors showing off for the media. Some poor Deere employee was way back in a field with a case tractor, you guessed it, the deere got burried and before the crew from deere could get out there the NICE case employee offered to pull em out.
Unsuspecting what was to come he agreed because not wanting to be seen. Well the not so nice case employee called back to the group and wouldnt you know it a camera showed up!!! We still have the pics posted for giggles. I wonder what happened to that green employee! Hmmm.

Matt, I have a GC2300 which I use mostly for mowing (3-4 acres) and snowblowing (350' driveway and parking area). It does both tasks very well. I'm a bit frustrated with it (myself!) for not paying a little more attention to 3PH tasks--clearing snow & ice, grading with backblade for example. In a nutshell, the 3PH is somewhat limited due to no real position control (and I'm limited by unpaved, uneven surfaces). Implements are light in this size class and tend to float over compacted surfaces. Depending on how much of that type of work you're doing, you might want to give this consideration some thought. There is no backhoe attachment for the 2300. Massy's come out with the 2310 which is a TLB combo, very similar to BX22/23. I do intend to do some tilling with it, and I expect it to do well since we have a well-treated garden plot to begin with. It is a great little tractor, given these limitations. Only you know how you will aportion the tractor's time--what jobs you want to do and what priority each task has. And of course, your budget comes into play.

The 30+ PTO-HP may allow you to use a larger bushog, rear blade,etc. Overall, the 3830 is a little bigger, a tad more ground clearance, larger tires, not quite as nimble. If you're going to do a lot of plowing you might want draft control, depending on your soil. I'd lean towards the 3830, but the 3130 is a fine tractor too(I have one).
I really like the HST, too many reasons to list, but there are gearheads who like to shift and love their GST's
So, ignoring cost, I'd choose the 3830HST.
Ask your dealer for a test drive on whatever models you are interested in, with 65A you'll be sitting in the seat a good many hours...

Actually, my dealer said they were a hemorrhoid to put on (but agreed they were well worth the cost and trouble) -- but I can't see why... They look like they just bolt on to me, too... Maybe there is a bunch of stuff in the way. I'll be anxious to hear your report.

As some of you may know I (OK, the company) get to cut our fair share of turf.

When a course is being worked on, our built out, the care of the turf is the responsibility of the contractor. This is so that it is clear who is responsible for it, sort of a 'this is how you got it, and we want it back the same way' thing.

There was one little point made in that article which is the whole key to mulching grass clippings, it's a shame it wasn't emphasized more.

Clipping length. That's the whole thing right there.

If you cut grass often the amount cut off is negligible to the plant, and will not last long before disappearing into the soil.

The best time to cut is first thing in the morning. This is important for two reasons.

First it gets the dew off the grass and down to the earth where it can be used instead of just evapourating. In fact later in the season, or during a drought, it is common to 'drag' the grass at dawn. Basically a long bar is dragged cross-wise across the surface of the grass in order to get the dew to trickle down to the ground to be absorbed. This can make a HUGE difference in survival.

Secondly, when the grass clippings are created early in the morning they have all day to wilt and start breaking down in the hot sun. This speeds the process considerably.

If you're going to mulch it is critical that the clippings be kept as short as possible. It's also important not to clog the lawn with clippings, so if you're not prepared to cut often, don't try it. For most of the year I have to cut my place twice a week, in the spring/early summer time when it's really growing fast it gets cut every other day.

I'm a new member and have finally talked my better half into the fact that we need a tractor! After looking at the $$ for some US "made" tractors, I think I want a Yanmar. I am thinking I want a 20-30 HP, 4wd with a loader. Any models or dealers to stay away from?

The reason Honda EU "i" series is of interest is because we have a software company and one of our products is PowerClaim property estimating software and since we are not that far from Reelfoot Lake I know we could see a big earthquake some day or other weather related concern. In the event of an earthquake, etc our need to be up and running 24/7 becomes even more critical because we would have so many users out in field at the same time. When we build our own location in about 3 years we will go with a complete back-up generation system. A couple of these light units can be kept off-site as we keep the second phone system off-site but every 30 days we exchange the two phone systems.

We also have the small battery backup power sources but they are only good for minutes.

I've checked out the "other board" but it seems like there is just way too much going on there. It takes forever to read a simple thread and there are too many people on there that think they know a lot and want to use all these technical terms that just fill up space. Even though this site has a nominal fee, I still rate it better because the answers are more direct.

Hi, Tim. I trust you got the name of the person you spoke with in the event that you do have more problems. This is just me, but I like to formalize converstaions in writing, e.g "Dear Marsha Phoneperson, Thank you for your convesation on Feruary 13 concerning the documented, ongoing problems with my tractor. As we discussed , the machine has been in the shop on the following dates for the following problems <itemize dates adn problems>...I was disappointed that you were unable to do any more than offer to sell me an extended warranty.....I will retain a copy of this letter to support my continued request for a remedy to this unresolved situation...."

You don't have to take take my word for it, but if the worst case scenario comes about, all parties involved are going to ask for documentation. If you choose to write a letter now, you will prepare yourself for any unfortunate repeats of equipment failures. If you don't, it will be like starting all over again if any of the problems reccur. I repeat--after I documented my problems in a letter, things began to happen in favor of a resolution. IMO, you've got to put them on notice in writing. The sooner the better.

Ultimately, only JD's regional managers can offer to extend a warranty on a piece of equipment. Your dealer can request that extension for you and the RM would approve or deny the problem. When my machine was "repaired" and I insisted on a replacement, I was offered an extended warraty only on the affected area (rockshaft and housing) if I were to take back the repaired machine.

The CCC facilitates problem resolution and they don't really have any decision making authority, but they do make things happen--I testify. Perhaps they have a rule that, unless there is an existing problem, they cannot open a case file (if they not open one in your case). From what I recall reading, everything is currently operating on your machine. I wouldn't excuse them for their lack of formalizing you complaint.

BTW, as was mentioned above, the extended warranties are pretty much power train warranties. Your original warranty is the equivalent of a "bumper-to-bumper" warranty.

Peters, I agree with you entirely. I think that we both have experience with the proper use of plastics and I am not the least bit bothered that the hood and fenders on my CUT are made from organic material. <br>

I have restored more old tractors than most people that I know and I have seen severe metal damage from poorly painted and prepared metal parts; painted parts that were damaged by bird crap, animal urine, wet plant debris, and other corrosive agents. I own a number of racing cars and motorcycles that all use plastic parts. I have more trouble with the painted metal on the older vehicles. <br>

Seat belts, bullet proof vests, bullet proof glass, motorcycle helmets, safety harnesses, mountain climbing ropes, and a host of other life critical applications are all made with the proper use of plastics. Cold weather can be properly addressed since all ski boots and skis are made with plastic. <br>

A point has been made that plastics can be poorly done, but I have no evidence to think that any of the plastic parts used by the big three CUT manufacturers have any defect in material, application or workmanship at all.<br>

Yoop..I am not denying that you have a very good tractor that is 53 years old. It is a well built piece of equipment and if it is cared for it could last another 53 years. But, when I was restoring older tractors, there were many tractors of that age that were stripped for parts for every one that still worked like new. <br>

I hope that my CUT will last for 53 years, but only time will tell, and I likely won't be around to tell you if it made it. I do know that some of the current paints that meet environmental regulations will not last 53 years and that many vehicles will suffer from paint damage and will start rusting within ten years.

I bought a used 3 point for a 455, call around to your local dealers as they have tractor attachments piled in boxes in the shed. They strip trade in's down because used buyers may not want the extras. I paid $300 last year. Internet searches don't work on something like this. Be sure you get all the parts - compare against a parts printout before you leave.

I am not familiar with this tractor, but I have worked on a number of hydraulic clutches. Hydraulic clutches are good from the standpoint of adjustments. Generally the reservoir "being drained out" is not a good sign. The fluid went somewhere. It can indicate several things.

You must check to see if the master or slave cylinders are leaking. If they are, you must correct that problem first.
If you just added fluid, then you probably need to also bleed the hydraulic lines to the slave cylinder. This is done exactly like you bleed brakes. If this does not make sense, then you need to go to the mechanic.

Hydraulic clutches only have a limited range of disengagement travel. The rest of the slave cylinder travel is used to make it "self adjusting." Air in the system compresses and reduces the solid travel of the slave cylinder. Air in the system can also cause the throwout bearing to be under constant light pressure and eventually wear it out.

If there are no visible leaks then it can indicate a condition where the clutch and/or clutch engagement mechanism could be completely worn out. Sometimes on the hydraulic slave cylinder there is a mechanical adjustment that can restore the active portion of the clutch travel to the right point to disengage the clutch.

Your goal is to get the clutch slave cylinder to operate solidly without air in the system and to just disengage the throwout bearing from the clutch diaphragm when the pedal is released. When the pedal is pressed, the slave cylinder will engage the throwout bearing against the clutch diaphragm and pull the clutch plate from the transmission side away from the flywheel to release pressure on the clutch disk. If this does not happen, then the clutch disk material is worn to the point that it takes more than the regular amount of travel to disengage.

I would not jump to the conclusion that the clutch disk is rusted to the clutch plates especially if you have had to fill the hydraulic clutch reservoir. If you can get enough access to squirt solvent into the clutch area, you might be able to see the clutch disk material. You can measure if the disk is worn out by the distance between the flywheel and clutch plate in the engaged position.

You're right . this is a really good group ! I spent a lot of time lurking . Then I had a conversation with Dk35 Vince about the 19 odd dollar premium fee . He asked what I spend on Mag subscriptions . Brought me back to reality REAL QUICK :) If I had to pay someone to dish the rims and fit the chains it would have cost a lot more than premium member Fee !!! I figure I can get 4-5 years more out of the money I saved on this thread alone . Hey ! A couple more threds like this and I'll save enough for that box blade I want :)
Back to chains .. I bought the dual rings as a compromise .
While we do get a lot of snow , it generally melts between major storms .It then turns every thing to mud . In my very limited knowledge of chains I figured the rings would handle the snow and slop better . This year has been a bit different . It just sits around turning to ice on the drive . If this were a prevalant condition I would have gone with V-bar chains . I rarely need to travel on the road, So either would have worked . John

Box scrapers are strange animals.

When they are riding around doing nothing, they are great for ballast and provide a big increase in rear traction.

When we drop them to the ground our traction increase instantly disappears. Worse.... then we fill them with dirt and they become the landlocked version of a sea anchor.

I have done the liquid thing and I have done weights. My impression with filled tires is that they aid more in stability than increased traction. Wheel weights are the way to go here. When your box blade bails out on you there is 300-400 extra pounds pushing directly on the rear tread.

I think my bro F350 is right on track too. Instead of looking for a scoop of dirt (not always one handy), I keep a bar stacked with used weight plates in the garage.

It weighs 300# and just rolls into the FEL bucket whenever I am doing jobs like box blading or chain-harrowing that tend to "unload" the rear end.
