Thanks much for all the support and suggestions. I really do appreciate it!

Well, according to the guy I talked with on the phone, after I got home on Monday, the 'positive' lead from the battery, was rubbing against 'something' (I wasn't told what), and this is what caused it to short out.
And, when I was listing off all the problems to the dealer, that I have had so far, he said that more than likely when the person replaced the radiator hose, when it was cut and leaked out radiator fluid (the day before it was to be delivered to me), they probably routed the cables/wires in the wrong spot. I can definitely believe this since I find it very difficult to close the front panel, since the cables/wires that are attached to the radiator 'tube' (not sure of the proper term) stick out so far that I can't get the side of the front panel to fit in where it's supposed to be.
So, when they come back on Thursday, to replace the cable, I asked they they also re-route the cables where they should be.
When I asked the dealer if John Deere would kick in an extended warranty at no charge, because of all the problems I've had, he said that he doubted they would and left it at that. Guess I didn't sound pissed enough......
But, I would still like to talk with someone from John Deere to see if I can at least have some sort of compensation for all the crap I've gone through with this tractor.

Thanks again everyone. Hopefully this will be the last problem for quite some time. I'm dreading breaking the 100 hour mark (just kidding...)

I'll post any other information that I find out, too.

I have always had a 6 in 1, which is a grapple bucket with integral fold-away forks, on one of my machines for years and would be lost without it.

HOWEVER, as my friend from Abbeywoods stated, they are a real comprimise on a light machine like a CUT. The added weight of the 4 in 1 also reduces the usefull lifting capacity of the FEL.

Mine is on a full-size TLB (see my pic. # 3) and is a far cry from what you are looking at. It is made of 1/2" high-tensile steel and is designed to mate to that machine. The fact that it is mounted on a 20,000 pound machine makes a HUGE difference too. It will easily rip a 12" pine stump out without hardly breaking a sweat, and a 16' long 18" diameter freshly cut maple log is an easy snatch & grab.

As mentioned the lighter units are very easily twisted by just the machines own hydraulics.

IMHO, you would get more use and satisfaction from a set of pallet forks instead.

Beagle, try slipping one of those fancy little tailpipe tips over the exhaust pipe end and point it straight down. Be sure NOT to screw it in place since you will need to remove it in order to open that side panel. Also watch out when you do remove it, it will be very hot if the machine has been running hard for a while.<br>

We did this on several of our machines and it caused the fumes to be low enough that they didn't end up in your face, it will however kick up a little more dust from the jet blast.<br>

What really toasts me is when there's a factual error in the specs, and you take the trouble to tell them about it, and they STILL don't fix it. That is inexcusable. It's what, a two minute job to edit something?

Abbeywoods, without digging up the invoice I think I paid around $2500 for my grapple. But it's only a 5 footer (not 6 like yours) was purchased as a package deal with the tractor. It may have cost a bit more if bought directly from Borgford - or not. Not sure about that.

Dee you are right about the logistics support and availability of dealer with John Deere. Aside from price, that is one of the big reasons I went with a Deere.

Unless you can find a buyer in the classified here or over on CTOA or hopefully someone locally; you may have a hard time getting anywhere close to your purchase price for the 354. Jinma's don't hold resale value very well yet as they are not a widely known or established brand yet. Not bad mouthing them, just a fact of life.

In the event that you cannot get a feasible or acceptable price for your Jinma; you will have to make a decision as to whether you want sell it for what you can get or mabye just hold on to it and use it as a second tractor for backup or other uses around the farm. Do you have or have you thought about a pto backup generator for the farm? The Jinma would be ideal for that. Running up a bunch of hours on it running the generator will not have the same impact on future value as on the 4600 and that will free up the 4600 for other uses. The other option would be to trade it for something that is of good use and value to you such as a trailer for hauling your tractor around or other item.

I am just throwing a few idea out there to consider. Hope you can work something out that will work for you.

On another maintenance note; have you inspected or gone over the 4600 yet. You may want to check some things like the battery and its compartment as well as the transmission oil cooler that the battery sets up against. They are well known for causing serious corrosion problems. How many hours are on the 4600? Any services coming due or past due? Got the owner's manual? These are probably things for a new thread over in the John Deere section if you have any questions.

He ended up with wet feet.

Since then he's lowered his sights a bit. Now he's ordering mean, little kids to "be nice."

Or else.

Yup, by policy, given proper first and second readings, with revisions, majority votes and the appropriate enshrinement in thick, administrative manuals, school officialdom is putting an end to the common schoolyard bully.

Or so they think.

As a kid who went through childhood as prime bully-bait I hate to tell 'em, it ain't gonna work.
As the adult, that kid became, I can tell �em, I sure hope it doesn't work.

Oh, I suppose they have good intentions and all n these folks usually do. They want to protect kids from pretty much anybody or anything that "is intended to cause or is perceived as causing distress to one or more students�" and they spend five single-spaced, footnoted pages of convoluted legalese spelling out how to do it.

To condense and translate, mandated juvenile social harmony will be attained through compulsory tattling followed by a multi-stage investigation the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Warren Commission; followed by the tattler being placed in a witness protection program, presumably to be relocated to a remote Iowa county until the whole thing blows over.

I'll say it again, it ain't gonna work � I'm glad it ain't gonna work.

Our kids need bullies.

Let me explain.

I was a sawed-off, runty kid with thick glasses and a big mouth, the kind of kid that attracted bullies like a tax cut attracts Republicans. Being my parent's oldest, I didn't have a big brother to bully me at home; I had to wait until my first day of school to meet my first bully.

I'll call him LeRoy, because that's his name. He pointed out I was puny, dressed funny and had the wrong kind of lunch box. Then he pushed me into the mud.

I didn't like that. That night I told Mom all about it. She told me I'd have to fight my own battles.

On the second day of school, LeRoy pushed me into the mud again.

I got up and hit him in the face. After his nose stopped bleeding, we both got sent to the principal. By the time the two of us finished sitting out a week's worth of recesses as punishment for fighting, we got along pretty well.

I learned to stand up for myself. LeRoy learned that even a muddy, runty kid can pack a mean right jab. That's a lot of education to pack into the second day of school.

In time I learned that bullies weren't going to just go away. There was a kid bigger and meaner than LeRoy just waiting to take his place, and I'd have to figure out how to deal with him � and the kid after him and after him� Teachers and principals lined up with my folks to help n "Don't tattle to me," they said, "You have to learn to fight your own battles."

And I did. We all did. With no help from caring adults we discovered that when three or four or ten of us cornered a playground thug behind the town band shell and left him to make his way home scuffed, bleeding and without his pants � with further fair warning that next time his underwear also would be forfeit � it had a wonderfully civilizing influence on his future behavior. Call it vigilante justice, participatory democracy, ad hoc conflict resolution or the application of positive peer pressure � we learned to fight our own battles. Some we won. Others we lost. What we learned served us well. Except for the ones in prison, we all survived to become reasonably decent, reasonably productive adults. Even the kid everybody called "Wedgie" went on to invent thong underwear�

King Canute's policy writers threaten to take that all away � turn what should become tough, independent kids into so many simpering, whining tattletales.

They can mandate that the schoolyard become a bully-free zone all they like, but it ain't gonna happen.

Being a bully is too much fun � especially when nobody's learning to fight back.

Just wondering if anyone ever got an explanation why there are not more grease fittings on the BX. It is puzzling why you would not be able to lubricate additional wear points on the tractor, such as the front axle. Are these points sealed or what?

This is again why the foot throttle comes in so handy. Reducing RPM on the shift saves the drive train. Reducing RPM when you're operating the loader under no-load conditions saves hydraulic ram seals.

Sounds like a factory PB kit but it'd be good if the description is recognized by somebody who knows the tractor. If it is the the connecting hose may be needed to complete the return path when a valve isn't connected. A test might sort things out.

If the hose is removed and the tractor started the engine would labour under full throttle and the relief valve would open. The pressure side would be at full system pressure and a hose under pressure often can be felt to stiffen. A tractor shouldn't be run for long in this condition. Identification of the pressure and return ports from a manual would be very good. Ports on valves usually are stamped with 'P' or 'IN' for the pressure side.

I think splitter valves are a bit specialized but a common valve that would work for a top link should do too badly. It may require a more operator attention though. A valve with a regenerative feature (used on fast dump loader circuits) might speed up splitter work a bit.

I'll be following progress. Highway surveyors have been working away along our frontage. They may want to grab 7.5' of our property to solve their road bed drainage problems. If it comes to that it'll probably compromise our existing row of mature white and red pine so we'll be looking for a replacement privacy barrier and substantial compensation.

I guess the fence is along a property line and will stay. I'd think in terms of how much slope a birm could tolerate without erosion problems. To get much height a birm might have to be pretty wind and that would set the tree line further from the fence. A retaining wall on the fence side would solve any erosion problems but that sounds like a lot of work.

Thanks, so far we have looked at the NH 40HP with hydro static, The JD 4510, and the Kubota L4630. All with loaders, detach buckets, pallet forks, snow pushers. I like the Jodale Perry cab instead of the Curtis.

I guess it was gear oil that leaked out very fast. I've rebuilt synchromesh TX's but I haven't been into one of these. However, I don't think there's much to them and a job should be pretty easy. How things come apart is usually pretty obvious but gearboxes often have snap or retaining rings that have to be removed. You've got to watch for these things before banging away on something. Tools like retaining ring pliers are handy. I think there's 'how to' discussion in the archives.

It's probably a matter of installing new seals and some types of seals can be replaced without a complete disassembly. However, since it was completely dry and may have been run dry last summer, it'd be a good idea to inspect to gears and bearings as well. If you disassemble it there may be issues like clearances to shim to spec or bearing pre-loads to set but I doubt it. Because there are these sorts of issues, I'd check with Woods to see if a repair manual with a parts list and diagram is available and if they still supply parts. If Woods doesn't supply parts, don't throw anything away and try to remove seals without destroying them. Many parts are stamped with OEM codes and may available from sources other than the implement manufacturer.

Similar to a 1700 likely is a better description. I'm not up on which models cross with which Fords but in general the engines are very similar but still with some differences. I think rest of the tractors are less similar.

I have an Allied 195 on my 1710. Allied tech support was very good in the past and maybe it still is now that they're part of Buhler. You might send them a note through their site below and ask if they can supply a frame for your tractor. If you can't come up with one a local fabrication shop should be able to modify a frame that's close.
