My opinion is that R4s, like most compromises, don't excel at anything. Well, maybe they're OK if you do all your work on pavement or hard, dry ground. I'd recommend either R1s or, if you mow, turfs with chains. R1s do pretty well in snow around here without chains and they do very well in muddy conditions without plugging, unlike R4s.

Tom, based on what the weather dept. is telling us you had better plug in that Ford and wax your roof rake, as of this morning they are saying "Significant amounts of snow are possible with this storm especially over northern and central sections of the Province and into the Ottawa Valley. Freezing rain may last a few hours over many areas before changing to rain.".

DPWeston, this is something the dealer should do for you, I would expect included with the purchase price or at least a very discounted cost to have this done. Ask the dealer and see what they say if you haven't already.

My opinion would be to go with the 84" blade. You can always take less of a bite and the 84" blade is a real convenient width to make a single pass on the drive way. I use an 84" land scaping rake to maintain my drive way and have very good results. I would think similar principles would apply to the snow removal as well. Another point is that if the 84" blade is too much; you can angle it off to take less of a bite too.

Beagle, I don't think you will have any luck 'locking' a hydraulic motor.

Certainly if you apply a load to it the motor shaft will spin, slowly maybe, but spin it will. The hydraulic fluid will cavitate in the pump allowing motion in the absence of a driving force. If you were to run a steep enough gear reduction then the gears combined with the motor may prevent very much motion.

In the case of skidding winches, for example, you use the hydro. power to pull the log in to the machine then chain it in place to keep it from playing out cable as you drive away.

itsgottabegreen, why do you say rear engine gravely is junk? No offense taken - just curious. My only problem with the gravely is that I never have an excuse to buy another machine.

Not to be the spoiler in this otherwise good idea....BUT.

Green, the back-side (retract) side of any cylinder is a LOT less powerful than the extend stroke is. I would be surprised if it will tweak it back any at all.

The force of hitting something should not be under-estimated. That is why snowplows have trip-edges of some form. The momentum of even a small machine hitting something increases the force exponetially.

If you really want it straight I would think you would be better off cutting it open, straightening it and re-welding it. Expensive, but the only gauranteed fix.

Dealers can make a big difference. I chose NH over JD only because of the dealer in my area. Perhaps the JD dealer is doing so well that he doesn't think that he needs to care about the customer. I am extremely happy with my NH tractor and have no regrets at all. Service from NH has also been quick and good.

The dealers who have sold the Jinmas and Kamas seem to think the Kama is a better tractor. I would like to find out more on the Benyes and Fotons also. The Benye and the Jinma seem to be the only one that makes the 224s. A perfect size for what i'm looking for. One place says the Benye has a cat. 0 3 point and another place says it is a cat. 1 so i would like to know what it really is .

I remember reading the question and then neglecting it. I didn't know if the tractor is HST or gear. From the description I figure it's an HST. I'm not sure I can think through a connection between the steering wheel and the TX except that both likely are hydraulic. Sounds like I might learn something here.

Try a good engine machine shop, cranks can be reground and oversized bearings can than be used to save the crank, that is if you didn't spin a main bearing.

I own a NH, but my suggestion is to select the dealer that you want to work with. You are going to have the tractor for a long time, and both are good machines. <br>

Did you check the drive pulley at the bottom of the tractor where it drives the deck? This pulley could be bent and your belts could be running on a angle. Also what brand of belts are you using? Are they a match pair or two different brands? What 60" deck do you have side or rear discharge?

Dennis,thought I'd tell you something about your chinese tractor sections. You got to many,a nortrac is a jinma,they are ordered a little different maybe then a farmpro,who knows,but a farm pro is also a jinma,which maybe is ordered a little different then a nortrac,etc,there are differences after that,who puts them together,warrentys,etc,but same tractor.<br>

You do need an other chinese tractor section, in addition to jimas,cause there are other manufactors of chinese tractors,maybe ole chip can help out with this,he knows more about it than me,in other words, your sections need refining,There are a couple more well known manufactors,help me out somebody.
