Thanks for all the input. I guess I should just use my tractor and stop wondering about why they made it the way they did - the engineers must know a lot more than me. One thing I will attest to is fuel economy. I go 10 hours on 5 gallons, heavy loader work, dragging my horse ring. whatever. Uses a lot less fuel and does a hell of a lot more work than I figured it would when I bought it( gee, guess I answered my own question didn't I)

I have a 4100 and serious scuffing marks on my lawn, so I don't think the problem is limited to the 4200 - 4400 tractors. I don't know what the final answer will be but I am mowing slower in the turns and not turning nearly as sharp as I did. I have owned the tractor for less than two months and it has completely removed the grass in several areas where I have made sharp turns. My greatest concern with the 4100 is catching an overhanging limb with the ROPS and tipping over. After using a 318 for 5 years it may take me a while to adjust to the size of the 4100.

I appreciated your comments and agree with you about 98%. The other 2% I hold out for a handshake, a smile, and a sense of appreciation for me as a customer... I don't think American made vehilces would be the quality they are today without the solid competition from the Japanese auto industry. Competition is a good thing for us, the consumer. It should also be a good thing for the manufacturers and and distributors if it forces them to be the best they can be in satisfying the consumer and thus, insuring satisfied return customers. Has anyone heard as to when the new Iseki compacts will be available? A local Massey dealer said he looked at some at a trade show and says they are pretty sharp and offer alot of standard options. I am curious as to what they look like and how they compare to the Massey compacts.

I agree with your argument that the turn brake manuever on the JD is better than other compacts. I echo Doug's comment about there could be a better design on the Kubota. I just thought of your emergency braking scenario to be a bit silly, that's all.

As an alternative to expensive rear wheel weights, one person at the Hacker Page (a tractor Web site) created much less expensive rear weights for his Kubota by having a round steel plate cut for both back wheels (with mounting bolt holes that line up) and then welded a one inch diameter threaded rod to the center of the round steel plate on which he placed weight-lifting weights which he purchased new for 38 cents/lb. He painted the steel and retaining washer and nut Kubota orange and left the plastic-covered weights black. Just a thought...<br>Mike

I've got a Kubota B2400 hydo with a 5' Befco, 3-pt hitch, rear discharge finishing mower. It works great and I've no complaints at all except that I can only cut my 2-1/2 acre yard once a week. The problem is that as fast as the grass grows, it really needs cutting every 4/5 days. So when I get round to it, the grass is a little longer that I would like and the mower leaves windrows of grass lying on the ground that look ugly and don't do the lawn much good either. Dispersion of the grass clippings is a lot better if I slow down to a crawl but it's too hot in Texas at this time of year to take any longer than necessary to get the job done. What I'd like your opinion on is this : Is it better to get a mulching kit for the Befco mower and hope that helps get better dispersion of the cuttings (or will that only slow the jobs down even further) or is there somone who makes a grass catcher or rake that can be added to the rear discharge mower to pick up the cuttings. I've got a lawn sweep that was used on an old John Deere lawn tractor that will sweep the stuff up but the holding capacity is so small that it gets to be a real chore to use.<br>I'd be grateful for any help or advice that you guys can give me.
